My Son had a 2016 XLT, used for his land surveying business, 4WD every day on land sub divisions. Had done 300k kms when it was traded for a new Next Gen Ranger. Was completely reliable, just normal service by a local mechanic and two brake overhauls. His new V6 XLT is brilliant, hard to believe it is a Diesel, so quiet.

Common problems belt tensioner, front timing cover leaks, EGR cooler leaks and over heats the engine. Coolant hose rubbed against fuel lines, window motors fail talk about that stuff

There have been 4 of these in my family, all 2012-2013 models and all had some transmission issues. Mine needed the transmission module replaced. Aside from that 220k and still going strong 2012 XLT 3.2 6AT.
I have an early 2015 ranger single cab 3.2 4x4 tray from new. First four years of its life was spent as a farm ute. Grossing 3.3 tonne with all the tools for a farm service vehicle, it has towed farm equipment giving a total gross of 9 tonne around the farm and in high range but never exceeding 70kmh. It now has 210,000 kms on it and has been regularly serviced from day one. It has blown one turbo hose and wore out one old man emu front shocker mount. Its week point is the clutch. You can slip the clutch but generally it will stall before that if its over loaded. The clutch pedal wont return properly some times after towing up hill and getting back into 6th. Paint is still excellent and interior has weathered very well. I look forward to the next 7 years and 200,000 kms.

My 2021 US Ranger XLT has been fine so far. Decent mileage & being 70, I do not drive much past 2 yrs. Loving it.

1988 Ford Ranger STX 4x4 ext cab, 2 inch body lift, 3 inch suspension lift on 33s, 5..0 swap. Lovin It.
Wading depth is good until you have a bull bar. Then it drops significantly to lower than many others, because of the cutting away of the front end they do to fit it. Beware that trap. Snorkels will help, as long as there are no plumbing leaks.
Injectors are supposed to last around 130 000 kms. Many do last longer, but they are around $600 each and there are 5 of them. They cannot be serviced or repaired.
And the biggest bane that Fords always had.... Electrics/electronics. Once they start to play up, start crying. You're going to need a mortgage.
I had a 2017 XLT (last one before DPF's were fitted). Adaptive Cruise Control radar sensor in the front bumper. One knock and it's $3k to fix. System won't work without it. The sensor is $1800, the fitting costs the rest.
Steering sensor was acting up. Can't be fixed, so it's a new steering rack $3k (approx.).
ABS module also acting up $3k again..
Windscreen damage? $3k again, Ford dealer only. I'm talking XLT and up with all the sensor systems revolving around the windscreens.
Then there's all the diagnostic work. Many faults are obscure and only the Ford dealer can read the systems all the way Even then you sometimes have to play the parts swapping game until you hit the right part. Even they can't always pick it first shot. The systems can't often be fully diagnosed by an independent mechanic unless he has the ForScan computer the dealers have. The dealer can spend a lot of time diagnosing, so it can get quite expensive.
I'm not casting aspersions on the dealer mechanics here, the systems are complex and a lot of codes are ambiguous. They don't always get it right either, Then it's another day or more back in the shop.
Mine was becoming a money pit, so I got rid of it before I needed that mortgage.
Hard usage can often carry a lot of undiscovered issues that emerge when you least expect it. They are not as tough as you might think they are. Prior accident history can start the daisy chain rolling out.
I wasn't game to do much off road work. With the existing issues and the engine's delicate reputation, it seemed to be too much of a risk to do it.

@lesfox2010 my injectors went right on 130,000km. Right at Xmas time, had to get them air freighted in.
Cost: $735 x 5 …. Stung!
Other than that I’ve had to replace the battery.
I’ve spent a lot to prevent issues but I’m concerned from a lot I’ve read, similar to your post.
Looking at cruisers, troopys and patrols but as we know they all have problems lol

@@ScottyP79 They have an iffy reputation with the 6 speed boxes too. From memory, the recommended service interval is around the 200k kms mark. By then the vehicle is outside of the manufacturer's interest and warranty claims.
No auto technician would accept that as being right. They reckon 60k intervals is pushing it without fluid changes too.
Got mine serviced at 100k and the fluid was starting to deteriorate to a point where the tech said I would have been having problems pretty soon if I hadn't done it then.
There is a temperature solenoid inside that sets the system into more efficient cooling mode when it reaches a certain temp, but the default trigger temp is usually a bit high. There are aftermarket solenoids available (not too expensive) which have a lower trigger setting and this often helps the box and fluid to last longer.

