NAC or Glutathione? They Aren't the Same

  • Wrongfully, many think by taking NAC, they are getting glutathione.
What they are getting is cysteine.
Cysteine is the KEY ingredient of Glutathione - but it is NOT glutathione.
Glutathione is made up of cysteine, glycine and glutamate.
In order to make glutathione from those components, magnesium, ATP and two healthy genes are required.
There are some individuals, such as myself, that do not make glutathione well.
    Why?
A genetic mutation found in the GCLC gene, helps make glutathione, is not very functional. It's slow in making glutathione when the body needs it.

This explanation of making glutathione is amazing! I know someone who was told to take NAC by a doctor for brain health, but they experienced the opposite effect. They felt terribly irritable and also unwell. They tried twice to take NAC then said never again! They take glutathione successfully. Thank you Dr. Lynch. The more you teach us the more we can help each other!

It’s comforting to know I’m not alone regarding this type of reaction. So many people praise NAC and I’m happy to hear it helps them, but it triggered anhedonia, exhaustion, and severe depression in me…been taking liposomal glutathione plus for a couple weeks now and I wish I started this sooner! Really thankful for people like Dr. Lynch. His advice and research have greatly improved my quality of life.

For much older people, i wouldn’t recommend NAC as its only a precursor, you would need to combine it with glutathione to actually supply the depleted amounts as you age, and NAC to help recycle it. Sometimes the amount precursors provide isn’t enough to actually supply the glutathione levels the body needs, specially for much older people or with low glutathione levels in the body already. its good to combine both as they function differently as NAC isn’t solely about being a glutathione precursor.

FYI! Liposomal glutathione cannot even enter the cell to produce endogenous glutathione. If your supplements cannot deliver cysteine directly into the cell, you're wasting your money, and practically none of the therapeutic benefits will never be fully realized, ie: intracellular detoxification, heavy metal chelation, or to even make those lymphocytes responsible for ensuring optimal immune response.

Dr Lynch, you’re wondering about carnivore diet and iron. I’ve been carnivore for 14 months. Recent labs showed two scores out of range. Homocysteine 13.7, RDW 16.2. Everything else was in normal range. These scores are what led me to your work. I now have a StrateGene consult in two days with Chris Bramich. A few major gene mutations/variants do leap out me. As for the Glutathione cycle, I have GST family and GGT1. I’m confident that Chris can help me coordinate a plan to move forward with all of my SNPs. • @DrBenLynch
      @DrBenLynch  Před 2 lety +4

super high B12 doesn't mean that much without looking at other factors. It could mean you're taking a lot of B12, it could mean you're low in methyl folate, low in glutathione, high in oxidative stress, high in heavy metals, SIBO and others. Sounds like inflammation is hitting you for some reason - look for infections or environmental chemical exposures or both. Plus physical and mental stressors. Working with an integrative doctor is key here. There are many labs you can use - consider working with Dr. Bernarda Zenker via telemedicine.

Dr lynch, I listened to your talk with Dr. Holly Lucille, in which you have mentioned how taking Glutathione orally and letting it pass through the gut could induce\worsen SIBO. Is this a concern for someone not suffering from SIBO? I wish you could discuss how different forms of glutathione perform in that angel, for example s-acetyl l-glutathione or glutathione reduced?
Also, you said the acetyl group detaches in the stomach, is there research pointing to that? if not, what makes you think that? I wonder what do you think happens further down the gut when you take something like s-acetyl l-glutathione orally? do you think it is being broken apart by the liver and then rebuilt from its building blocks? or do you think it is already broken down in the gut? or does it stay whole and gets to the bloodstream and broken in cell (another claim I heard). and do you think it might worsen SIBO?
be really happy to hear you discuss this.

My question too. Mine doesn’t exceed 99 on my sickest days. The last time I got a proper fever was 7 years ago with H1N1 flu. Stopped getting fevers after that. Two years ago I found out about my mold illness.

So my dr told me to take nac 2x day because it's"good for me" & I've been very irritable & moody lately...but never made the connection - just know it's not typical for me. My glutathione was low on my last bloodwork, so I started glutathione & I'm switching over to your optimal one... should I stop talking the nac?

NAC is an anti-oxidant its good to recycle the glutathione they have different functions. Having only one anti-oxidant isn’t benefitial.

