$250 To Spend On Fragrance? (10 Beginner & Advanced Suggestions)

  • If you've been watching fragrance videos on CZcams for the past few years, you've probably seen a video trend pertaining to spending $250 on fragrances as a beginner. I even did a video like that a couple years back.
This video is more than that. While I am offering 5 functional and purposeful recommendations to a beginner, I am also addressing the issue of non-beginners letting this hobby get out of hand.
Many of you will disagree, but if you have a growing collection of 20 or more fragrances, you have no need to spend $250 or any large amount of money on multiple bottles (especially ones you haven't smelled yet). Slow down!
You don't need me to tell you how overwhelming it can be when acquiring starts feeling like too much. So also contained in this video is my advice and tips for the more seasoned fragrance enthusiast. If you'd like to avoid, or at least slow, the feeling of remorse and jadedness that can come with acquiring more than you need too quickly, I hope you find this helpful.

Good advice on slowing down purchases. It's just tragic looking at bottles that you know you probably won't even use and you either have noone to gift or are unwilling to do so. I'm glad i got this under control. Reviews are a lot more fun and interesting if you don't feel like you need to buy every single recommendation. You'll start to evolve your understanding of scents without any pressure to purchase.

I have absolutely changed my approach to collecting based on your recommendation. I started off blindly buying cheap and moderately priced designers. I amassed about 40 bottles and it was already starting to feel redundant. I don't know why I was oddly opposed to buying decants and samples. Finally after watching some of your videos I decided to pick a house and by some samples. I started with Chris Collins. Feel in love with Oud Galore and Danse Savage. Now I am taking the slower approach. Buying the samples and decants, testing for a while, than pulling the trigger once I really find the ones I love. Makes it more special to me. Now I need to try and buy the 30ml instead of going for the 100 lol. Baby steps.

I started collecting the end of December of 2021, I now have over 50 fragrances. I went through the phase of wanting everything bc it’s all new and exciting. Bought several cheapies to scratch the itch but now I don’t even wear them lol. Already starting the shedding phase to make room for more high quality fragrances. I appreciate the different phases this hobby brings out. Keeps you searching

Once again, great insight into the [expensive] world of fragrance. As someone who is just diving in, I took a slightly different route...
I've had a few cheap fragrances over the years and just recently realized how much joy smells and fragrances bring to my life, whether it be the kitchen, the world, or people; so I thought I would invest. I probably spent around $250 on discovery sets and decants to get a large variety of cheaper to very expensive fragrances. I think this allowed me to wear them, as you suggested, find out what kind of notes intrigue me vs seduce me vs what I want to smell like. I also went to retail stores to smell how some of the "most popular" scents fair to my nose and skin. All this was to find out and discover my preferences before I jumped in blind to what I've noticed can become a very expensive hobby/addiction.
The fragrance world is vast. There is candles, pillow mists, aroma therapy oils; there is just so much to discover and have fun with, which has been my biggest take away... Have fun with it.

When I first started I said when I got to 20 Fragrances I would stop and then 50 Fragrances I would stop I now have upwards of 150 Fragrances it took me that to learn Quality over Quantity. I try to purchase just one or two Fragrances every two or three months. Stay safe brother and hi to Grace

I definitely agree with the decant recommendation. I now have over 15 frags, and I've started to go down the decant route, picking up a ton of classics and popular newer ones to be able to experience some hyped scents. But since I have my bases covered, I'll only pick up a full bottle of those that truly blow me away.

"do not let the addiction take you under"........solid advice. I'm still looking for that perfect showstopper. The other categories I have covered, and I will supplement them with 5ml decants of things that sound interesting. When I run out of one of those categories I replace it with either the same bottle, or one of the fragrances I've sampled if I like them better. This way i get plenty of variety and never have more than 5 or so full bottles on hand at any one time. I can go with 30ml or 50ml if I want to cycle through faster and try more things.