If you go on the Ranger FB page they all have they do gear boxes and over heat and blowen motors .Temp gauge doesn’t work when you run out of water….Most between 150 to 180 kms..
That's a good thing to know about changing the oil. I'm a Chevy lube tech and the fact that I'm inspecting the vehicle while I change the oil means that there is no oil in the system for longer than 10 minutes

PX1 was called cool white, which looked like a warm tone next to the Px2, which switched to more of a blue tone Arctic white.. That one's a mashup
I've had my 2009 ranger t5 for a long time now and it only ran into a handful of problems, other than that it runs pretty great, just make sure u take really good care of it and it'll last u a long time
Wow, 12 years is impressive. Do you have the auto or manual? Which engine? 3.2? Mileage? Is it cheap to maintain?
'09 is a totally different vehicle, manufactured by Mazda.
I own and drive a base model 2017 Ford Ranger 2.2l super cab, and love it. Regularly driven long distance on dirt roads and some very tough terrain. I used to own a 2005 XLT with a chipped and tuned 4l V6 (185kw on dyno), with all the bells and whistles, chrome rollover bar, bull bar and steps as well as an OME lift kit and after market 17inch rims wrapped in Cooper off road tires (a proper wankermobile in other words). I traded it on my present Ford Ranger which is in fact by far the better ute. It is also a very easy vehicle to service yourself (if you are into that sort of stuff). I would not hesitate to recommend buying this era of Ford Ranger.

Common issues are oil pump failures resulting in seized engines and failed injectors resulting in burnt pistons. I changed my 2014 2.2 engine’s oil pump last year, just in case. The 2.0 Ecoblue engines have had issues with injectors [2019 models mostly] and wet timing belt failures for which in many markets there is a recall and inspection campaign just now. This may be an issue with failing DPF regenerations.
If you are thinking of buying one second hand ring a few independent workshops first , plenty of bcm failures -oil pump failures -transmission failures -front drive shaft cv failures -inter cooler hoses burst resulting in turbo failures-early ones rubbed coolant hoses then cooked -nut on the front of the fuel pump has no key way and comes loose so fuel pressure and add to that most of the drivers seem to drive like flogs
Wow you have just described every failure on every Ute from cruisers to great walls ...... trany failures are common across all makes ya flog because no one puts a decent trani cooling system in those who put an after market bigger oil cooler in don't seem to have the issue ...... wonder why hmmmmm and it seems to be the biggest suggested upgrade to any auto 4x4 vehicle on the market. Yeah um cv joints bit of a problem with everyone who takes there 4x4 off road ...... said everyone......please be realistic

Just brought a second hand Ford Ranger 2018 XLT. I knew going in there may be a few issues. I knew there were a few scratches on it and a couple of dents. So far the only issue I have had is the driver side window button sticks and the panel cover the fuses is missing a clip. Other than that absolutely 💯 loving it.
What did you pay for the 2018 xlt?

I’m in northern Canada. I owned a 2006 4x4 ranger with 4L v6 for 13 years. It was probably the best vehicle I ever owned!
The only commonality between the PX ranger reviewed and your one are the names on the badges, FORD and Ranger. Other than that they are completely different vehicles.
@@Agnemons yes I realize. My son has a 2019 ranger that he’s very happy with, especially the fuel economy. I was just wistfully thinking of my old ranger and all the trips it took me on fishing hunting and camping.... an old man can reminisce 😊
2014 XLT hi-rider here, bought second hand 5 years ago and have never had a problem. Plenty of mates telling me to enjoy my tranny fails... A few of them now drive rangers with zero issues.. Go figure!!
I've got a few mates with them too. Only issue to report is a failed fuel pump at 300k. I'm surprised to see a few of the comments here.
I know what you mean about the lack of mid range power so I've got a TDI tuning box wich gives me better power and MPG.

