    Gary O’Neil is a manger that does very well when there are no expectations. He joined my club Bournemouth right after a 9-0 loss and the manger mentally nuking the squad. He joined Wolves after the manager dumped all over the club in the wake of fire sales and financial duress. He did the job at Bournemouth, but imho, for the vast majority of the season our limited number of quality players kept us up, not him. As soon as we looked “safe”, we would plummet. We were bottom in March. Our experience of him was that as soon as there were any expectations, he flopped hard.
    He’s doing a fantastic job at Wolves now, admittedly with a better squad but almost conversely, even lower expectations. But it remains to be seen whether he’s merely riding a wave of positive momentum, or whether this is his actual level. You cannot seriously be talking about the most important job in the country being given to a men with less than 2 years of managerial experience. Especially when he hasn’t actually proven himself to be able to exceed the expectations put upon him. That Wolves squad should really be top 10, even without Neves. They haven’t done that well against poorer teams so far; often struggling to look good. I don’t think he’s the right fit for a job where you’re expected to beat those teams that are worse than you. Just my opinion though.

    • @neilr1877
      @neilr1877 Před 2 měsíci +1

      I think you make some valid points but some Bournemouth fans don’t like the fact he’s now doing well which seems strange.
      Bournemouth not only brought in a manager to play the sexy expansive football the owner wanted but have also spent 180m over the last two seasons so after the Wolves fire sale in the summer I don’t really get why Wolves should be finishing higher than Bournemouth, if they do that will be down to O’Neil.

    • @LeeHeighway-jm3om
      @LeeHeighway-jm3om Před 2 měsíci

      What makes you think our squad should be top 10?
      We haven't finished above 10th since 19/20, finishing 13th last season with £140 million worth of extra players.
      I think Bournemouth fans want to make excuses for why GON is doing so well to justify the decision of sacking him

    • @diabeetus_9837
      @diabeetus_9837 Před 2 měsíci

      @@LeeHeighway-jm3om You’re a wolves fan, so I’ll take what you’re saying into account obviously. From the outside looking in, I’ve always felt that your squad was better than recent season’s results suggested. Outside of the top 6, I’d say now West Ham, Brighton, Newcastle have comparable squads to you. Who else though, really? By that metric alone I think your squad is well worth a finish in the top 10 consistently, and challenging for the ECL should be a primary objective. I think players like Kilman, Cunha, Ait Nouri, Neto, Sa are all top half players. That’s just off of the top of my head.
      If you disagree, then that’s completely fair. You’re the one who watches your team week in, week out. I’m aware that you have also lost a lot of players and haven’t signed that many this season. I would never say that O’Neil isn’t doing a good job. For me, I think it’s being slightly overhyped because of how low expectations were, and how unexpansive and negative your managers have been for the last 3-4 years. Even with all financial stuff, I still think your squad should be nowhere near the bottom 6. IMHO. I still think O’Neil is doing a good job.
      As far making excuses, not really. I haven’t criticised O’Neil once. He’s doing well. I actually like him quite a lot. Like I said, you’ll have your actual first hand account which should be more accurate than mine. I’m just stating my opinion that I think your squad should be more or less where it is now as a prerequisite. Please don’t take that as me being critical though, genuinely. He’s done a great job. He’s just not an England manager!

    • @diabeetus_9837
      @diabeetus_9837 Před 2 měsíci

      @@neilr1877 Oh, for sure. There’s a number of our fans that want him to do badly to justify the decision to sack him. It’s also worth remembering that our club was put through the RINGER for that decision though; from neutrals, media, pundits, our own fans lol. A lot of that attitude has come as a kind of push-back against this; a defensiveness.
      I can only be honest with what I saw as a fan of my own club, FYI. O’Neil wasn’t very good. We had the lowest expected points tally, and we were bottom 3 for chances created, possession, shots, goals conceded, goals scored etc. last season. This is down to O’Neil. We were bottom in March. It’s my personal belief that we stayed up due to no shortage of luck, and our key players winning matches with individual moments of quality. If we had performed in a way that matched how well we were being setup, we’d have finished 19th. It’s very lazy of pundits and neutrals to label the sacking as unfair. It was harsh, maybe, but based on how he performed it really wasn’t that strange of a decision.
      Our squad and starting 11 from the start of last season was definitely capable of staying up. Our squad had a lot of the players in it that were from the squad that should never have gone down in the first place. If we’d had a better manager, I think we’d have had a season like Fulham did tbh.
      We have spent a lot of money now, too. However, to be fair, O’Neil was the beneficiary of half of that for half a season, and he had us bottom in March. As well as this, I’d argue that a lot of that money has been used on young players with potential, as opposed to ready-made quality. Iraola has completely transformed us, and we look on course to have our greatest ever season now. And yeah, the football is sexy! It’s great.
      I would never tell you that O’Neil is a bad manager for Wolves, because I’m not the one watching. Conversely, you can’t tell me that he was good for us. You’ll have to take my word for it that he was mostly desperately poor, was very fortunate to get the job in the first place, and was lucky to have kept it for as long as he did AND keep us up. That’s not sour grapes talking, because I’m happy he’s doing well now and I’m much happier with Iraola.
      And like I’ve said in my other reply, even with our spending and your sales, it’s just my opinion that you still have a better squad than ours. I would have expected Wolves to finish above us irrespective of who was in charge. I think you have one of the best squads in the league outside of the top 6. I think it’s a squad that’s been badly mismanaged by negative coaches for a long time. If O’Neil finishes above us, fine. He’ll have done well. I think he’s a better fit for your squad anyway. I think we’d be struggling badly under him if he’d stayed, that’s just my honest opinion. And Iraola is THAT good, that I wouldn’t be surprised if we finished above you 😉

    • @neilr1877
      @neilr1877 Před 2 měsíci

      @@diabeetus_9837 - thanks for the comprehensive reply, you watch your team every week and I so I totally respect your opinion !
      We’ve been pretty lucky with injuries and they are stacking up now so not overly confident about the run in or our fixtures !
      My real hope for the season is getting to Wembley, I’d take that above a top 10 finish !
      I do like watching Bournemouth this season but I think that progress moving forward will be tough with the way football finances work. Teams like Wolves and Bournemouth will always have their best players taken by the top 6 and let’s be honest it’s a lottery with replacing then with young players, some do work but many don’t.
      Again I don’t profess to an expert but when you look at Bournemouths three year net spend of 170m and crowds of 10k you would imagine they’ll need to sell this summer.
      My closing thoughts are I’m not sure fighting to stay up every season is great as a fan with the strength of the top 6, I quite enjoyed the fights at the top of the Championship.
      Good luck for the rest of the season 👍

      While you have a very good manager at Brighton, when he goes you are nothing again,

      We fill our stadium every league game, the reason we didn't against Brighton is because the owners hiked the prices for that match and the fans let it be known that they effed up.