I love this! I'd air on quality over quantity. As someone who has amassed a decent collection, my purchases only are towards fragrances that I don't have similarly and, ones that I have decants of that I need to get the full bottle of. Great video as always Justin and, thank you for having that list initially too! It's very easy to dive into this hobby but after you have a bottle for every occasion you gotta make sure that your next steps are thought out and not impulsive. Beautiful job my guy!!

I definitely suggest a decant. I haven't bought from every decant house but I believe the decants aren't as strong as the bottles. I smelled them back to back, IDK that's just me. I still got a chance to get an idea of what it smells like.

I definitely agree with a slow build approach. When I started last year, my goal was to get at least 10 fragrances I could have as my regular rotation and add to it over time. Now I have close to 20 bottles plus some samples. Trying and buying could be adventurous but also overwhelming because you get a hundred or so suggestions from YT but taking my time allowed me to develop my taste and with the exception of a few blind purchases I've managed to keep my collection careful and under control.

This is the best way I can explain it. After a certain point of fragrance collecting, I find that a lot of fragrances just seem boring, redundant, and just too ordinary. Now, when I am searching for a new fragrance, I look for ones that speak to me, that invoke something deeper than just “this smells nice I guess”. There’s no need for quantity over quality. Especially, when in the grand scheme of things, you only really have a couple opportunities to wear that particular fragrance anyways. I’d say try to find those fragrances that really speak to you and move you.

Scandal has been on the radar. I got a small collection about 20 or so. I try to pick different choices. Quantity sometimes typically before a season if I want to expand the fragrance per season but usually Quality. Currently saving for Gentle fluidity (your recommendation). I did go low and pick up CDNIM for $26 for something new until then as I ran out of Explorer.

Just found your channel and love the vibe. In regards to this video, as I'm just getting into fragrances and I think you've given great advice. I have a few fragrances I know I love. To find others, I got some samples from ScentDecant and have tried wearing them all day. I found some that I like and a few that I love. So I've built a wish list off of fragrances I'm 99% sure I will enjoy owning. I say 99% because some people say decant samples don't give you the exact mix of a real bottle, but I'm not sure I believe that. Anyways, it's so much fun getting 10 samples for around $30-$40. Since there's so little risk involved, I can take chances on different fragrances or even try more expensive ones

  • @moustachio334
    @moustachio334 Před rokem

I like this approach! Great video for newbies. There are a lot of seemingly redundant fragrances across different designers. Listing the occasion and finding a fragrance for that occasion is excellent advice. The first thing I think of when I smell something new is; what does this remind me of? Do I already own something like this? The next question I ask myself; where does this fit in my schedule? Also solid choice of Euphoria. I love the regular Euphoria as a daily dumb reach office fragrance. It wakes me up in the morning. I've been curious about the flankers. I had a small bottle of D&G The One. It was okay but it wasn't the ambery fragrance I was looking for. The One was just a bit too mellow. I had Eros Red and loved it but it was a bit too sexy for 100 degree heat and 40% humidity. CK on the other hand always strikes a nice balance of everything in their perfumes.

  • @DivineFrag
    @DivineFrag Před 2 lety

Assuming capital is kept constant, I would not do quantity with an existing collection, it's arguably a very bad idea. Simple example: 100ml of Alexandria II is ~500. For the same 500, I can get a 100ml of Ani and a 50ml of Angels Share. However, I could also get 120 mls of all 4: Aoud Vanille, Cedrat Boise, Aoud Lemon Mint, and Instant Crush. To me, it is clear that adding multiple bottles in the lower price bracket is a far worse idea than adding a single bottle at a higher price bracket. The idea is simple: If you have an existing collection, you alraedy have scents filling most functions, so no matter how you slice it, adding 4 Manceras (or whatever other brands you can get 3-5 of) will usually be obsolete. You already have your winter tobacco scent, your summer freshie, your date night scent, your signature, whatever else.

