  • My ideas in this video might be a little harsh...but they are intended to help give clarity and direction in your fragrance journey. Since this can be an expensive and addictive hobby, I believe that we should be as intentional and selective as we can...whether you decide to stay above ground, or dive head first into the rabbit hole that is the beautiful artistry of perfumery.

I've left similar kinds of comments early on in my discovery of this channel. I'm so glad someone else is giving him props for being so philosophical and analytical of the psychological aspects of fragrance enjoyment and fragrance buying. I'm so nosey about how other people organise their lives, how they respond to things, their memories and ideas, their requirements and aesthetic sensibilities etc. Fascinating!

So many people from outside 'frag comm' would wince and cringe at this sort of video, baffled at the 'over thinking' and analysis of something as simple as buying fragrance. Alas, your kin are here Justin. I LOOOOOVE hearing about how other people curate their collections, what their goals are when shopping, how they personally categorise fragrances etc. I find it fascinating. So many folks just assume everybody is kind of the same in their approach but that is absolutely untrue. People are so delightfully idiosyncratic and have their own quirky systems in place. Love it! Wearable art indeed.🤩👍

My grandmother used to tell me that; "A few dropps of a good perfume can dress you up completely ".
Meaning that you can dress in a very simple way, but the way you smell makes your personality presence.

  • @8KoG8
    @8KoG8 Před rokem +7

Fragrance is an accessory so it has two aspects it needs to cover function and personality. Function is time, place and setting . So you have the four seasons, day and night , inside and outside, casual, smart casual and formal. you can cover this with more or less 20 ish fragrances. Next you have personality and this is if we are keeping it basic , happy, dour , and comforting . Finally this is entirely optional a signature scent for important event , something you wear to mark important occasions and milestones and people associate you with this mean at best 5 more fragrance so if you are being purely practical I would say at the high end you need 20-25 scents, but you can probably get away with 15 , which is the sweet spot for most people .
This seems kinda unseemly to me at this point because I have like 700 bottles , but I will be the first to admit that most of them barely get worn , let alone worn regularly , but occasionally the mood strikes me to pull a dusted up bottle and spray it . But there is also the fact I have a lot of really challenging and artistic stuff which can hardly be worn regularly at all like Amouage silver oud for example , which I do like but almost nobody around me can stand .

Hear hear!! Isn't it great to get home after a hard day at work and see that a package has been delivered; a package containing a box filled with samples of expensive, beautiful niche fragrances to spend the evening with. Even better when you can't remember what you ordered, only that you ordered at least 20. I use them as educational tools, do everything I can with them to get my moneys worth. I hop onto Fragrantica, onto YT etc and study them before they inevitably run out. I also scrutinise their performance. Some of them smell gorgeous but are insipid and lack tenacity, silage and projection so I cannot justify a full bottle purchase. So much fun! I VERY rarely blind buy full bottles.

I got a bottle of my favourite fragrance today from my beautiful wife for my birthday, Green Irish tweed 😁 I've never owned a fragrance over 90 euro so I'm very very happy. My wife is Brazilian she went to the shop to ask about the fragrance and the lady immediately said to her "ohh that's very expensive" more or less implying you can't afford that. But she was very polite back and said yes I know I still want to buy it thank you. I hope the sales lady learned not to assume things about people. Keep up the great videos 👍

The sales lady is a yokel masquerading as an urbane sophisticate. Here in England, all folks who work in luxury retail know to NEVER judge a book by its cover. The wealthiest, most under-the-radar 'old money' folks come into boutiques and stores looking like slobs and very happy to spend. To the uninitiated naked eye at a quick first appraisal, they can look like farm hands or gardeners. Especially the aristocracy over a certain age. They don't need to dress up like nouveau-riche peacocks to impress anybody-- they're the real deal, they care to impress nobody. I'm sorry your sweetheart was served by someone so undeserving.

I agree with the redundancy and wanting more depth eventually. As I mentioned in the community post that you made of this video, I grew up not liking fragrances much. They were always "something" to wear to smell good, like the icing on the cake of a nice outfit or a well-fitted suit, and a great complement to a date or going to church or a gala or other events. It was never something that was an "art" to me. Add to the fact that I whenever I passed a fragrance counter at Macy's or Boston Store or any major department store, the sales associates were trying to get me (and others) to smell the "latest and greatest" designer perfume only for it to be "okay" and only for it to be priced out the nose that I'd laugh so bad at who would even pay that much for a bottle of "scented water." It wasn't until I entered this community and really started trying stuff that I found out what was missing from all those trips to the department store and all those inexpensive fragrance gift sets filled with Curve for Men, Coty's Aspen, Cool Water, Halston Z-14, Grey Flannel, and other classic and sometimes "dated" scents. There is true magic in the discovery of something different and had I known the real art of fragrance back then like I do now, I would've done more searching and I would've gotten into this sooner.