EGR cooler was a issue and gives symptoms like a blown head gasket but it's a not to bad to fix on the early px rangers.
Egr cooler problems they crack are located behind the engine keep an eye on your coolent level. Also very expensive to replace one .
I hear a lot of talk about the Ranger not taking a standard pallet. Has anyone thought to push the forks in a little and go into the pallet sideways and put the pallet on long ways? Try it...
I drive a 4x4 2017 ranger at work and there good but they have problems ranging in severity. I have a mate whose ranger at 60k blew a gear box and it was used and out of warranty and another mate the gear box shat its self and it cost him well over 10K to fix. Choose your poison the new ones seem a bit more refined and they are great four wheelers and decent towing. Good review mate
Ihave a 2020 ranger tradie 3.2 diesel 6 speed and i love it, just keeps getting better, even my wife loves to drive it so it must be good
Can't speak for the overseas model as the powertrains different but the 2.3/10 speed combination here in the US holds up pretty well
The Mazda designed 2.3 seems to be another one of the tank motors. I have an 03 ranger with the 2.3 and 358k miles and still going like new.

I have a fleet of 12 commercial vehicles in this class and 2 of them in past 5 years have been the ranger. They all live a very easy life and next month I will finally be handing over the fords … to never getting another. They are basically the only vehicles I have had multiple issues with from soft wear to mechanically.
What other utes do you have in the fleet?
@@steveobrien5765 we have had the Hilux Ford Isuzu. The Isuzu has been good as well as the hilux’s. we also have 4 cruiser utes, prado and Sahara, again without issue. Some of these do extended really hard remote work including towing and I would never go in anything other than the Toyota. Will be interesting to see how the new 10 speed 6 goes in the future.
I owned a 2020 XLT and was one of the best cars I have ever owned. Great to drive, on or off road. Put 40,000km on it and only lost $3500 on it. Great truck
Had a 2014 manual ranger with only 160000ks and 6 months into owning it the bearings in the gearbox failed. 2500 to get it fixed. Steered clear of rangers ever since

I watched your comparison review and fell in love with the ranger, i literally went out and bought one the next day! 3.2 wildtrak and i love it..£18k well spent although i've spent another £2k in the 1st year having issues sorted..still love the truck and most of my clients comment on how awesome it is :)

@@deldia EGR Cooler and Adblu heater, had a few sensors changed out and changed the oil pump to a geared version to be on the safe side.

Great review but I would have preferred more on the mechanical issues or common failures. I love the way you go to the local mechanic but there wasn't a lot to take from that. Anyway congrats for the fresh approach, well done..!
If it’s built anything like the older rangers, there’s very little that ever goes wrong, it’s not unusual to get either of the past models of Ford ranger to 250,000miles with minimal mechanical issues
The engines don't really give trouble mechanic is right about the oil change so be careful of that. That 3.2 is a beast of a motor and it drives like a cloud for a ute
It's Achilles heal is the auto transmission the earlier models are not a fan of heat or hard flogging but the updated version after 2015 is a lot more reliable in terms of that. As with any auto trans, an after market transmission cooler will make it bullet proof
I've got several friends that own or have owned these and I have the poverty pack Mazda BT50 tray which is pretty much the same thing. They're all manual versions so there are no auto trans problems amongst these but factory fit clutches are prone to premature failure under heavy use. There is an upgrade available and it's not that expensive to replace the clutch.
I am aware of a fuel pump that failed at 300,000 km. That pretty well wrote off the vehicle as it was $6500 au. to replace it. Aside from that, they have all been serviceable vehicles and have just required normal maintenance.
With the exception of my Mazda, they've all got over 180,000 km on the clock.
EGR goes and from experience you can expect to change the engine… massive issues
@@terryduckworth5105 EGR is generally an issue with all diesel engines from my experience. If you clean your EGR valve every 80 to 100k km it can really save you a lot of headaches down the line

We have 2, well My Wife has a 2014 XLT currently has 165,000 klm and is still pulling like a new one, Mine is the 2020.25 and the only thing i didn't like is that you can't upgrade to the inbuilt Modem.
My XLT ranger goes from Sydney to Bane and back at least twice a year and it only take 3 tanks of diesl for the round trip.
we drive from Blacktown to coffs harbour and still has about 160 klm's to empty, but i don't like to run her low so I fill up.
overall I am glad i chose to get my girl, she runs like a dream, she currently has 43,000Klms and still feels great.