  • @ciganyweaverandherperiwink6293

Your suggestions are terrific, I back you up on all of them as your 'dumb reach cheerleader' ;D. (Hahaah! I've never heard that phrase before and it wouldn't surprise me if you coined it yourself.) Brilliant! Such flair. Great suggestions and ideas. PS= Have you had your jaw dislocated yet by reading 'The Ghost Perfumer?' If you haven't bought it yet, get on it. It's the juiciest thing I've read in months (and if you've seen my bookcases, that's saying something for Little Miss Transgression and her dangerously 'problematic' private library ;D). Amy at Savour Salvage Scent recommended it to me as I may have already told you and she was spot on. I highly recommend it. How on Earth Gabe and his publishers avoided serious entanglement in costly litigation and a demand from Creed to pulp the book is a mystery.

I realized its like buying clothes. When you save a few bucks on a nice "bargain" shirt you feel awesome! Take it home and try it on and its not bad, looks good in the mirror. Then you wear it out and you can't help but notice the fit is kinda off, maybe almost unflattering and now its a weird hue that just doesn't pop. Then its in your closet a few days later and you look at it and you ask yourself why didn't you spend the extra $60, 80, ect on the shirt you know fits perfect, makes you feel great every time you wear it, and you will care for with pride. That was my rational on upgrading my wardrobe and only buying quality but in small amounts. Slowly but surely I got rid of the clothes that just occupied space. Recently I got into fragrances and started blind buying cheapies off hype and noticed a lot of them are ok at best. My opinion now is fragrance is not just "scented water". To me its starting to become just as much a part of my wardrobe as that perfect shirt that I spent months finding and paid top dollar for. I can't go out dressed nice and put together and smell ok at best. I think I will take the latter and go for quality over quantity. Great video.
Don't get me wrong, there are some cheaper scents that are amazing so maybe I'll say in this case, less is more.

It's possible to have both Quality and Quantity. It really depends on my budget though. I desire quality fragrances. I specifically tend to be more propelled towards buying Beast Mode expensive designer fragrances. I don't let this mentality break the bank though. It's all done over a period of time in moderation; which creates a long list to achieve. With that being said and done, you start feeling the need to have them all with very little room to put them all. Therefore, to have them all, I buy decants; but mostly to avoid a blind buy, and you can have both Quantity and Quality by following a list and buying decants all within a budget and done in moderation. Overtime you'll have a collection with little room to put them all.

Since I now already have a collection/wardrobe of fragrances I would say that at this point I am olny going to buy something if its high quality and does something new for me.
Terre D' Hermes EDP - Everyday "Signature" Scent that I reach for in most occasions. (Medium longevity 6-8 hours and comes and goes in waves on my skin)
Dunhill Icon EDP - Favorite Woody Herbal Scent based on a sample I got. (The sample I got smelled better than the full bottle maybe this one takes time to macerate?)
Spicebomb EDT - Date Night Spice (Really love this scent but I do find that it doesnt last very long maybe 4-6 hours or possibly I go nose blind to it)
Versace Eros Parfum - Partytime and sweet date night scent (Beastmode projection and longevity on my skin I can smell it on skin next day)
Acqua Di Gio Profumo - Easy Grab Office/Formal (This fragrance on me is beast mode and lasts forever 8-10 hours !!!)
Versace Man Eau Fraiche EDT - Great long lasting for me hot weather scent for casual weekend outings.
Everything in my collection sort of covers a pretty wide spectrum. I really like Wu Long Cha as a floral but still masculine fragrance from Nishane and am looking for that banger of an Oud/Leather fragrance. I sampled Memo African Leather and that was quite nice.
I have a 9L box that is halfway full of sample cards at this point. So, not sure if I have a real problem or addiction as I have yet to fill up even a shelf with fragrances. :P

Slowing down is correct. I enjoy fragrance as much as the next person, but not at the expense of being unable to keep the lights on. If you have 20 or more bottles of whatever, that should hold you over for quite some time. To be honest, when you factor in seasonal product those alone may take you forward a few years. Thanks again for all you do here.

