You'd think the Taycan should run on nothing but cow farts and windmills, so it would cost 50p to fill the tank and wipe the floor with the old Volvo eh? Well, not so much.

@@usefulrandom1855 Lada by any chance ?.
In December I was forced into taking my old car off the road. The rot had become structural, so would have been expensive. Add in electrical ground and other mechanical systems that were nearing end of life and it just was not viable. It had been my mother's last car. She was 60 when she bought it and had put 200,000 miles on it in 25½ years. I drove it another 8½ years and added another 200,000. The automatic gearbox was original. 35-37mpg on the highway was not too bad for a 1990 Volvo 240DL estate with a bit over 400,000 miles.

There is no way that the government can distinguish between electricity used for car charging and for other uses. There will be a charge and it will be based on mileage which is already recorded at each MOT anyway. EVs will still be cheaper than ICEs when this happens. Those noisy fans Lee and Geoff are the fans that cools the liquid coolant around your traction battery pack keeping the pack cool otherwise the battery pack would be compromised and thermal runaway can start so these fans are extremely important. I believe there is also an inverter fan if your charging via A/C as the inverter onboard your car converts the A/C from the public charger to a DC which is used to charge the traction battery pack so it could be that fan as well.
Aren’t they too close to the front for that?!

The cost per mile is entirely dependent on the cost of fuel and electric.
People must remember that the combustion engine has had decades and decades of refinement and billions of pounds/dollars/Euros throne at it, even the technology in fuel has drastically improved over time with refining. The original model T Ford had about 250 mile range, which by modern standards isn’t that bad! But that car is over a century old!
Electric cars have only started real development in the last 20 years or so. And already we are seeing batteries from Germany and China with realistic ranges of 1000 miles within reach. You’ll see these on the roads within the next decade.
In terms of price of electric, it’ll be anyone’s guess to what it’ll be going forwards. The war in Ukraine is having a massive impact on electric , along with our odd reliance on buying energy in from other countries. In time it is speculated to decrease as more investment into generation technology improves.
There is a reason there are over 800 of these Porsche EV's on Autotrader .....literally can barely give them away .
It is a correct assumption that not only public charging rates will go up, but sadly home rates will rocket and that is particularly sad because rates will also go up significantly for households that do not have vehicles at all.
You dont think Petrol will go up as well?
Neither price increases are happening, home rates SVT have come down again and 75ppkw is motorway service price equivalent. You can charge cheaper and easier out of home when absolutely required. Liquid fuel prices, past 150 again!
it only makes sense to have an EV if you have a solar system with a large house battery and only drive around within a 3 mile radius

100%. I will never suffer from dodgy roadside fast food and range anxiety. Long live my oil burner !!!.
I live in Pennsylvania USA, I work at a CDJR dealership so I follow the EV craze closely as I'm involved. My research is this, a comparable ICE car will cost less to refuel "in the wild" than an EV, if you charge your EV at home it's about the same. If you factor in the extra cost for the charger, plus the extra you pay for insurance, an ICE car is less expensive to run...total cost ICE wins every time.
Your research is either flawed, or US electricity costs are way higher than the UK. A UK EV charged at home will always be cheaper to run than an ICE car (assuming average mileage) even adding in the additional insurance/charger costs. Obviously there’ll be edge cases where the charger cost alone could be more than ICE costs, if for example only driving hundreds of miles a year. For my average of 9000 miles a year, an EV is less than 50% of the cost of running a diesel over the time I usually keep a car (8 years). Just taking into account fuel costs, my normal annual diesel cost will pay for 8 years of charging an EV at home.
Not to mention the equivalent ICE will be worth much more ( brand dependent of course ) than EV in a few short years due to massive depreciation of EV. ICE doesn’t spontaneously combust. If you do have to charge “ in the wild” it’s a matter or mere minutes with ICE its 10 X longer with EV, at least. Petrol pumps just work, charge stations often don’t. ICE doesn’t lose range in cold weather etc etc etc etc. EV buyers are fools given how much negative info is available to them now.
Depreciation 😭
@@kerbsidemotors9249 your point? plenty of second-hand ICE cars for sale in the UK for under £1000 that have depreciated by over 95%. The vast majority of cars depreciate massively whether they’re ICE or EV, unless you buy something like a Porsche 911 GT3 RS.

