It almost feels theatral, the way the melody exchanges and the "solo" moments.. they make a beautiful atmosphere.

A stunning performance of one of my all-time favourite pieces. The viola is a woefully underused instrument.

nah its more complicated than that: it's not as bright (notice how it gets quickly drowned by the flute, even in such a small ensemble, at moments) and also its typically doing the job of being a middle voice in string arrangements: this means that its the one that you'll pay the least attention to. Furthermore, I'm told it's a bit too big to play with the nimbleness you play a violin: these things have all conspired to make it less prominent. Its got a lovely warm sound, though, and its a damned shame darker, mellower instruments aren't as prominent in current orchestras: just check the viola da gamba for another forgotten beauty

Even before the Music started I had the feeling of contemplating a beautiful image by the Italian painter Giorgio de Chirico - a static image. Then, once the music started, the feeling was that of beholding an "animated" image by De Chirico! Something totally unprecedented!! And it went on, in complete harmony and ethereal Beauty, until the very end... Thanks for such extraordinary experience!

When there is a lot of pressure on the lower strings of the Viola(she was really digging in), a clicking sound might be produced in the result of the enormous amount of pressure on the string. I'm not sure what exactly is going on there, but I experience it sometimes during aggressive parts. (another Violist)
Debussy's chamber output was quite sparse. Near the end of his life he planned to write several sonatas for diverse instruments. There was an outline for a Sonata for oboe, horn and clavecín. (That would've been cool to hear.) Glad that Debussy was able to complete this Jewel of a piece. He certainly had an ear for what combination of instruments could work together beautifully. Luscious performance, ladies!

Hello Pei-San: thanks for seconding my comment. I didn't say anything about the (very good) interpretation so as not to make a long note... -:) Now a different subject: there is something of whose existence I'm aware and it's possible you aren't, namely: a very good (IMO) 20th century flute concerto (flute and orchestra). Its existence is only known from a very small number of people. What will be the best way for me to let you know the details? Shared on Google+

do you dislike viola in general? or just the parts written in this piece? or do you find fault in the violist's performance? or are you directly referring to the literal quality of the viola, i.e. its construction/ timbre?
