Barcelona is not typical of Spain--only Barcelona is like this. Madrid, Segovia, Sevilla , Grenada, Cordoba, Salamanca and all of southern Spain and select parts of northern Spain (Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route) is lovely and the people are the best! The rest of Spain has a great sense of humor and fun. Just skip Barcelona (which is near France) and go a little further down to Madrid. Madrid has more sights to see, way better museums, closer to ancient roman ruins (Italica) and medieval Castles (Segovia).

They'll probably be able to afford to live there, and maybe even get a job that isn't some menial minimum wage seasonal gig selling tat or coffee to rude, entitled tourists who think the locals should be grateful to be in the mere presence of their benign benefactors. There are similar Mediterranean countries, what does "similar" mean? , almost the same climate and beaches but countries like Spain allowed balconing, people naked, etc. I don't want to generalize but in some places like Mallorca, Benidorm, Barcelona, etc, local people have seen balconing- young drunk people dead or with several injuries, which is even worse!- For local people? impossible rentals and in some cases dreaming with noise until 5 a.m. Yes: you are enjoying but believe me, Spanish people work instead of our fame! Unluckily, law-abading tourists have been blamed because - let's be honest- in Italy tourism has been managed in another way. Roma has high "rates" for visiting each place, the rest of the country is not a "night owl", etc. Believe me, I don't hate you. Licences should be revoked and only a small fraction of residences be allowed licences in tourist areas. This is a europe wide problem happening in many tourist areas. England has the same problem not only in London, but also in tourist areas on the coast towns both in the south and north of England.
I grew up in Bohuslän and we have the same problem with tourism, everything gets more expensive and we cant even get housing as they rich arses from over the seas keep buying up our coastal towns and the governmental solution has become to tear down historical landmarks so people can live in apartments Its insane people in small towns have to live in shitty apertments or move into cities beacuse greedy tourist lovers are ruining our way of life, to be clear some of the people of these towns have lived there for generations some going back thousands of years

I think that the appeal for most people is just the feeling of being in an environment that doesn’t feel “clinical” or “fake” like a hotel often feels like, but even then, lot of AirBnBs now are literally just landlords turning their apartment complexes into hotels- cities honestly need to ban services like AirBnB, not just in Barcelona.

It fit my family better 🤷🏽♀️ instead of getting a bunch of hotels and sharing a room with kids we were able to get a 3 bed apartment for cheaper and a better experience.

I don't know what they are complaining about. They try to make it sound like as if Barcelona was the center of the Earth with by far the most number of tourists. So, I looked it up, on Wikipedia, the latest data they have from 2023 doesn't even rank Barcelona in the top 10 most visited city in the world. Turkey is followed by London and Dubai. Then, they had data from 2018, Barcelona ranked a lowly 34th. They are making something out of nothing. But, hey since they don't want foreigners, don't go there, not just tourists, all multinationals should stop organizing conferences and trade shows there. Welcome to living in a city centre in the 21st century. Somethings (and places) aren't for everyone. I'd love to live in the centre of London, oh how wonderful would life be, as a born and bred English man, but unfortunately it's not 1650 anymore, the population has grown a little, and whilst I can't live in the kings court, I do have a passport and can live just about anywhere else i choose. Housing shortages are definitely caused by tourists. Also by “digital nomads” that come here to live rising up the rents. Barcelona is not typical of Spain--only Barcelona is like this. Madrid, Segovia, Sevilla , Grenada, Cordoba, Salamanca and all of southern Spain and select parts of northern Spain (Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route) is lovely and the people are the best! The rest of Spain has a great sense of humor and fun. Just skip Barcelona (which is near France) and go a little further down to Madrid. Madrid has more sights to see, way better museums, closer to ancient roman ruins (Italica) and medieval
Castles (Segovia).

As a Spanish I am not angry with you. Do you know why? There are similar Mediterranean countries, what does "similar" mean? , almost the same climate and beaches but countries like Spain allowed balconing, people naked, etc. I don't want to generalize but in some places like Mallorca, Benidorm, Barcelona, etc, local people have seen balconing- young drunk people dead or with several injuries, which is even worse!- For local people? impossible rentals and in some cases dreaming with noise until 5 a.m. Yes: you are enjoying but believe me, Spanish people work instead of our fame! Unluckily, law-abading tourists have been blamed because - let's be honest- in Italy tourism has been managed in another way. Roma has high "rates" for visiting each place, the rest of the country is not a "night owl", etc. Believe me, I don't hate you. Licences should be revoked and only a small fraction of residences be allowed licences in tourist areas. This is a europe wide problem happening in many tourist areas. @@guff9567 I live in a city in Spain which suffers overtourism, where is my money? Tourism doesnt bring so much richness as you think. You can argue that governments also make profit on tourism but this is invested in infrastructure for tourists, not locals.

Welcome to living in a city centre in the 21st century. Somethings (and places) aren't for everyone. I'd love to live in the centre of London, oh how wonderful would life be, as a born and bred English man, but unfortunately it's not 1650 anymore, the population has grown a little, and whilst I can't live in the kings court, I do have a passport and can live just about anywhere else i choose.
Or should everyone go home and let the native people of each and every country live solely in their birth towns and cities? How bizarre that would be? Not to mention boring. They are essentially fighting for an impossible and undesirable outcome. Why don't they go back to their birth towns and cities, and would that help the problem? Or is barcelona only for locals (and Spanish from other areas for that matter)? Surely many of the protestors are not from the centre of Barcelona, nor metro Barcelona for that matter? Potentially, there is no end to their demands. So basically, they are been pretty unreasonable themselves.
Housing shortages are not caused by tourists. The problem can just be solved by building more housing.

Housing shortages are definitely caused by tourists. Also by “digital nomads” that come here to live rising up the rents. I am from Sevilla where is also very hardly hit by mass tourisms and let me tell you that very few people live now in the center. So where did all those houses go? For Airbnbs and hotels.