I was adding the optimal liposomal glutathione plus to my smoothies and sharing sips with my 3 year old and he loved it! I have since stopped doing the smoothies after experiencing some of the “side effects” and after learning more from these videos but I have autoimmune stuff going on. My son was fine and his mood and Energy was improved. As far as dosing I use refer to Young’s rule. You can also look up Cowling’s rule. What helped me in deciding is realizing that the vitamins/supplements are naturally occurring as part of processes of the body. Of course you don’t want to over do it but start with one thing and notice the changes. Kids respond really quickly and can often tell you whether something is working by their behavior :)

These videos are not for beginners, but I would say there is a lot of other information from other sites that glosses over nutrients, which is a big waste of time. Your videos get down to the Nitty Gritty. From now on, I won"t waste my time on the others. Thanks!

I prefer regulating it personally vs an all at once amount. Plus the cost of injectable glutathione is very high - not to mention not pleasant and time consuming.
I designed a glutathione lozenge which I take every day usually in the morning immediately upon waking. I take 1/2.

Hi, I have many symptoms that point to low glutathione and My GI map results showed very low glutathione levels. I supplemented with L-glutathione from ortho molecular and it gave me really bad chest pain. I stopped and the side effect went away within 2 days. Would your glutathione plus likely give me the same side effect? Is there anything I can take to help my body tolerate the glutathione? NAC gives me terrible insomnia and its very stimulating for me. . Any help would be appreciated!

    • @DrBenLynch
      @DrBenLynch  Před 2 lety +2

Glutathione is touchy. I'll do a video on this soon. Couple things will help you tolerate glutathione better. 1) PQQ Lozenge. Why? Having healthy levels of oxidative stress before taking glutathione protects the glutathione from getting damaged. Damaged glutathione makes one have side effects. 2) Cofactors. Yes, the Plus version should be more tolerated and was designed for people experiencing side effects from glutathione. I highly recommend using Optimal Liposomal Glutathione Plus - and just a few drops to start - but only after you've been on PQQ Lozenge for a week. www.seekinghealth.com/products/optimal-liposomal-glutathione-plus-30-servings Glutathione is best used more frequently throughout the day in smaller amounts than higher amounts once. The bad chest pain likely came from high levels of hydrogen sulfide and sulfites. SulfiteX is helpful to process sulfites and thus support your healthy breathing. www.seekinghealth.com/products/sulfitex-600-servings Use SulfiteX Drops IF you experience the same chest tightness from the Optimal Liposomal Glutathione Plus. Do note though that this glutathione formulation has the molybdenum in it to support the hydrogen sulfide breakdown.

I love Ben Lynch !! Do take few seeking health supp incl P5P & niacin.
Just like having supp. NAC does not guarantee intracellular GSH synthesis, likewise having supp. GSH does Not guarantee that 1) your cells will be able to efficiently absorb & utilize GSH 2) or this will boost your intracellular GSH levels endogenously
I think Methionine is even better than NAC, if you take it with a methylated active B complex. This would give you the benefits of methionine, along with endogenous synthesis of cysteine & SAMe both of which are critically required. You cannot make cysteine endogenously without reasonable methionine intake!! Neither can you have healthy SAMe (universal methylator) levels without methionine !!
I pair free form methionine with methylated B complex , and occasionally top up P5P.
Further if you want to boost GSH synthesis, add free form Glycine (not NAC) to above regimen.
Over the years, I've found Taurine far more therapeutic compared to NAC. Glycine & Taurine are unique & have immense non-protein functions (100s of then). And Taurine is also an antioxidant that assists GSH redox cycle just like vit C.
Hence, my stack includes Methionine, Glycine, Taurine & methylated B complex without any NAC whatsoever.
Note : For those who still want to have supplemental NAC - make sure you are also having B6, molybdenum, selenium, magnesium, B2 & Glycine along with NAC else you will develop "NAC intolerance" and would not get endogenous synthesis of GSH !
To me, endogenous SAMe, cysteine, taurine & GSH synthesis has following key modulators :
    1. Methionine
    2. P5P
    3. Folate, B12
    4. Glycine (Serine, TMG, Heme)
    5. Molybdenum, Selenium
    6. Magnesium, B2
    7. Vit C (GSH redox)
    8. Zinc, Copper (Heme, Iron)
