I have just spent 6 months test driving vehicles each one of the following for an entire weekend on and off-road., Nissan N trek, Mistsi Toby Price and Premium plus, Toyota Rugged x and Rogue, Ford Wild Trak and Wildtrak X, Amarok Ultimate and Dark label. It was tough between the Ford Wildrtraks and Amarok they were my finalists. In the end, the Amarok won for handling as it feels so much tighter on the road, both on bitumen and dirt. When I am hammering home from a long days work it simply feels stuck to the road in a way the others have not been able to capture yet. But what a time to live in we have such a range of 4wd's to choose from now that our parents and grandparents would be loving it. We are spoilt for choice. Merry Christmas.

I own a Ranger Wildtrack, having previously owned an Amarok and I can whole hardheartedly say the Ranger will run circles around the Amarok off road. The Amarok I had was useless off road but lovely to drive on it. It is far too car like for commercial use but does have the provenance of a German brand. The Ranger is a lot more practical for working, feels more rugged and robust, better value for money, cheaper to own, the only down side I have experienced is that the Roll Top cover is rubbish (and an expensive option), it is not water proof and does hinder your load space but otherwise good for keeping your tools out of view. .

Ive had an ultimate 580 for nearly 3 years. It’s had engine issues and little gremlins. However it is similar to driving an expensive European suv. In fact its better in a lot of ways. Extremely quiet on the highway and handles awesome. It absolutely eats the beach and soft sand even with the low profile tyres. One of my staff has a current Wildtrack and it feels like a small truck when being in the passenger seat. Looking forward to the new model next year.

Only suggestions on a 58k vehicle - needs mirrors that retract, and rear air bags and leather seats. Beautiful to drive, can take a huge load. Though if Ford bought a F150 Raptor here I'd think about one. The Aussie modded V8 RAMS are great too, but just that little bit bigger.

After extensively test driving both engined Fords, I just purchased the Amarok. Same colour too. The VW was just so much better on the road. Purchased the Ultimate mainly for the comfort of the drivers seat. Disappointing I then need to pay for a tow bar and ‘Ute lid’ that are standard equipment on the Ford. The Amarok is quite basic in the electronic bells and whistles department. Previous vehicle was a Navara STX 550. I found the 4 cyl Ford engine tiresome to drive and the 5 cyl unrefined in comparison to VW’s V6.

Hi, for me the Ranger is the one i would pick.
    Why?
-Cause i would buy a pickup truck just because i like the style of such a vehicle. I don't care much of the max speed or the acceleration, it's a truck an not a race car.
-In general I like the equipment (interior, functions, safety) of the Ranger more than the Amaroks'
-The Ranger is cheaper then the Amarok and here in Germany you pay less taxes if you have a smaller engine
-And the strongest argument for me, you can get a manual transmission in the Ranger and i would never buy an automatic transmission because it's so boring to drive:)

Great way to finish off. Well done and great review. I've driven both and love the wide planted stance on the Amarok. The engine is in a class of it's own. The Hilux is the best off road but not so on road. The Ranger has the bells and whistles and sells well, it leads the high end 4WD sales. The Amarok has full time 4WD effectively and rear disc brakes and that's a massive safety feature over all of the 2WD utes that only have usable 4WD off road. I'll take full time all wheel drive all-day everyday. Horses for courses as the The Editor said we all can pick what we want.

  • @dperk1757
    @dperk1757 Před 4 lety +3

They are both fantastic vehicles, but for me the Amarok has the edge. The Amarok V6 is more comfortable on and off road, more powerful, has better throttle control off road, larger tray with less wheel arch intrusion into usable space, and by far the better wearing of the two vehicles. Yes, Amarok needs rear airbags, but you also have to consider why the Amarok without rear airbags still has a five start ANCAP rating? There’s good reason for this as airbags are only one part of the safety story. The Ranger would definitely be my second choice though - Amarok 9/10 Ranger 8/10

Deff the vw, how can you compare gold with silver. Yes the ranger has more features and is more up to date though its ford build quality that lets it down. 3 years later all the ranger enthusiasts will be like should have bought the vw. It drives better it holds its value better and its a more solid built ute. Not saying the ranger is bad you just have to way up all options what is cheaper in the long run, maintenance, ease of use, comfort and re sale this all pegs the amarok in front. I think both are great test drove both. Walked out with a amarok based on the above

The engine is a non argument. the Ultimate 580 is a weapon and returns great fuel economy and is more comfortable IMO. If your looking for bells and whistles buy the Ranger but lane departure and radar are for drivers that dose off behind the wheel. However, the lack of a low range was unacceptable and a no go for me. In my opinion, low range capability, both forward and rearward, without overheating and/or damaging something is absolutely mandatory when it comes to trucks in that category. As much as I liked the truck, the all-wheel drive system and not to mention that V6, I was equally surprised how in the world VW could miss out on that very important factor for many buyers.

Look at the real you tube testers and see how Amorok is almost last on the list of 7 dual cabs and the 2nd row seats are VERY squashy compared to the other 7 dual cabs properly tested!
The Ranger is sealed in the tub and no water gets in and u can lock the top so all your stuff is secure..
I could go on but this review is no where near transparent on both vehicles..
If u want a purely luxury and powerful vehicle, Amorok wins but just on those 2 points.. If u want pretty good comfort and power and everything else the Amorok hasn't, Ranger in my opinion through research is a clear winner...