Biggest problem on these post 2015 - 2018 3.2 is the torq converter on the transmission. I am in South Africa and have the 2017 3.2, with 120000km the torq converter packed up, Cost R30000.00 around 3000 Aussie $.
They are full of problems

Ranger of mine 130 k mileage only minor defect on lower pump clutch & compressor clutch. Love ranger from malaysia.

I owned a 3.2 and loved it. But it did have issues. Front crankshaft seal failed, front diff seals failed, transfer case had issues, engine developed a hesitation which Ford couldn't diagnose. I did 30k miles in it and a mixture of on and off road with some towing.
I think the hesitation is the turbo mine does it and that's my next job

I just upgraded from a 2011 pk 2wd to a 2018 px2 4wd and absolutely love it, definitely much more pleasant to drive but only thing I find it lacks is power in the low rpm range. An exhaust and good tune/re map will sort that out though
You’ll find out they are a unreliable POS.
Engines are POS & the auto gearboxes are ABSOLUTELY SHITHOUSE TOO..
Best trucks are the NISSAN PATROL TD42TI coil cab ute, fit a bigger turbo’n intercooler & they haul ass.. They are heaps better than these rangers. & no computers/electronics
& they are Fully made in JAPAN, rangers are made in Thailand on the cheap & crap engineering.
(not the Nissan Patrol with the more modern engine = 💣💥💩)

I've got a xlt model on a 2014 plate and it's awesome. It just feels incredibly strong and well put together. Mine has the enclosed flatbed, which fits my 4 dogs no problem with room to spare. Being separate from the double cab means the inside of the car doesn't smell of wet dog in the winter. I love mine and will upgrade to a newer one in the next couple of years. Great review by the way.👍

I wouldn’t buy a double cab second hand. Toyota, Ford, Isuzu..doesn’t matter. You may find one diamond in the rough on the second hand market, but the majority have been pounded relentlessly over dirt rutted roads at high speed, loaded until their bins begin to crack, ragged out on beaches, dunes, trails or bush by many owners who have little to no idea of how to drive off-road, and generally abused because of the common misconception that these vehicles are “tough”.
I now wish I had never sold my VE Series 2 SSV Sportswagon. No problems ever, great car.

Was it really a work ute? Looks more like, drive to work in the ute. We've used them for forestry work for upto 120k over 4 years. They're rattly and worn out by then.
Yeah mate, the owner works in construction and it's been on job sites since new. He had just replaced the flat tray with this tray but it gets a workout. - AK

Should consider this a Mazda BT50 of the same time period review ?
Bloke at my work had torque converter fall apart in his bt-50. His mechanic diagnosed it over the phone because he's seen so many do it. Was only driven around the city with zero towing.
Good choice for the seiko skx
These are pretty solid trucks and easily my favourite of all 4x4 dual cab utes on the market. The most common issue they had was automatic transmission problems. Easiest solution was preventive maintenance which meant servicing the transmission every 50k, which no one did.
Mk1 PX Rangers had the most issues, ford recalled almost every faulty part we replaced under warranty and generally fixed the issues in MK2.
What about the sagging passenger side suspension??
@@glitched4070 Never head of anyone complaining about that... Only thing related was rarely someone complained that the rear leaf suspension didn't sit flat, so we put in a plus rated leaf on that side.

I have a 2021 3.2 6MT and while I love many things about it they're also a bit overrated if I'm honest.
I have a 2004 Hilux SR5 and have had zero problems.
Yep 100% agree on the motor in standard form it's meh not underwhelming but at the same time not overwhelming its just meh dose the job enough power to get you where you want to go meh ......... best thing you can do to the 3.2 is take to a reputable diesel tuning place and get it tuned safely that is the key here safely tuned, (plug and play kits are a bit of a joke and can damage engine's) but you get the motor from meh to gees that's alright that right there, with no other mods. Deffently put a catch can in though but that's a no brainer on any new 4wd these days.
Some fellows told me that even though they bought it brandnew it was still money pit. Parts and aftermarket service an issue too.

