Thrills and spills as Cheese Rolling 2023 leads to MULTIPLE injuries in Gloucestershire, UK

- Footage of the annual cheese rolling event in Brockworth, Gloucestershire, this afternoon (May 29). Dozens of thrill seekers from all over the world threw themselves down the steep Cooper’s Hill to chase a wheel of cheese. There were several injuries reported. One senior police officer said last week there was the risk of "mass casualties" if something went wrong. But the quirky event, which has no official organisers, still went ahead.
It sees competitors chase a 7lb (3kg) Double Gloucester down the steep 200-yard drop, many tripping and tumbling as they go.

I do not know what is more terrifying, the trip down the hill, or the rugby players waiting at the bottom prepared to "help" you stop.
HAHA for real they slammed those people.
hahahhaahhahahahhaha. Amazing comment. 😂😂😂
without the catchers we would almost certainly have a fatality every year
Ya that one tackling that was shown twice seemed a little over the top lol
My thoughts, exactly 🤣
In a mad world its refreshing to see something as sensible as this.
Whole families turning up to watch the "fun". Not weird at all.
it's so simple and pure lol
@A.J.B. Smithson Why would their families not be there? Get back to your soy bottle.

Sometimes I feel like the human race has lost all hope. But then I see something like this and I think we're going to be ok.
i second this! :D
White ppl are so accepting of their own self destructive behavior but nobody elses.. 😆
How do you regain hope by seeing people gathered to watch other people fall and potentially hurt themselves?
For a block of cheese?
😅
The reason we didn't get to see the winner of the Woman's race is because she won while unconsious and did not know she won until much later. I love the cheese roll
😂😂😂
I just hope it wasn't a transjen. Keep them out of women's sports.
We didn't get to see a race you mean - The overwhelming majority gently went down on their arses.
That is quality!
Flucking legend. That's a role model for my daughter. 🧀🧀🧀🧀
I love the fact that if you make it to the bottom intact, you get speared like you were a WWE wrestler to add to your troubles. 🤣🤣
That was much less painful than I thought it would be.
Rugby tackle bro 😂
They should put Edge Rhyno and Goldberg at the bottom 😂
Cold winter nights must fly by 😏
Terrible idea
The guy who let Gloucestershire down is a legend lol
And he didn't lets us in Gloucestershire down! Well done for being part of the tradition. Hope it lasts for a few more hundreds of years. We're losing too much of our past as it is.

.... 15-20 years ago, I was skydiving with some mates & one evening after we'd a few beers we decided to play 'beer bungee'.
Someone brought out a bungee cord, tied it to a tree & the objective was to clip the other end onto a parachute container your wearing
( a harness with leg straps, a chest strap & straps over the shoulders -all connecting at the back ).
You'll drink beer while walking forward till you can't -against the bungee tension. Place your beer on the ground so it won't tip over, as the bungee whips you backwards....towards that tree (we dressed it with couch cushions incase anyone hit it). Whoever left their beer standing farthest from the tree wins.
Being in a wheelchair, I needed some assistance, to get pulled forward while I drank beer. The guys After the 1st guy got to the end of his strength, I asked for 3 additional guys to help pull me farther then any beer can there.

The way food prices are going, you could start doing this all over the UK, roll a tin of beans down a hill and watch people chase it

This reminded me of Ibex's rolling down a hill
I'd definitely do it for a tin of beans, they cost a fortune!! 😂😂

I have climbed Coopers Hill from the bottom and remember it being very steep towards the top. The ladies didn't wear jeans for their race back then, it was petticoats and dresses. Congrats to Cooper who won the 2nd race ! He can be found at the 2:37 mark. What's so impressive about his race is that he beat the champion Chris Anderson who has literally won the race 23 times!
Cooper, this is Jerry from Atlanta who was wearing the red UGA rugby shirt. It was nice speaking with you beforehand and I didn't even know you won the race until I watched it later that evening. Nice job!

I have previously been a medic at this and probably will be again, without the catchers we would almost certainly have a fatality every year, we give them some basic training on casualty handling and there are normally at least four medics on the side of the hill, quite often at least two of them are on ropes anchored at the top with a rescue stretcher for rope rescues should the need arise, I have been one of the rope rescue medics plenty of times and we can actually run down on ropes face first or backwards depending upon where the casualty is, if they are towards the bottom we run down face first and climb back up, if they are further up we go down backwards with a lot more control, but if someone needs stretchering from the top they will sometimes get the 'express ride' we can cover the slope on ropes in fifteen seconds at our absolute fastest!
need to teach some of them at the bottom how to soft catch. This they injured a few with dead stop tackles.
We have tried to teach them to soft catch but we only have about three hours to train them and we can't train on coopers hill so we train elsewhere which unfortunately isn't as steep, the guys who have been doing it for a while learn the art of a soft catch but the newer ones haven't learnt that yet and tend to resort to what they normally do, we try to teach them to move backwards as they catch the runner to reduce the impact but that often goes out of the window with adrenaline, we are trialling a few other options for the future!
Would it not be safer to have something really soft for them to land in at the bottom like mattress foam?
No, whatever gets used needs to be able to be moved easily and the problem with mattress foam is you can't really get a good enough grip on memory foam and a spring mattress is a big no no, we have tried a net similar to those found on some ski slopes but there is no where to anchor it safely, the best method so far is a rugby team, but they are meant to sort of jog backwards when they catch the runners to minimise injuries but it is not always possible especially when you consider that you can potentially have thirty people coming down, but if they are unconscious a net is not an option, there is no great option and to be honest I'm surprised we don't have really major injuries every year, but the hospital does tend to put extra staff on in a&e and the major trauma unit for the cheese rolling!
@@cambec Agree entirely - why are they letting stupid people injure them! (Dot)