As for the "in theory" bit, going fast (and this is all relative, I don't mean like driving enthusiast fast) or even simply real world driving needs power and power needs fuel. That fuel use people get upset about sort of links in to the diesel scandal - VW and others didn't really do anything wrong environmentally, they just took a perfectly sound old diesel and made it work to unrealistic regs. The irony with modern diesels is that to keep them running nice you have to rag the tits off them from time to time to clear all the crap out... into the environment!

@@user-mp2kk7qk5g You did well, and I appreciate that in your case the cost was £825, but not all installs are simple and not all chargers are as 'low' in cost as £350. It might be that there is regional variation, I know of two people who had chargers installed locally to me one at a cost of £1400 the other a lot over £3000 (3 phase upgrade included) while checking online gave very similar results. With all this said the install and upkeep cost of home chargers need to be considered in calculations no matter the cost.

Do you not understand how it works? When theres a glut of energy (since it's inefficient to throttle back power stations) they incentivise to buy off the energy, hence the cheap price.
Octopus are trialing a scheme where they buy cheap power store it in EV's and then sell is back to the grid making a profit.
@@markburton8303”do you not understand how it works?” Do you? Clearly not. The smart meter can identify power factor and each device has a signature so it’s entirely possible to identify it from that even if you don’t look at the total wattage consumed by the charger which will be higher than anything else in your house. Add on the fact that chargers are now mandated to have controlling software in them to address maximum grid demand and do you really think they didn’t add in additional code or that the charger can’t be updated to factor that in?
They will have to enter my house with force to install a smart meter 😂
Diesel power forevermore ❤❤❤
Hi from Oz Geoff - Great vid between yourself and Lee. Please keep up the great work enlightening people 👍
All that heat coming from that charger
that's normal. They have to be actively cooled. Those things in itself cost as much as a car.
If there is heat coming from the Charger, this demonstrates a high level of inefficiency in the Charger itself. An ICE vehicle is only about 50% efficient because of the engine heat and Drive Train - which has to be paid for. EVs produce very little heat by comparison, and have a much higher efficiency. Rivers of petrol and diesel are wasted, as millions of cars are stationary in traffic jams, traffic lights, engines idling, which will become more prevalent - as time will tell.
@@peterduxbury927 back in the days, chargers lost up to 50% of the energy.
Modern chargers are more efficient. But even if you reach 99% efficieny, 1% of 350KW is still 3.5KW. That's enough energy for you to cook with several pots on your hob.
@@svr5423 This loss, even at 1% is recoverable, when compared directly to an ICE Vehicle. On any ICE Vehicle, you brake, and all that energy is lost as heat. EVs (at least) do recover those losses in regenerative braking, and increasing the car's range. I prefer to drive mine in neutral, with no regen braking at all. You get up to speed, and the car 'coasts', with no compression of the internal combustion engine to hold you back! It always surprises me just how far you can go - with your foot completely off the accelerator pedal. If I am going downhill, I flick a switch to give the regen. My EV is now 53 years old - a converted VW Super Beetle.
I'm amazed people are figuring it out only now. As soon the EV were pushed to us I've bought a recent second-hand turbo diesel and a 35-year-old petrol city car.
That’s unfortunate because in 5 years that petrol won’t be allowed in any city. 😂😂
@@truebrit3670Who wants to drive into a city no thankyou.
@@tonyrobinson362 then you’re in luck. Towns are next.
The plan is that ICE vehicles won’t be allowed anywhere near any community.
Look it’s a use case scenario. If you’re using a car to go about 100 miles per day, have solar panels and have capacity to install a ev charger then yes this is worth it.
If you’re in a 15th floor flat and have to charge using public chargers then you’re absolutely mad to get a EV.
If you plan to travel 150 plus miles in an EV for holidays then that’s also madness. I want an EV for commuting to work and I have the wife’s Derv for family trips.
Still some way off of ev for all use cases.
Long live my 2003 Peugeot 206. Never ever broken down. Never had a problem 💪💪💪💪💪
Neither my 2005 bimmer 2 liter engine, m47, at current date with a bit over 300k miles, bought with 155k miles, 13 years ago.
It never broke down in 13 years of ownership with normal maintenance and usual other parts that breaks, as I find out on the internet forums. But the engine... never ever break up to 300k miles!
😮
The 850 will out live that ev the engine definitely wil the good old T5 engine
I almost want to ask him to pop the bonnet.
The other difference is if you put 180 miles worth of petrol in a car and leave it parked for 2 months, when you start it up and drive off, it'll give approx 180 miles of distance. If you charge an EV up to 180 miles distance and leave it parked for 2 months, you'll probably need to charge it again.
I don't miss my BMW i4 at all. Drive 4 hours to Luton airport, get on flight, come home, get in car and now I have a V6 petrol I can do it in 1 tank, or a 5 min pop into service station. And, like this, its CHEAPER. (plus, the old CrossFire sounds awesome)
Did I dream that all new properties have to have a separately metered electric vehicle charging point that can be controlled by the utility company to deliver charge at times that do not adversely affect the power grid?! 🤷🏻♂️
You didn't dream it. The government pushed that piece of legislation under the radar when there was another significant bit of corruption being reported on.
It's not significant though because it's trivial to circumvent that smart charger.
That's part of the smartgrid frameworks: giving control to utility companies for what you can or cannot do at home. The french went even ahead and are using that on water heating now. That's why there's a push for smart meters and smart appliances.
@@DanTheCox Yep, no suprise really and it's all part of grid balancing. Buy a battery, be on the right tariff and become part of the solution by buying cheap energy and selling it back when costs are high.
People have a choice as to whether to stick in their lane or look for opportunities elsewhere.

