- Days of heavy rain have hit the South African province of KwaZulu-Nata leading to floods which have killed at least 45 people, according to authorities.
Emergency services are searching for survivors as many remain missing.
Key roads across the city of Durban are shut and mudslides have destroyed many homes leaving people standing on rooftops awaiting rescue.
The floods come as scientists warn that climate change is fuelling heavier rainfall than usual in southern Africa.

mud/land slides are no joke. they happen so fast and with little warning. I experienced it myself while staying in a cliff-side apartment in Mexico. in the middle of the night there was a sudden crashing and shaking of earth. I jumped out of bed thinking it was an earthquake, but before I knew what was happening a large tree and mounds of mud came crashing into the apartment. I was so fortunate that more mud from the cliff did not fall into the house otherwise it would've fallen off the cliff and I'd have been buried. my heart truly goes out to the people of SA and their families. What- dam really you feel like there be some kind of warning system now with all the technology we have I mean we have tornado sirens there should be some other kind of alert system
@@jodyhakala-ristow7014 that's a really good point. at the very least they could warn people that mud/land slides are "high risk" from heavy rains and suggest they leave cliff-side areas. But not giving any warning at all definitely plays a role. like in my case, I was a tourist and had no idea I was in a dangerous spot, so they can't expect everyone to just know if an area is at risk. I bet lives would be saved if they gave warnings.
It's now 306 dead. The pollution speaks volumes too. 🙏 Electricity and water were always disrupted before the flooding. Government must make serious changes and provide proper service delivery to its people.. 🙏

As a south african i can attest to the fact that we have had so much rain during the summer and very little sunlight much more than usual. As the season is changing to winter this rainfall was just the nail on the coffin. And it is still going to rain more this weekend going into next week. My uncle also died yesterday bcoz of the heavy rain that pushed the sand onto the wall which killed him while he was in bed. I hope all those who survive this can make it through the trauma of it all!!

I saw photos on one of our local South African facebook pages where skeletal remains from one of the grave yards that have been washed up from the floods. It is horrific. Numbers are now over 300 and they predict more rains over the weekend. I don't stay in Kwazulu Natal but in Gauteng (in Pretoria close to Johannesburg) but I have family that stay there. We going to be getting rain too Saturday and Sunday. Its so sad.

It's extremely devastating and sad, we all know someone who has either lost a loved one or their house. These clips don't do any justice to what is actually going on. People have been stranded with no way of getting essentials like food and water. We haven't had running water since the flooding and some have no electricity. People either can't get to work or like myself unable to send out goods as there is no way to wash before sending out, besides the fact that some roads are no go zones. It's absolutely devastating sitting in a place scared of rain coming again because you have no idea if your house with damage will keep you safe and no means to go to a place of safety. Stay safe everyone.

One thing for sure South Africa and Kwazulu Natal in particular is very resilient. We will overcome because God is on our side. As a Durbanite myself it's humbling to see how private organisations, government, UN and individuals are coming together and working as one. Climate change is gonna be with us for many years to come, ours as people is to take care of each other and environment in the interim.

To give context to us who were there and saw it, shipping containers were flying in the air like in a tornado not that they were washed away. I drove past and saw them myself. One of the most terrifying drives in my life thus far

Having grown up in Durban, I am in my 70's. This is not the first massive flood and it wont be the last. One of the biggest problems is that there is a tendancy to build on the flood plains of rivers and streams that flood regularly.
Flood runoff areas are built on or flattened out. Streams and gullies that take the flood waters are bulldozed over and built on, because they have been dry for a few years.
Dont always blame the climate or the weather, look at the town planners instead.