Justin I have implemented your and Ross’s recommendations to buy decants first. Especially when expanding your palette for niche. In doing so I have saved money and also discovered few fragrances that I’ve felt compelled to buy full bottles of in just a few days of wearing my samples.
One recent sample I’ve splurged on a full bottle of is Marc Antonio Barrios ENCELADE.
    WOW WOW WOW!!!
If you enjoy Ganymede (which I own also) I believe you will thoroughly enjoy this newest release. The rhubarb in this is lovely and the drydown to a creamy masculine vetiver (my favorite note in fragrance) is gorgeous. It really is a phenomenal experience. I can’t wait til you get around to trying that one out.

One more note: before you spend $250 on fragrance, take a look at your wardrobe. I see a lot of expensive niche brands all over CZcams being critically reviewed by guys wearing graphic T's or cargo pants. I remember the first week I wore Issey Miyake Nuit, it made me grab my nice clothes and dress up. So anyone reading this, if you're about to pull the trigger on a fragrance that costs as much as a decent sports coat... Do you own a sports coat? People will prefer to be around a well dressed man that doesn't wear perfume than a man that dresses like a teenager wearing a $300 niche perfume.

Have you ever tried some etat libre d'orange fragrances? I sampled a few of their parfums recently and while the Hermann one was quite a unique synthetic freshie, it wasn't exciting enough for me. I tried You Or Someone Like You and the first few wears were incredible, really fresh mint that smelled just like a mint leaf if you rub it between your fingers with some rose thats obviously synthetic. Very fresh and green but I think my sample is a bit off, it started smelling just like rose and lost the mint aspect. Definetly interesting and great for high heat but I'm not sure what to think of it.
The last one I tried was Fat Electrician and wow.... I hated it when I first tried it. It smelled like burnt rubber? Like when an electrice device breaks. But I wore it a few times and it has become my favorite of the ones I tried. Very dark and sexy imo. Super unique. It's supposed to be a creamy gourmand vetiver and I really really like it. Not sure if I like it enough to buy a full bottle of, but I think you might like it. Difficult to describe if you ask me but you can definetly smell the vetiver, the resins and whats supposed to be the "cream". Totally surprised me after my first try.

Usually, I'm not someone who wants an actual collection. I just want a few scents which I love, but I don't care if I have a fragrance for every situation.
However, there is one fragrance which definitely belongs in every collection in my opinion and it's bleu de chanel. I don't even really like this fragrance. It just smells like smoky showergel to me and I'm not a fan of both scents. BUT this perfume is so good for when I don't want to stand out. I wear it during work, or when I'm together with a group of friends where I don't know some of them well enough. I wear my signature scents the most of course, but I don't want to appeal special in every situation and this is where bleu de chanel is just perfect. Many people recognize it, many find it pleasant, and it's kind of the most casual thing to wear. This is the only fragrance which I consider a must have, even if you are not in love with it

Bleu de Chanel is a waste, totally overhyped and boring. I have the perfume. I get "not bad, not great" feedback from women for it. it is neither mysterious nor interesting. The quality is great, no doubt, but it is outdated. It smells like a high-quality version of a men's blue shower gel DNA or a blue men's deodorant for 2.99 € which people do smell every day for many years.

But please don't wear fragrances for womens reaction. I get dates for being a nice person and not for smelling like nobody else

At the current stage of my fragrance journey, I do hoarde... DECANTS 😅 So if I were so blessed to have 250usd to spend on fragrances, I'd probably spend 1/3 to 1/2 of that towards decants of fragrances that I have carefully researched, select my top picks, then troll a few trusted YT influencers' channels (like Justin's) for reviews, then pull the trigger on two, maybe three bottles... In the event that I don't love them, my local fragrance community is sure to snatch it up if I resell... But that's just me 😅
