- Watch the spectacle of craziness, crashes and splashes (and a new world record!) in St. Paul, Minnesota, as the Red Bull Flugtag lets people test their, um, flying machines above (and into) the Mississippi River at Harriet Island.

Who would have imagined that a plane design with actual wings would be so successful? Pinnacle of engineering here.
lol true
Who woulda thunk it!? Might be why the airplane industry stuck with that design!
Nowhere near enough speed or drop for even the best designed plane, its stupid

A glider on a tower flew further than 15 dopes pushing a cardboard doghouse? I’m shocked!
Yeah I would love to see this competition but they have an aerospace engineer on each team
Or at least someone who understands the basic principles of flight
You speak like the 15 people were expecting it to work...
dude its just for fun, some take it more serious than others
I had my money on the doghouse
@@wdai03 why would you put your money on the dog house? it will get soaking wet.
I honesty wish more people would try building things that would work instead of just some random thing that plummets directly into the water.
thats the fun part
Yea but I think the fun part still are when the glider at least looks like a freaking buttock whit wings.
i wanna see how far yours flys loser

They had us in the first half, not gonna lie
what was the red car for, lmao
First one had me laughing.
Imagine spending ages on a design then turning up and someone building a plane on top of tilted towers
It was weak. But i guess as long as its within the rules its a smart move if the record was why they were there in the first place.
@@darklordojeda but it doesn't really matter. In flutag distance doesn't matter. None of those other just for fun teams would have won distance either. They're are multiple awards categories they didn't step on anyone's toes except for their direct competition

The only good design about this was that the launch platform is another 20ft higher than everyone else's launch height. If they launched from the platform they would have hit the water. Since they are higher they gain more airspeed from the height difference a bigger low pressure exists under their wing due to more airspeed creating lift, that's why it lifts up into the air only feet away from the water. They should be disqualified from launching from a higher point than all the other competitors. Take the height difference away and they wouldv'e hit the water...
@@737simviator the ramp should be higher by default. it's way too low to gain any airspeed

The rear stabilator was like really full-on. Not only does the whole stabilator move, but it also moves a lot. Making it much more effective and (even more important) it also makes it much quicker control. This is absolutely essential for such low airspeed and flying nearly stalled. The reason they have such a low launching platform is for safety. If there is no limit to height of an extension (and the pilot falls) the pilot may be seriously injured. And there would be a big safety breach of the maximum safe launch height.
Honwstly the glider probably could have gone a little farther with better timing of the stabalizer, granted they had no idea how well it would work anyway.
they used a Wright Bros designed wing also
The best part about this and the soapbox races are, that there are so many people in the world who want to have fun, and don't care if they win or not.
Imagine building the best plane for a while then on the competition day a group comes along with their 7m tower and on top of that about the same design of the "plane" you have. I'd be kinda bummed out :)
I'd be bummed I didn't think of making a 7 metre tower
Mack Teen meter
Oh dear...
_BlackEagles_ Frau it's metre
Come back next year with an 8 meter tower. Than watch the towers get higher and higher until they are ultimately banned from competition.
Should have made the rolling scaffold 300ft high. Surely that's cheating?!?
The reason they have such a low launching platform is for safety. If there is no limit to height of an extension (and the pilot falls) the pilot may be seriously injured. And there would be a big safety breach of the maximum safe launch height.
There is a height limit of 10m in the rules.
TheInkinJapan the other teams knew their “planes” were garbage and decided they’d rather not fall the extra 10m..
Well we've had a fair share of shattered wrists, missing teeth and broken bones in Maribor...
@@headkickko609 was wondering about that!
Yes they used a tower, it wasn't against the rules and they were there to win. The glider itself was well designed and performed well. If you don't like people using the rules to win then make different rules.
Well put
They changed the rules following to no longer allow towers.

How do you hate the drink?? Seems like a weird thing to hate.. I can understand not liking the taste I guess but hate seems pretty odd.
Big chunk of their profit spent on ads and sponsoring events like this. They hold the record
The launching mechanism alone is genius. It had an extra 10 feet of free fall to gain speed
The rules allow for a scaffolding. Lots of people use it though that one was designed very well.

The original idea for this was the international bird man competition at Bognor Regis in West Sussex uk.
Started in 1971, the idea was to take off from the pier in a home made contraption, and fly a certain distance.
The reward I believe was £10,000 if you managed to do the distance
It was achived in 2014 159.4
I was there that day - came home with a headache from laughing so hard. Great fun!

