What is the maximum window period for HIV test in India? - Dr. Ramakrishna Prasad

- The term window period is used for that time duration when the HIV infection has already occurred but the body has not already made antibodies against the HIV infection that can be detected on screening tests, such as the ELISA. The duration of the window period depends on which test is used to identify HIV infection. The test which are used to identify HIV infection earliest after infection has occurred is called the HIV PCR test or the viral load. This can detect HIV infection as early as 7 to 10 days after infection has occurred. The second test which can be used and which can detect HIV infection as early as 2 weeks is the combined, HIV antibody and the p24 antibody test. This can detect infection as early as about 2 weeks. The commonly used HIV antibody test or ELISA tests and ELFA test can detect HIV infection, as early as about 3 weeks. All the tests are readily available in India in larger cities and should be able to establish HIV infection, within 6 weeks under all circumstances.

1.Hi have taken pep ( viropil tablets ) within 36 hour's after an exposure . 2 . taken tridot test after 5 days of exposure to ensure not infected earlier . 3 . Now I completed pep exactly after 3 days i.e after 33 days of exposure I took hiv 1 rna PCR qualitative test result negative . 4 . again after 10 days of pep i.e after 40 daysI took now quantitative hiv 1 rna PCR test target not detected 5 .now again after 22 days of pep i.e after 52 I took HIV 1& 2 antibodies & P24 Combo-Serum method elisa got value 0.42 non reactive . 6. On the same day after 22 days of pep i.e 52 days of exposure Tridot and western blot and rna PCR 2 qualitative all are negative Please confirm do I am totally safe or do any test required

If you are infected with HIV, it usually takes from three weeks to two months for your immune system to produce HIV antibodies. During this "window period" you can test "negative" for HIV even if you are infected. If you think you were exposed to HIV, you should wait for two months before being tested. You can also test right away and then again after two or three months. If you are infected, you can transmit HIV to others during the window period even if you test negative. In fact, during this period of early infection, you have the greatest chance of passing HIV infection to others.
About 5% of people take longer than two months to produce antibodies. Testing at 3 and 6 months after possible exposure will detect almost all HIV infections. However, there are no guarantees as to when an individual will produce enough antibodies to be detected by an HIV test. If you have any unexplained symptoms, talk with your health care provider and consider re-testing for HIV.
