  • In this video I show you how we harvest bananas.
Welcome to my channel, Our Tropical Soil, where you can learn how to grow food in the tropics!
Bananas are incredibly abundant and super easy to grow in South Florida. A common way that many people harvest bananas is by cutting the entire rack off of the plant. This is an essential step when your banana plants are very tall and unreachable. However, smaller dwarf banana varieties produce banana racks that are easily within reach. This allows us to harvest the bananas one at a time as they ripen. We also prefer this method because we will have fresh bananas for longer. If you harvest your bananas all at once they will ripen faster. Another benefit of harvesting the bananas one at a time is to give them more time to ripen on the plant. Sometimes we like to harvest our bananas all at once, especially if we find that an animal keeps eating them. However, when we can, we prefer this method.