Ford Ranger XLT 4x4 Auto . Steering issues Transmission issues. Ansa motors in Trinidad always gives you the runaround when you complain about issues whilst vehicle is under warranty.
I just watch a CZcams video reviewing a Ranger with over 300k on the OD. They are good reliable utes when serviced regularly
Autos shift like garbage in them. I've had my auto replaced under warranty at 70,000km with very light use in that time. I now change the auto oil every 30-40 thousand kms. Rear main seals are a common fault on them as well. The dreaded EGR coolers can cause catastrophic engine failures due to coolant loss. Also on most of them the wiring that runs over the front timing cover can get damaged due to its placement, so place a bit of rubber chafe tubing as preventative maintenance is good. Apart from that, it tows like a beast and is pretty reliable. Just gotta stay on top of servicing with fuel and oil filters do the gearbox oil every 30,000km and she'll be sweet.

The only thing I Disagree with that you have said is the auto shiffs like garbage my old 2014 Mazda bt Schiff’s Way better than 2021 BT50-, triton and Hilux and the best one I found was the Ranger still with the 3.2 but other than that you hit the nail on the head
2016 XLT rear seatbelt fault caused a fire, luckily nobody in the car but it was written off and it did it to it's self. 3 weeks later and no resolution with manufacture.
when i was looking for a 4x4 late last year 90% of used 4x4s on the market were ford rangers, thats not a good sign people are getting rid of these things faster than people can buy them once they get to around 160,000 kms

For months I.ve been juggling between the VW Amarok and the Ford Ranger, both second hand, both 2012ish, but after seeing this review I.m certainly going for the Ranger!

If you buy one, make sure it has been under sealed or have it under sealed. They aren't sold under sealed in Europe which is not good.
There ist no seal on and inside of the frame anywhere in the world because they hot none in the factory. Every undercoat is done as an extra.
The original T6 is by far the most sexy looking. I have both a 2014 and a 2023 [current] model. The biggest recurring issue I’ve had with my hard worked farm 2014 2.2 auto Limited model has been breaking rear leaf springs. I’ve replaces five in total which means that it is on its seventh spring over its 95,000 miles. The leather on the steering wheel long wore holes but has been covered in a nice aftermarket glove. The faux-leather at the side of the driver’s seat has now cracked badly. The plastic seat side trim just comes away due to our fat arses pressing on it when exiting and I’ve cut it down rather untidily. It’s has two replacement exhaust ‘evaporators’ that inject excess fuel for DPF regeneration but it’s not had any actual DPF or EGR issues. I did change the engine oil lubricating pump inside the sump at 65,000 miles, just in case, because this is a weak point on both 2.2 and 3.2 five cylinder engines.
My px1 2013 made it to 350k .then got hail damaged and written off.. Only issue was intercooler hose.. It was faultless.. The px2 seemed to have more problems.
I worked next to a ford dealer and every week atleast 4-5 rangers be getting towed in. Didnt ask what the problems where but put me off buying one
The thing is that you’ve got to change some parts like the hoses, brake pads, fluids etc based on mileage. Use the best fuel on the market and ford recommended oil for engine health. Have your timing chain kit changed at recommended mileage. Some people insist on leaving them in the engine and that has it’s consequences like engine noise, loss of power. I service before the recommended mileage for good measure. Depending on how dusty the places you drive in are, change your air cleaner accordingly, don’t wait for the service date or mileage. You also get better fuel efficiency and more out of your Ford Ranger. 160,000kms ; Ford Ranger 2.5 XLT from 12th Jan 2013.

@@ageraRable 93,000 miles or 150,000 kms is considered safe with OEM parts. It could be less depending on handling.

All i can say is there a good truck like any other car they do have some issues make shore you keep a eye on your water round 180,000 kilometers very known for the egr to fail an cause it to loose water it done it to my sister's truck an blown a hole through the manifold cost to fix with out labor $3500 definitely keep an eye out happens to every 3.2 hope this helps
Got a 2016 (UK) Wildtrak auto & love it. Only issue so far was the annoying recirculating flap motor noise. I fixed it in 10mins with no parts needed. So far so good.
Mine does this too, would you mind telling how you fixed it though? Ford South Africa's answer is that "all ranger's do it."
Also keen to know a fix for this. That and lacklustre AC are annoying - maybe the same problem?
Has something to do with the AC i guess. Mine has same annoying sound as well, but whenni turned off the AC, the noise is gone.
