  • Hello everyone, hopefully we're all having a wonderful today. Huge thank you to my incredible patron Celine for this request. I've seen some numbers from Be More Chill, and it's a very interesting show. And I've heard such great things about this number, so I'm pretty excited.

This is definitely most people’s favourite song from be more chill and although it’s obviously a great song I think it’s George Salazar that really sells it, he just throws himself into every performance

George Salazar is a wonderful performer! He's also in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Theif musical. There are 2 cast recordings of Be More Chill: off-Broadway and Broadway. I prefer the off-Broadway recordings, but both are great and have pretty much the same cast in both. Be More Chill is severely underrated, in my opinion. It was nominated for a Tony, but they performed a version of this song with James Corden, Sara Bareilles, and Josh Groban but never said what it was from.

Not just that - BMC approached them about having the cast perform a number (probably Michael In the Bathroom) and the Tonys said there wasn’t enough time in the program. Then they aired the spoof without giving BMC any credit. It was pretty messed up.

love this song so so much like its such an accurate depiction of anxiety/a panic attack and also as someone who experienced a similar situation in highschool it hits close to home (i see it does for you too 🤝) i never went to parties idek if that was really a thing?? not in my experience like big parties where people drink and it's a lot of kids from school. but i went to the winter formal (highschool dance, less big than prom) my freshman year with some friends (some i considered some of my closest friends at the time) and some of them were dating each other. i got third wheeled by like all of them, they all ran off in their own pairs and i was left standing around by myself awkwardly feeling like shit. i proceeded to have a sleepover with two of said friends and i don't think they even noticed. i felt kind of resentful towards them but we ended up having fun that night, at least, and i moved on. never went to that dance again, but i did go to prom with my (single) friends and we had a good time.
im also pretty sure the banging on the door was in his head as a manifestation of his anxiety, thus: "i go to open up the door but i dont hear knocking anymore" maybe one person knocked on the door, but i don't think multiple people were banging on it. at least that's my take on it :]

Yeah, I think it's a representation of how overwhelming everything feels when you're having a panic attack. It's like he hears one knock and his brain just goes crazy with anxiety of having to push everything down and act fine and oh god I really need to open the door oh god oh no-
At least that's my interpretation from personal experience

Fun fact: in the book (yes the musical la based on a book) Michael is not alone in the bathroom, there's a girl in the shower, she became Michael love interest at the end.

Glad you loved this! George Salazar is incredible. Glad you got the gist of this as well, a lot happens before this scene basically Jeremy and Michael get into a huge fight. This song is Michael having an anxiety attack while lamenting his friendship.
I have a link for the video for you if you want! It’s on CZcams. Okay quality but it takes place on closing night so the audience is LOUD. But I’d love you to see it, it’s such a fun musical and George is phenomenal.

I love how like his understanding of the story is just the emotional friends and highschool things and like the Jeremy wanting to be cool thing, and just, not knowing about the whole thing with the evil supercomputer in Jeremy's brain that's trying to maybe take over the world

  • @togetheroneearthsparrow4645

I’m late so idk if you’ll see this comment, but George Salazar was recently in a production of Little Shop of Horrors so I’d recommend hearing his version of Suddenly Seymour with a trans woman named MJ Rodriguez as Audrey!

I absolutely loved your reaction thank you so much for posting!! As for the context Michael showed up to this party that he wasn't invited to because he knew jeremy was going to he there (Jeremy had stopped talking to him a couple weeks prior to this) Michael wanted to warn him that the pill that jeremy took to make him cool (the squip) is actually dangerous and he was just trying to save him but jeremy wouldn't listen and called him a loser and left him alone is the bathroom and he lost his best and only friend after twelve years of friendship which then leads him to have a panic attack. Hope that helped you understand a bit better

There's a version that Will Roland did (he's the one that plays Jeremy in the other performances you've watched) and it's interesting to see the different approach and characterizations of Michael that he and George had when singing the song.

I got to see this on Broadway and while I enjoyed it, George Salazar was definitely the best part of the show. I got a selfie and signature after the show and I was so happy.

I saw the west end cast in London after being locked in my room for nearly two years due the pandemic. I’m immune compromised due to my illness and the tubes that I have that help keep me living so i had to basically lockdown for 2 years, my mum is my carer so she had to lockdown (apart from picking medicine and food) and my dad couldn’t work without putting me at risk so he had to lockdown with us. Even when it was safe for healthy people to start going out it wasn’t for those of us compromised for a while. Once I had my third vaccine I was able to go out very carefully, masked up (I’ve always worn masks for a few years before the pandemic due to my immune system so that didn’t bother me but my dad really struggles having to stay masked up) and socially distanced. I had lost a lot of my fellow chronic illness warrior friends to the pandemic (25 passed in the first year alone, 17 in the second) and it was devastating and terrifying. When you have a rare disease it’s really important to have friends who understand and have experienced the stuff your going through. Support groups with other people like me saved my life after I first got sick as they made the loneliness less and they became like family. My family and I grieved for each and everyone we lost to the pandemic. With rare conditions you do lose people every year (before covid) so you do get used to it but the speed in which it was happening was crazy. It was hard. After we were allowed to start going out and my doctors gave me the clear to go on a small trip my parents surprised me with a trip to London (I’m from the north east of England) as I’m a theatre girl (my whole family is, I was actually a theatre performer as a child before I got sick) and it was terrifying to be out somewhere so busy but also amazing. It was literally the first time I left the house in 2 years except for hospital stays. They took me to see three shows and be more chill was one, I didn’t expect to cry so hard haha. I think it was the combination of being in the real world for the first time in a while and being able to see something I loved so much. As a performer who could no longer perform after I got sick I knew more than anyone what those actors on the stage must have felt being unable to do what they love during the pandemic and seeing their joy of being back made me so emotional and also made me a bit sad as there’s nothing I’d love more than to be back on the stage myself. But also the show is so well written and it makes you laugh and cry and feel so much joy by the end. Honestly I just felt alive for the first time in a while. I was in so much pain but the show and the cast were so good I didn’t care. It also reminded me of the friends I’d lost as one of the things we all loved was theatre and while I was watching it it was like I could feel them all looking down on me watching it with me. Its honestly is a memory I’ll never forget. If it comes back to west end or broadway or it tours i sincere recommend going to see it.

Hi you should definitely check out Gaten matarazzo's (Dustin from Stranger things) version of this song. You will not regret it he is also playing Jared in the brodway production of Dear evan hansen right now.
