Most people cannot afford to buy into the market at all, and so the idea that people in the market for a Corsa are going to pay 30k plus for it is for the birds.
@@theoutsider6191 Barely anyone did that, 90%+ of all EV's in the UK are company cars/salary sacrifice on 3 or 4 year terms. And a new EV Corsa is in reality £18k BTW, so roughly in line with the higher end ICE models. No-one is paying anywhere near list price for one.
Fair enough. Each to their own. I’ll buy & hold a vehicle. It’s all I’ve known, because I never owned a newish car until a handful of years ago, when we bought a used car at a not daft cash price.

Because they want to completely remove the idea of cars being any kind of investment, or pleasurable experience. They absolutely want consumers to view car ownership as they would any other appliance. Buy it, use it without thinking for 10 years or so, then throw it away, exactly like a fridge.
10 years ago EVs were very early tech but if you look on Autotrader there are lots of >10 year old Model S's for over £20k, BMW i3's for £8-9k, Leafs for £5-6k. Nice residuals for >10 year old cars.
My method. Buy a decent car, that suits your needs for about £1500, use it, repair as appropriate, probably drive about for 5 years or so until it fails majorly. Scrap it and start again. This method never fails and will save you umpteen pounds. Good advice. You're welcome.
The trouble of running an old car is you will spend what you paid for it every year and it will always happen when you are skint and will have to borrow the money. Then you think I'll have to run it for another 6 months and then something else will break! Unless you can fix them yourself don't bother!
I have always done this and saved myself many thousands of pounds. I am very choosy in what I have bought. Has to be well maintained and once bought I maintain them myself and the three cars that we have currently owned for some years have given no real trouble. I keep them in A1 condition. My only enemy is ULEZ with the old diesel car.

A carpark at a Liverpool hospital has just banned EVs while they upgrade their sprinkler system. Why the need to upgrade their system !...what are they expecting is going to happen.
Haven't bought a car mag for over 20 years. Now that they're full of EV crap, even less inclined. Prices are all stratospheric. My theory is that new car buyers only look at the monthly nut (I mean lease) without bothering to check the overall price. They never own it in the end. We live in a truly mad world. Not giving up my 11 year old Mk7 Golf diesel.
No, it's just because the rest of the world are getting equally as fucked in the head as Americans, and we think it is a good idea to have ridiculously big stupid cars.
I was chatting to a Ford van salesman the other day and we got talking about the electric Transit. He said they took one out the other week - an empty one - and he said it only managed to do 120 miles on a full charge. He said if it was loaded you’d be lucky to do 80 miles. Needless to say, they have only sold a handful.
Now imagine if you're a delivery driver, constantly driving through back streets, constantly stopping and starting, I wonder how much range you'd get then.
The Twingo, 1.3 petrol, with manual window winders and analogue speedo (gotta be careful how you say that ;) aircon, cd player, mats, flaps and full tank of petrol should cover it. As for prices of new vehicles the intention (IMHO) is to make buying outright impossible, therefore tieing in to a renting contract term... You will own nothing...
Dear Geoff, the biggest scam behind the auto industry is that it become normalised to go into debt TO BUY A DEPRECIATING ASSET!! Even those that can afford a new car, they'd be much, much better off to buy an old car that runs well, in full and pile the money they would have lost into an appreciating asset class and resist driving around in their ego. I'm sure this type of thing was taught at school in the 60s
The Xiaomi fake Porsche is an extremely dangerous car. Cheap made parts. Even the trailing arms are breaking due to bad manufacturing. And BYD is Burn Your Dreams 😂

I brought a WhatCar magazine yesterday because had time to kill working in a polling station. £6.99 for for the bloody magazine! Never again! And it was all bloody EVs in there too. So, so boring fridges on wheels!
Magazines have become more expensive than books, but they're full of advertising and propaganda. You don't even get inappropriate ads in the back anymore.
I stopped even looking at car magazines because the cars turned to crap with all the electric doodads on them not to mention the electric autos. Too expensive for me! If I can’t fix it, I am not buying it!
Most car reviewer's are promoting EVs because they have been told by vehicle manufacturers that if they don't they won't get any more vehicles to review. 🤷

EV prices are ridiculous, way too expensive, absolute joke. Are the government still wanting their “luxury car tax” on cars over £40K 🤔. Did hear something a few years back.
Luxury car tax started 2021, its additional £410 so £600ish total for 5 years and starts after the first year. “Luxury” cars are now x1, xc40, q3 unless you get the Bobby basic ones. Then you’ll wait 4 to 6 months to get one as they’re knocking out EV’s as the government demands . The price of secondhand cars are reaching stupid levels as sensible people want an ice as it could be their last one and because of low COVID production in 2020-2022 there aren’t many of them to go around. This government has royally fudged the economy and I can’t see the next lot of liars being any better.
I keep hearing that there are many people who are having difficulties putting a roof over their head and there are over two million children in poverty. I find it difficult to understand that the media tout vehicles that cost in excess of £50k and tell us its the norm. Utter madness!
Halfords sold me some new Chinese made tyre, which I did not know at the time. complained that they were noisy at 60 mph and asked for exchange. No reply from them so will not buy there again.
Within the first 6 months they have to prove its fit for purpose. If it’s over £100 make sure you buy on credit card so you get cover on the consumer credit act. Basically if it’s too loud then I’m pretty sure that would class as not fit for purpose and halfrauds would have to prove that it is. Keep on at them. Write them a letter and if they don’t answer take them to court.

