Really surprising as when I first took an interest in df it was Kruggs videos that were recommended to me for getting “inspiration” for your fort. I’ve always recommended his videos after people watch basic tutorials.
I think people like me are the issue as I’ve just checked and realised all these years I thought I was subbed and I wasn’t……
Sudden bird attacks and recent nomadic visitors. Sounds like a shift in migration patterns causing nomads to change hunting grounds.
... If this was any other game, that would sound far-fetched, but this is Dwarf Fortress. I'd 100% believe this being a thing that's going on with the world-sim. >)X^D

It is interesting that as soon as he was sent home, the birds began attacking in force. Makes me wonder if he really was protecting the fortress.

My favorite part of having long running fortresses, is moving on from them once they are running like a clock, starting a new fort nearby, and seeing who migrates to the new fort.
I had my favorite super warrior captain of the guard migrate to my new fort on year 3 one time. The Dwarf single handedly trained my militia and defended the gates. So glad to see his bearded mug knocking on my door.

Stack really feels like the overarching protag of this world. It's actually amazing that she keeps popping up in all these, frankly, quite disparate forts. I would love to see, down the track, an offshoot- even if it was an alternate timeline, so to speak- where you play as her in adventure mode. From a narrative perspective, I don't know how that'd work exactly, but maybe the goal could be to revisit her original fort to see how they're going and pass through North Bridge on the way. Maybe one last adventure before retiring, or perhaps *SPOLIERS for this video* her new daughter, once grown, goes adventuring herself, and isn't heard from for a while, so Stack goes out to find her.
Either way, as always, absolutely love the videos.
I love Rofa more than anyone, but 3 newborns in the Fortress? We should make the King of the Beasts his own Enclosure with infrastructure to feed him giant grasshoppers. That way both the merchants and the Newborns are safe. What a project though 😅
In my experience the red-to-green mood indicator for each dwarf doesn't appear to represent their current emotional state, but an average of their thoughts sampled over an extended period. I've had dwarves be abjectly miserable (they walk through miasma into the rain, they get covered in goblin blood and see their friend's corpse - the average battle on the surface!) and still have a yellow-green mood icon for a few months, as if it takes time for bad experiences to "settle in". The thing to watch out for the most is the unrecoverable dwarves - dwarves that no longer get happy thoughts from common sources that can balance them out, like inebriation, a good fight, obtaining nice possessions, or sleeping in a fancy bedroom. Those can tantrum-spiral just from negative social interactions in a tavern just because they don't have anything else that can make them happy, and for me, I've had a better time just exiling them because they don't seem to get over that sort of situation before it's too late.

So I've been watching the old episodes like Steelclutches cause I'd never seen them before. Anyone else want to see Kruggsmash take on some of those past challenges like setting up in an evil biome that reanimates corpses?
Someday, someday. Those fortresses can be fun and all, but the challenge does sorta become negligible after a short while in most cases. I'm sure i'll explore an evil biome agani someday (though I did set up in one for the Nokortorad series early last year)

I get random cravings of rewatching something. Mostly short forts, but lately I'm in the mood for some monsterkiller.
I've said it before in one of the videos, in my first successful fortress, the tavern attracted a dingo-woman bard who ended up staying on as a long-term resident and she was one of my favorite sites around the fortress. I like the people who wander in, even if it eventually means someone's going to be a vampire or a werewolf or just out and out murder a dwarf.
I'm honestly glad this aviary project turned out better than the Roc project of a fortess long past. Birds! We love birds! (We also love bird-dwarves, that bird-dwarf mod you covered was cool.)
Oh man, 8th birthday means I've been watching you since almost the start. Here's to 8 years more, you beautiful bearded bastard!
I'd love to see this series continue for a while, watching these new dwarves grow to be adults would be fascinating, even if technically not much "happens"-- after all, technically this series now averages 2+ ingame years per episode (skewed from the time skip). A time skip here and there, or an episode that somehow just ends up being an overview of 4 years passing, I'd enjoy those and I doubt I'm the only one.
And I'm excited to hear Qud will be a regular thing too; going back and forth every couple weeks between the two games is something I'm really excited to hear will happen. I love this channel, and Caves of Qud is one of my all-time favorite games, and to see it fit so well alongside the DF content of this channel is wonderful.

Funny thing about the wisp situation: I had a fort I wanted to make some kind of thematic "exile" for dwarfs that were too upset, so I would put them in a squad with uniform set to nothing but their weapons and a loincloth, and then set their paths to around the caverns and a single small tavern to eat and drink. In the end they would develop traits for not wearing any clothes that ended up getting them in a better mood somehow

I'm not sure if you'll see this krugg but a couple of years ago I used to work a job where there was a possibility of me being inflicted with violence, it was everything i could do to not have a panic attack before starting my shift. I would listen to episodes like this of your dwarf fortress stuff on the way to work and I found solace in the stories and communities you would weave together and it helped me find just a little moment of peace in an awful time of my life.
I don't always watch your stuff immediately, but I always watch your stuff eventually. Love your storytelling and accompanying art. Both would be good separately, but they are great in combination.

Maybe it's how he copes with undeath? Instead of a night creature like vampires and zombies, killing sentient creatures, he channels it to giant savage animals.

Oh I feel so bad for Wisp. I remember vaguely pumps are operated with your feet... If that is still a skill that she might enjoy mastering... Perhaps she could serenade the tavern as a singer, or find a deeper connection to her diety as priest. Could be a turn for her in her story. Bonus points for her pelaton screw pump room powering a mist generator... Though I don't think you could easily set it up to automatically have her exercise... Unless... You have a burrow with only her, the pump, and a food stockpile just for her with some pressure plates so when she gets hungry it opens her pelaton pump, and when she is thirsty it locks... Or only have her with the pump operator labor, and she powers the tavern mist generator at your manual discretion as you take a peek at your tavern.

Wouldn't it be amazing if we went long enough to where we see this generation flourish, the fortress gets some new blood in somehow like via petition, and see their decedents start life? I think this series has a maximum of two generations worth of stories. After that, retire it and see if the future children of Spearcavern get an itch to homestead their own slice of the northern frontier.
