  • An edited, illustrated and narrated playthrough of the game Dwarf Fortress
The thunderous stomping never ceases. A single, frozen eye watches over the gates. A step outside means death, yet also life. Stakud and the dwarves have a plan to reclaim the surface and the time to put it into play is near.

Man, Stakud is a real one. The fact that she's avoided making new friends makes it seem like she's far more focused on exacting vengeance. I imagine her sitting there with a thousand yard stare, kind of watching "through" everyone else dancing; present in body, but not really present in mind.

I would imagine her personality got damaged by the trauma of watching everyone she was friends with die to the undead cyclops. I like to think after her vengeance has been extracted, she might be able to make friends again.

I'm really impressed how threating of an antagonist the cyclops ended up being despite not being on screen all that much. Gave me similar feelings to horror movies like alien or jaws.

    • @hostergaard
      @hostergaard Před rokem +18

      Its just standing there, menacingly!
Jokes aside, the alpaca wool thing is what I love about dwarf fortress, when they first programmed necromancy in they made it so anything biological could be reanimated, even individual hairs would come alive (they had to remove that, as no attack could hit them due to being so small) and when they first ran it, a deer skin, I think, came alive and started killing dwarfs. They kept it in cause it made as much sense as animated skeletons. I mean, how horrific is the image of a empty skin stalking you? Real necromantic horror!
Everything is programmed so even they can't always predict what happens, I just love the surprises that comes up.
I made one character once who for some reason decided to chop heads of his kills and keep as trophies, he got quite the collection going when he botched a bandit camp raid, in desperation he threw every weapon he had at pursuing bandits but missed. Then, as a last ditch attempt he started throwing the heads he had collected. Somehow, he nailed and killed the boss, which made the other bandits run of and he survived. That is when the became Uthret Skullthrower and his specialty was throwing skulls. I later learned about a tower containing the secret of life and dead, his mission became to learn the secret so he could throw and then revive his heads to attack his enemies (as it turns out, skulls from butchering wont revive, but heads loped off in combat will).
Google Further adventures with Uthret Skullthrower dwarf fortress if you want the full story. Also, I had one adventurer who got his arm bit of by an alligator who then beat the alligator to dead with said arm.

Note on the traps, creatures that "know" about the traps will not trigger them. Unsure how that mechanic works exactly but I think it's if they've seen another creature been caught in the same trap or they themselves have been caught in it before. Needs further testing to be sure.
And a little sidenote on migrants. If you want to stop them temporarily or premanently you can go into the in-game settings and change the population cap to your current population, and change it again once you feel ready to accept more. This also works for visitors. (and if you want your dwarves to use protection, change the Child/Birth cap to the same).

And I only recently started making my way through your back catalog since the Steam release, but I think part of what makes Skullhorror one of my favorites is that it had a trajectory similar to this, and at the end was allowed to pass gracefully into legend. I absolute love the idea of a bunch of dwarves in a zombie-infested land just having a deep pit they push the zombies into and occasionally throw rocks at them. Primitive yet effective, and hilarious.

    Hey Krugg!
Just wanted to say thank you!!! You got me into Dwarf Fortress, and it is now in my top 10 favorite games for sure.
I love this game, and I love your content!! There really is no other youtuber like you out there, and it's not just because you play a niche game. Every video always just has so much heart, soul, and effort put into it, and you can really tell!
So anyways, good luck with the future of your channel! I'll definitely be around here for a good while. :)

Absolutely love the stories that come up, and the fact I (and I'm sure many others) felt relieved when that cyclops finally was done, and with memorial hall setup.. all kinds of emotions.
Excited for more stories, and I think thats for the best to end this one here, kinda like don't overstretch a good movie/show

For the next settlement, they could work more as a Monster Hunting force, or exploratory force? Seeking out ancient secrets like the Demon slab, what Adamantine is, or that gem wall that was briefly found in episode two. So many secrets in this world, why wouldn’t the motherland want to understand them? And, if you want for the Monster hunting path, you could try to hunt legendary monsters akin to the Glaciers Eye.

Hey Krugg, Just wanted to say, that you are an amazing story teller and I always enjoy watching your videos! You don't need to convince me that the next fortress will be good - I know, you will have a great narrative for it. Another thing I want to add here: Usually I am pretty busy and wont come around to watch your video for a couple of days. Please do not take this as disinterest! According to some creators, the first day is extremely important for the CZcams algorithm. But I think you have a very loyal and supporting base of people, who will watch your videos - be it a couple days delayed, but we all appreciate your storytelling!

Really love the new graphics! They complement your art, and makes everything on the surface level so much easier for me to grasp. I find it so much easier to be immersed in the _story,_ when my brain doesn't have to work overtime to make as much sense of all the shapes and squiggles in addition! ;p
Love all your work either way, but this was a great experience!

This was a fantastic little series, can't wait for the next chapter.
Also a tiny hint for future forts: if you send a squad to demand a 1-time tribute from a site, you can establish trading with that civilization. That way you can start forts with other civs and still contact Nökortorad for lore purposes.

That was awesome! I am usually pretty good at not getting overly invested in the characters in series like this, knowing that their failures are all part of the developing story but I couldn't help myself but get really supportive of Stakud's quest. I really thin that ending it here was a good idea.