I think I made just about the smartest move recently. In September 2023, I bought a 2013 Skoda Superb 2.0TDI SE 4x4 DSG-6 (the 140bhp model) which had one owner, FSH and only 28,500 on the clock. The whole car is in original as new condition. I only paid £8300 for the car, £985 for the cambelt, tensioners, water pump, DSG and Haldex service, and £250 for a full service after that. A remap took it from 135bhp to 176bhp after 11 runs on the 4x4 dyno. 0-60 went from 10.4 seconds, to a staggering 6.9 seconds! There's a 0-60 run video on my channel. It feels more like a 230bhp map. Zero depreciation. This car is a keeper. Easily gives me 45mpg combined and almost 60mpg on the motorway.
I agree. Unfortunately the copy-cat Welsh Government also has it in their manifesto, like the dreaded 20mph limit, so we can expect the same fiasco when it is introduced into law.

We’re in east Kent and agree with you. It’s astonishing but I also don’t recall a few days in a row when it hasn’t rained. Trouble is, we’re all so used to pants weather that it takes a lot to wake us up. I’m sure most people think we’ve just had the wettest winter on record and unfortunately whatever has caused that hasn’t yet faded away. Obviously i don’t think that. It’s so clear that persistent weather modification was started in the second half of 2023 & they’ve not done yet. We’re lucky enough to have a place in southern France. Where it’s exactly the same. Late April to early May is always glorious here. At least for the five years we’ve owned it. A friend here has lived the city all his life. He doesn’t want to believe what we’re sure is happening, but when I asked him how often it was 8-10C, very windy and wet, throwing it down at close to monsoon rainfall, in mid spring season, he said “Never. This is so far from normal weather for my home town that it’s almost as if the seasons have slipped a quarter & it’s late winter.
I spoke with a Tesla 3 owner a few days ago and asked her how she was getting on with costs? She said her insurance had gone up considerably, that a lot of companies wouldn't give her a policy, that no insurers cover the battery - at all - and that the only way she affords the electric for it (and that she bought the EV in the first place) is because her family runs a small business and got grants to discount the purchase price and can claim back the electric bill. I asked her what happens if the battery sets on fire? She said "Well that's a different issue and I have no idea what the insurance firm would say or do..." I asked but what about if the battery goes faulty and needs to be replaced, is she aware that even cheap little EVs like Nissan Leafs and Renault Zoes, a replacement battery is around £20k+ (unless the brand do specific schemes) and a lot of the time, the EVs end up getting written off? She didn't know that. I also asked her about range anxiety and lack of chargers / waiting times at chargers when someone else is using it. She said "Oh, we have a diesel car too, so we use that when we go anywhere." I rest my case.

Unfortunately getting a visa to permit you to stay longer than 90 days is almost impossible. In France, we missed the deadline post Brexit because it had never occurred to us that we might want to stay in our apartment in France for longer than 90 days. Now, even using a French lawyer schooled in the right procedure, we’ve got absolutely nowhere with it. I think it’s an informal policy agreement between Whitehall and the EU Commission not to enable these visas, even though it’s good for their economies to have foreign owners spending their money in their country instead of in their home country or worse, spending it in more distant destinations.
The "proper" Ford Capri was great value for money and was advertised as "The car you always promised yourself" which was a great phrase for a good car. Don't think I have promised myself the new one! Between 1994 - 2005 the Corsa was sold in Australia as the Holden Barina. In its final year before it was replaced as a Daewoo, the base model 1.4 manual sold for AU$13,990 new. £38,000 = AU$72,142. You’d have to be mad to spend that much on a Barina! That kind of money here would get you into a nice 2017 Caprice V8 with money to spare or even a Monaro or HSV.
Who can afford these new cars? Vauxhall corsa's used to be among the cheapest cars you could buy, how can one, be £38000!!!!!? I for one will not be buying a new car ever. In all seriousness, most people assume they’ll can the EVs. I think these car companies have been instructed by WEF to literally bankrupt themselves. That’s what I expect to happen. They had a little rehearsal in 2008.recall in USA when all the giants had to be bailed out by the taxpayer. It won’t rescue them a second time and that’ll end mass production in USA. Same thing in Europe and U.K. We’ll be left with Ferrari, Porsche, Rolls Royce and little else. Everyone will have to lease a Chinese EV or walk. Because they’ll tax or legislate the older vehicles off the road. In 2030, we’ll own nothing and be unhappy.
Geoff, do your research on the Duster before buying. My sister had a 54 plate (I think), turbo blew on it a few week ago, oil spewed everywhere, pretty much knackered, quoted £800 for reconditioned engine + same again for fitting, pushing it close to the value of the car, so not worth sorting. So check if it's a common issue or just bad luck before you consider buying. I'd probably go with the Jazz out of the two.

Most people cannot afford to buy into the market at all, and so the idea that people in the market for a Corsa are going to pay 30k plus for it is for the birds.

Id hardly call a Corsa EV a luxury vehicle, but its so close to that £40K, a person would have to be nuts to pay that for any kind of Corsa.

A remap took it from 135bhp to 176bhp after 11 runs on the 4x4 dyno. 0-60 went from 10.4 seconds, to a staggering 6.9 seconds! There's a 0-60 run video on my channel. It feels more like a 230bhp map.