This is why I watch your videos and have stayed subscribed after unsubscribing from those who just have the same top 10 videos...I like the more thought provoking takes, even if I don't always agree.
Right now I'm more in the "blend" category, but probably closer to the practical side. I don't care at all about compliments, but I'm in confined spaces with others (such as work) 6 days a week. While I want frags that wow me and that I fully enjoy, I don't want them to offend others. I only have one day a week, at most, to wear whatever I want, and overspray as much as I want, because I'm not worried about offending others.
So my collection (17 bottles) is composed mostly of frags such as Montblanc Explorer, D&G Light Blue Forever, Versace Oud Noir and the like--pleasant, inoffensive, and providing me with a variety of pleasant smells. I save Polo Green and a couple of other old school frags for Saturdays.
And I don't do niche, other than a bottle of Acqua di Parma, because of the cost, since I can pay much less and yet get frags that I enjoy and that wow me. However, I no longer blind buy, as pleasant scents but that don't wow me, such as my bottles of ADG Profumo and Versace Pour Homme, are nice and inoffensive, but unnecessary since for me they don't have the wow factor.

Interesting topic as usual. I started wearing fragrance quite recently having never really having an interest previously. I lost a close family member and it became something to fill my head up rather than thinking. As I've learned more I've moved towards more artisan types of houses like SweDoft and Beaufort for the smell but also the stories and uniqueness of the scents. I'd say I was located at around 75%. I wear fragrance for me, and as armour, something as a subject of conversation and interest, and still somewhat of a distraction.

A while back I made a comparison between sneakers and fragrances, and I think it's one of the better ideas I've had.
I still think they're a perfect comparison. Most people just want a nice pair of comfortable sneakers, and then you have people that want some overpriced odd looking art shoe.
Both are fine, and I don't think one should act better than the other.
For me, I like nice looking comfortable shoes. Some I like bright and flashy, and some I like simple and classy.
I'll own several pairs of clean white shoes. Sure I only need 1 or 2. But I like them, so I'll buy them.
And while I may prefer a pair of high top Reeboks, or a pair of Air Force Ones, I'm not going to judge the person that wants to spend $300 on some weird futuristic looking Crocs.
The majority of the world doesn't even put much though into their shoes. So we're both in the minority. We need to stop acting like one is "basic" an one is "sophisticated".

I wear fragrance that makes me feel good and that I am excited by or that fascinates me. I think that helps when it comes to pleasing others.
I get negative comments when I wear some jasmine fragrances around my sister (smells like cat pee to her) so I wear other fragrances around her. I love my sister. I get annoyed when my other sister comments on my fragrance. She usually annoys me so I ignore her comments whether positive or negative.
I think there are so many emotional responses to fragrance that are tied to scent and memory, to pleasure and stimulation, to public and private spaces and to trends and tastes that pleasing the many is a losing proposition.

I run up and down the ‘spectrum’ depending on the day or mood or clothing or what my hand fell on.
I agree with you, take your time purchasing it should be a process. I have bought three bottles this year and I may only buy three more and that’s me done for the year, next year I might just get three.

Looking at my journey in retrospect it would be useful. Now I have so many fragrances and samples that I don't go back to. When you find something new you are in "awe". Then you move on to your next "awe" fragrance. I agree 100% on the slowing down.

I think on the spectrum I lie in the Purely Practical category. It’s not that I buy my fragrances purely to appeal to others, but my taste lies in the fragrances that are within this category. To put it simply, I prefer those more mass appealing fragrances. Whether it’s a citrus bomb, freshie, typical blue fragrance, you name it. However, after going about $3k deep into my collection worth of cologne and getting into hard niche fragrances, my preferences now require freshness with a bit more depth. Currently waiting to receive some samples from the Michael Malul Ktoret line and ordered MMASI’s Into to me for him so we shall see how that goes!

Like recently finally got a sample of PDM Layton and was looking forward to buying that about 3 months back but decided to hold off (I got D&G the one luminus night instead knew that was a dead ringer for me ) and now I gotta say I'm glad I did in my opinon Luminous night was better even though the apple note in layton was what drew me to it..initially.
on a side note still end up getting Lacoste red ( WONDERFUL apple fresh woody fougure , very simple but effective ) and have been loving that ever since, I think if it was a little smoother I would say buy Lacoste red over PDM Layton .
eitherway great vid keep telling it like it is.

