    Welcome to my channel, Our Tropical Soil, where you can learn how to grow food in the tropics!
    Raspberries are a delicious fruit that many temperate gardeners get to enjoy. Most raspberry varieties do not do well in tropical climates. However, the Mysore raspberry (Rubus neveus) is a black raspberry variety from India that does well in the heat and humidity. In Florida, this variety fruits in winter and spring. The timing of pruning is different when growing Mysore raspberry in a tropical climate so in this video I teach you how to prune your Mysore raspberry plant.

    Great info, correctly explained. Mysore plants are very hungry plant. In my experience semi shade and fertilizer is a must in south Florida! Your mysore is in need of nutrition or water, yellow leaves are never normal. Check you ph of soil my guess is it 8 ph and plant cant up take nutrients.

      Thank you for the info. The yellow leaves seem to come and go. Sometimes it does better than others. After we mulched it it really got very green.

    By far the most informative video on Mysore Raspberries. My only question is, why wait until late Summer to cut down the old brown canes? Wouldn't it be better to take them down as soon as possible like immediately after harvest?

    Thank you, the tips on side pruning for fruit should help us get more fruit. When I lived in Washington our neighbor grew a lot of raspberries. They used a trellis that looked like a clothesline -- with side cross members and wires out wide. In the spring they would prune off all of the old canes, and take the new canes -- in the middle -- and tie them out to the wires on either side. Then the following year they would cut off all of the tied canes, and repeat the process. They got a lot of berries.

    How much sun does the mysore need? I heard someone say that the fruit taste much better with dappled sun or 3 hours or so of direct sun. What are your thoughts on that?

      Thank you! Yes it was super dry since the soil was uncovered. Thankfully with the mulch we put down the plant is recovering and looking a lot better. Lots of new green growth :)

    We were able to get permission to bury a cane of a Mysore raspberry at our community garden and it rooted and we planted it here. It looks pretty good! But the original plant we got it from just died.... was it the fact we buried a cane and cut it off? It was absolute covered in raspberries but they weren’t harvesting them.

    • @OurTropicalSoil
      @OurTropicalSoil  Před 3 lety +1

      Well that is awesome you got a free plant! I don't think that what you did to propagate the plant caused it to die. Mysore raspberry is normally propagated by burying a tip and then when the tip roots you cut if off and get a new plant. It is also common to cut a cane off at ground level. Maybe the next time its fruiting you can take some berries for yourself haha. You have to harvest them everyday because they need to be at peak ripeness to taste sweet.
