One thing I learned when I was a manager, i went from being the all-too-common dictator style manager to just one of the guys with my employees. I made them as equal to me as I could without losing my authority. I empowered them, let them make some of the decisions a lot of employees would ask of their manager normally. In a way I was helping them learn to be a good manager themselves. A job came in, I let them pick which part they wanted to do and I took whatever task was left. Morale was extremely high, employee retention was 100% and they all loved their jobs. If the work was done, floor swept, everything cleaned up they could take a long break. No micromanaging at all, which is all too rampant in our world today.