I enjoy your videos so take this as an interested engagement with the idea you've raised rather than a criticism, but I'm not sure that it makes too much sense to assign individual fragrances to a point on the spectrum you've established here, at least in most cases - what separates practicality from pure aesthetics from a blend of practicality and aesthetics is the mindset of the wearer rather than the fragrance. For example, you've highlighted a Creed fragrance as being a balance of the two. If we break down the reasons why, we might have high cost pushing it away from practicality and approachability pushing it towards practicality. Does this mean that beyond a certain point, approachability limits artistic value? If you wear Creed because you have money to burn and you know it's approachable/prestigious, that same fragrance would belong with the purely practical. If you wear Dior because you love it and you love the craft, it's worn purely as art. Again, approachability shouldn't imply lesser artistic value automatically. I also think restraint in collecting shouldn't solely be the preserve of practical types; limiting yourself to a core collection of 8-12 fragrances with the highest artistic value makes a great deal of sense, particularly if you regularly experiment with samples/decants on top of your core collection. As with anything, there are a handful of giants and a large field of noble failures/enjoyable mediocrities. Just one final thing which you alluded to in the opening remarks, wearability is an intrinsic feature of fragrance, so is approachability in itself a mark of artistic quality? A sign that the artist has captured something in the collective imagination, something about the zeitgeist, etc? See eg Acqua di Gio which is a commercial juggernaut, mass appealing but also captured something of a change in the spirit of the time.

I would argue that I am exactly in the middle-area between blend and purely as art. I have scents that fall into purely practical (Percival, Bohemian Lime), blend (Naxos, Layton, Royal Oud), and purely as art (Enclave, Ouverture, Sultan). I believe that I now have the purely practical foothold needed and as a result I'm not really dipping back into that category for boring stuff - I'm looking for standout-ish stuff that I enjoy. Examples of my recent buys: Gris Charnel, Back to Black, Musk Therapy - I think Musk Therapy is blend: the other two are between blend and purely as art, at least to me.

I'm enjoying my own fragrance journey. As I said before I bought about 9 samples from ScentDecant and tried them all. A couple I didn't like at first, then I tried them with a different body wash and they are good enough that I want to get a bottle. What I found on my own is that I do like wearing fragrances like clothing. I have a few that are similar, but I find myself desiring one over the other on one day and another the next day. So for me having overlap isn't going to be a terrible thing. Now, having said that, I asked someone today about the fragrances I've been wearing. I was told I always smell good, but she did not notice that any of them smelled different. Here's the list of what I've been trying, Versace Eros Flame, Dior Sauvage, Jimmy Choo Man, Gucci Guilty Pour Homme, Coach for Men, Lucky For You, Armani Code and Burberry Touch. Now reading that list, any frag head will say wow, a few of those smell nothing alike. But to the unaware nose they do. To many people, they will not care what the top notes are or the base notes or the dry down. They will not think anything beyond you smell nice. So for me that's fine, but if you are trying to impress people with smell, I think it's important to ask why. I wear fragrances to generally smell nice to others and to specifically smell however my mood suits me at the time. Maybe I don't feel like a freshy with bergamot right now, but I do want a freshy with vetiver. If it were a shirt, maybe no one will notice the difference, they'll think I look good either way, but I'll get that extra boost because I'm wearing the shade I feel like for that day.

I think most people start this journey with the idea of smelling good for the others around them... However... As you get older and this journey continues you really stop caring about that... You don't WANT others to think you stink but at the same time at a certain point in your journey you really don't care what anyone around you thinks anymore... I think a lot of that comes with age and one's personality but I'm at the point that... Yeah... I just really don't care... Again don't get me wrong... I am not going to wear something to a family gathering that is real skanky or something as it would not fit the event but If I enjoy something and I think it fits the function I will wear it even if I don't think others will rave about it... It really just has to work in my head for me to spray it on... (Though if the wife doesn't like something I won't wear that around her because 'Happy Wife = Happy Life' and I have to go home with her... ^_^ ) But to the masses... Sorry in advance if you don't understand the fragrance I chose... It's a shame that you don't because I assure you it's awesome or I would not be wearing it... LOL!!! Fragrance is art and the only type of art that I collect en masse because you will eventually run out of wall space but you can always purchase another cabinet... Great video as always Justin...

Hi Justin. I've been closely following your videos recently particularly when they focus on fragrance collecting from a more serious perspective. I've passed the blend stage and now rapidly heading towards creative fragrances, however I've now applied the brakes until Christmas and have set myself a small budget for a smaller number of predetermined scents which will only be purchased should the right offer come along. The identified fragrances were researched extensively and tend to be more on the artistic side of things. I've had to take a rain check on my spending particularly in the current financial climate with the Bank of England now warning of a major recession here in the UK for the next year at least. Decants may well become my new staple for quite a while and I may have to be even more selective when deciding which are full bottle worthy. I'll also take it as an opportunity to really appreciate and value my existing collection which is no bad thing.