We really took the world we used to know for granted.. :(
Don't worry, we will the next one and the one after that. The beat goes on kiddo! Just dont stay hiding in the basement from a invisible germ..... pro tip: we were always surrounded by germs. Neat.
I like seeing long flights in the event. It shows that they can fly, the B-25 and those that broke the record after it were true gliders.
Red bull stole the concept from a Dutch tv show called "ter land ter zee en in de lucht" (on land at sea and in the air) and that goes back to the early 70's.
There were alot of different challenges like in the air, or glide down a 50 degree slide, cycle over a 3 inch wide plank, and even drving backwards in old banger cars
and alot more fun stuff, and every challenge was a show on it's own and i loved it as a kid.
I do believe a more appropriate name for this would be "The Crash & Splash Contest"!

This all started with the”Birdman of Bognor” event every year! Great fun!
Everybody is talking about the tower but she was the only one putting an actual show there. The rest of the competitors just fell straight into the water which was really boring IMO.
I get your point but all the people at the event disagree with you. They love seeing the goofy contraptions and love being pleasantly surprised when one halfway works. Its not actually "see how far you can fly!" Otherwise a lot of people would have contraptions exactly like the bomber.
She flew that like a boss ! 👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Redbull really is made for sports 😂Their social account is full of sports(not complaining just loving it)
Airplane looking airplanes shall not be allowed in this funny competition.
I love how the teams usually jump off as well!!!
I wish our science projects in school were like this!
Great job on controlling the record breaking aircraft. Bringing the plane from a nose down to level attitude was amazing.
Red Bull is the best company ever!
that's cheating. height should be limited
Jaime F - until someone comes out with a 7 storey launcher
Jaime F But thats not the point of the competition. It isnt to build the tallest extension but to build something that can fly. People just building bigger and bigger extensions would just suck the fun out of the whole competition.
This will not be as big of an issue as it may initially appear to be. Continually increasing the height will not result in better performance. There will be an optimal height when you account for weight and the fact that the force is entirely on the bottom of the structure. Increased height will eventually result in most of the force being lost in rotation. With increased height new challenges will arise such as exerting the force on the center of mass rather then the base of the structure. Physics will naturally limit the height.
Jesse Warkentin if you watch the video the tower leans over the edge. taller height with a lean over the edge extends the plane further distance before it has to performed on its own
Steven R The falling arc of the tower is only beneficial if friction coefficient between the structure and the base is high enough to maintain its position on top of the structure. Otherwise the acceleration of the tower falling will cause the plane to fall off the back. The problem with increasing this friction coefficient is that At this extremity of height the plane will likely not leave contact with the structure as a result of the lack of forward momentum prior to the leaning effect. I do not know the rules however I am doubtful that it would qualify if still on contact with the landing when falling into the water.
If they didn't start with the height, it wouldn't have gone anywhere
Did not expect that to glide like that lol, great design!
"Let's see what they got!"

CZcams never stops surprising me with their recommended section
My concern is at 1:24 someone suddenly jumped off. What if he hits someone that is already in the water lol 😱
Shut up safety sally with your over exaggeration
Thats why u look down lol
Then the guy on the bottom will likely suffer a bruise.
Finally, somebody gets it!! AIR SPEED!!!
So cleaver using the energy of the weight of the falling lower structure to fling the craft to its flying speed. Humans! Cant live without them! Bravo Bravo!
Melbourne Australia have had that sort of crazy thing going on here for about 20 years and the record is about twice that distance

Surely the idea is to entertain by dropping like a stone in fancy dress, not to ACTUALLY fly
no.
Its both. There is both an entertainment aspect and a serious flight aspect.
After pandemic all countries should have this event. Let's bring all out the stress and boredom we experienced during isolation time.
Its incredible how many people spend time building a contraption, planning and creating outfits, choreograph a dance, and have no intention on actually flying anywhere. Most of these people are intent and content with just getting up there and plunging their build into the water below lol
A giant tower with a hang glider on top... Doesn't seem that impressive
Jesus you idiot. This is the exact type of thing that should be allowed. It's a bomber replica with wings like tons of the others. A hang glider is triangular you nitwit.
It's basically impossible otherwise, cos of the ridiculously slow airspeed. And another thing, the rear stabiliser moves a lot and is fairly large, and that contributes to their success too. It's the quick response control of nose attitude combined with the extra height that got them there (just one-or-the-other most probably wouldn't do it).
Know this was four months ago, but I think he literally meant the hang glider that was literally on top of the tower around 1:10.