My 2018 diesel vito does 400 mile for the same 100. Fully loaded driving very conservatively
@@chrisktm2010 my 1987 transit has a 2.4L non turbo diesel engine that only produces 68hp. You don't need much fuel to produce such little hp. Your much newer vehicle produces at least double my 68hp if not more and still returns good fuel economy, and that's how it should be because of engine development.
they have trouble when everyone puts the kettle on at half time when everyones watching football so its going to be bad if everyone is charging a car at home
Wilson would rather sit in the dark than admit that lol.
£47 for 170 miles is around 25mpg
So worst case scenario it’s same as equivalent Panamera. Charging at home would be about a third of that on an expensive tariff. 🤔

I don't think I need spoilers on this one...
Lets put it this way. Price Per kwh is almosr exactly 1/10 of price per liter. (Its like 9.87 something)... so.. 75 pence per kwh is the same as 7 pund 50 pence per liter... or... just under £30/gal

Used to be if you parked a lemon car west of Sydney, Australia with $20 behind the visor it would obligingly get torched for you.......
Even though it’s more expensive to run the EV, it’s the depreciation that is far far far worse!!!! EVs only work for rich company car drivers because of tax breaks…… which the rest of us are funding through our taxes 🤬🤬🤬
You can make it work,if you know how you can get a neary new cheap ev!Maybe a 3 years old Smart ev with 8k miles for 11k euros or a 2 year old Twingo ev for 14k euros!

Quentin, well done!
On the topic of future prices I keep saying, unless I've got it drastically wrong, that nearly 90% of total UK energy needs and that isn't just electric , its gas boilers, gas turbines gas cooking, then you have our whole transport system which is part of the costs for all our commodities transporting that's road, air train, shipping, agricultural and building, . At the moment our grid output is just about 10% of our total energy needs. So what will happen when that 90% has to be met by the current (nice pun) generation capacity. It will have to raise its output around 900%. So we are expected to believe that we will all have clean EV's, clean ships. total electric transport everywhere, even agriculture, construction, mining, you name it all powered by the grid which will magically raise its production output 900% by 2035. And how will this magic grid be powered, ah yes fossil fuels so even if this fairy tale came true the electricity will still be powered by fucking fossil fuels!!!!!!!!!!.... We also need to understand that to achieve total electrical bliss every house hold, street, road , pylon and substations will need to be renewed dug up and replaced to meet the 900% extra usage.
Personally I don't t believe the elite globalist think this is even remotely possible and the grid will stay the same but our energy usage will be cut to a trickle via as Obama (globalist stooge) said in 2012 by skyrocketing prices. We will essentially be like battery hens , Confined in walled towns and cities, Walled not to protect us but to keep us in. Finally is C02 is the all powerful temperature driver that the left/globalist nut cases say then we will also freeze into oblivion as the climate grows colder and energy becomes rarer . t least our ancestors could burn wood