Hear Hear! Decants and samples are so much fun. And in the run up to Christmas I'm going to be taking it easy on the full bottles too. I have a small list of 'predetermined scents' too. Once I buy the first clutch on my list, I'm going to take it easy building the rest. The only fear is that some of them will get discontinued before I get around to buying them. It's happened before! I wonder what's on YOUR list?😊

You hear a lot of terms repeated in the fragcom. Mass appealing, older, seasonal, etc. I am new to this world, but one term that I have heard is true, fragrance journey. You start with cheapies. You could be deterred by some of the, well crap out there. Until you find that scent that kind of blows your mind, changes you perspective on what scent can be. Mine was Dunhill Century. Not a phenomenal scent, but miles away from what I started with. It was then that you realized you didn't want to wear it e every day. It had a ... feel. A vibe. Then I wanted that feel for other situations. Working in the garage. Going to work. Now the hunt expanded. Then you look for the art. There is a time and a place for a flannel shirt. For some wingtip shoes. Some times you can wear a t-shirt and a blazer together. And sometimes, if you look, you can find the frag that not only fits you, but what you are doing. I fit the middle ground. Let's continue the hunt for "ourselves " in the moment.

Justin I’ve been watching your channel for a while and I must say I don’t think your videos should have to come with disclaimers. But then again people get to say what they want on the internet. Anyway I love your Chanel and your topics. For me my collecting hobby started after I had quit smoking. I remember I was smoking in my car on a rainy day and when I had come back in to work one of the woman I work with whom I’m good friends with said jeez Rob you smell homeless. I was really taken back by that statement and within that week I put the cigarette down and started looking at new frags not to smell attractive but rather smell clean because aside having been a smoker I am clean about myself as well as my surroundings. I started with non other than Dior Sauvage. And guess what Dior Sauvage actually works I got way more compliments then when I was chain smoking in my car. Shortly after I started exploring and buying in mass looking for that one scent ( Which will never be ) I’ve bought and sampled hundreds of scents. At first I’d buy things solely because they smell good. It really wasn’t for a few years in ( and after amassing too large of a collection) to finally what I consider my personal Holy grails. I just turned 50 this year. And it took a long time for me to learn that I want to smell my age in the best way possible. As an example I think stuff like Abercrombie and Fitch Fierce smells great but FOR ME I never want to smell like it as It doesn’t match my style or personality or lifestyle for that matter. I also love and have bought very artistic frags that I love and again will never wear. So I’ve come to appreciate them maybe spray my wrist if I’m passing something in the department store or a boutique somewhere but I no longer seek to buy everything I think smells good. I am 50 I work in the medical field I wear scrubs or a lab coat and I can tell you that as great as PDM Herod may smell it doesn’t work on me in that environment. I wear it out but even then I just don’t pull for it because I no longer go out on the town the way I used to. So my message to your viewing audience would be to really analyze what their age lifestyle and career and find the best smelling frags that work for those situations. I now have begun collecting more a genre of scents that work for my lifestyle rather than amassing every smell good that hits the market. Thanks for reading I hope this helps the newbie’s

I just think people should enjoy the hunt more. I suppose it may be easy for me to say as I live in NYC and there are so many places to easily go and check out fragrances. But I think a lot of folks living in smaller towns or who for whatever reason can't access scents, have a wardrobe swelled by blind buys that are nice or just didn't work out or whatever. Stretch out the hunt. Enjoy it. Talk to other people who care about fragrance. Turn that department store salesman into a resource of information. I've found 9/10 of those working fragrance counters genuinely love this hobby and are happy to chat, compare, connect, refer, etc. (also, parenthetically, a "grail" anything is a thing that requires a quest, involves sacrifice, and is one of a kind or extremely rare. A grail fragrance is not one you can order online. imo, of course.)

I'd love to smell this on a man. I'm glad you sample fragrance like I do: you just never know how something will perform when your own skin chemistry is in question. If you can find a sample of Tristizia, try it and then you know you've also given rose a try too. If you prefer drier chypre fragrances, you may like Chypre Siam by Rogue Perfumery. That being said, I'm 53, work nights, and don't date. 😴😴
(I live in Ketchikan, Alaska 🤦🏾‍♂️..🤯)...🤣🤣!!
So, I have to wear whatever makes me happy that day!
And,I'm certainly not going to miss out on a good fragrance because I don't fit a criterion.
So,if something is considered "date night", guess what, me, myself and I are having a "date night".🤷🏾‍♂️
I don't attend anything formal, so, I guess any occasion is black tie.🕴🏾
All I really have to worry about is proper season.

I really want to find a fragrance that suits me at the same time I don't want it to be offensive to others.

What do you consider too many fragrances? Like 25 bottles, 100 etc?

It only pops up if you're watching on the CZcams mobile app, or on your desktop/laptop. If you watch from a browser on your phone, it won't show up.
