Why not drain it first, despite having the leak, I kind of wish you pointed to the drain plug, I want to do mine today, hopefully it's right there. If you see this comment, let me know if it's easy to drain it, and then, yeah, I'm going to fill it. Thanks

Thanks for the comment. I just needed to top off my diff, so no need to drain it. But draining the diff is just as easy as draining your oil. The drain plug is near the bottom, almost directly beneath the fill plug. Good luck with your project 👍

@@KevinNadeau I got it. Was only .85 of a quart on 04 GMC XUV. I wasted a 2nd full quart of good Amsoil severe gear, it was out flowing after one, I couldn't believe the capacity was only 8.5/10ths of a quart. I got it though, thanks for replying 🙏

    Hello Kevin,
I have a 2005 Envoy, 143000 miles. Today was the day for fluid changes in the rear diiff, transfer case and front diff. I started with the rear and it went well. I moved to the transfer case and the top fill plug would not budge. I then moved to the front diff and again the top fill bolt/plug would not budge. Terribly frustrating. I'm thinking of going to my father's house for assistance, he has impact tools. Perhaps an 18mm impact will break that front diff top bolt loose. In your video, in appears that you had no problem at all.

Good luck with the fill plugs. Maybe try spraying some penetrating oil around the outside of the plugs.

To look for the inner differential seal leak - you had to take the splash cover off - or I mean Skid Pad - and can you do that without the car jacked up? thanks

    • @KevinNadeau

@@KevinNadeau thanks - I'm using Lucas mineral oil stop leak on the rack and pinion. I got another drop. The mechanic looked at it yesterday and said - "If it is leaking it's slowed way down." So the location does not look like the inner seal - ending in 17 part number. 60....17 So I took some of the mineral oil steering fluid mix out and put back in pure steering fluid - cuz I'm concerned the pump would get damaged from the mineral oil being too heavy. I had in there almost 3 of the 12 ounce bottles - one of them being the STP stop leak (also mineral oil). Anyway - not worth replacing the whole rack and pinion - a huge job and expensive part. No... I'll just put paper under it to catch the drop leak. At first I thought it was the outer differential seal - and I actually sprayed Permatex Fix All around that area. haha. well - glad you are keeping your car running. I'm gonna go drive up north to harvest from my mushroom farm in the woods. This 04 TB has an awesome engine - I'm using MMO - not sure if that is helping or making it worse. haha. thanks

@@KevinNadeau could you spray that inner axle seal with Permatex Spray Sealant? Otherwise it's a $2100 job at the dealer. "A sprayable sealer that forms a durable rubber barrier that stop leaks in minutes. The wicking action seals hard-to-reach leaks without the need for disassembling or removing parts. Designed specifically to target low pressure leaks in hoses, oil pans, differentials, transmission pans, fluid reservoirs as well as plastic, PVC and metal pipes, their connections and much more!." www.permatex.com/products/adhesives-sealants/sealants/permatex-spray-sealant-leak-repair/ Then just keep refilling the diff fluid if any more leaks out.
