It always amazes me how a man as shy and gentle as Jack Nicholson(according to his colleagues and interviews) can become cool, charismatic, neurotic, furious, rebellious, unlikable, closeted, unstable, or downright psychopathic at the drop of a hat.(No one does psychopathic and rebellious quite as well as Ol Grinning Jack.) Plus, I love the immense presence and passion he has, he throws himself head on into every role and controls the screen everytime he's on(his huge presence is often displayed in supporting roles like The Departed and A Few Good Men, where his larger than life characters were the most powerful men in the room.) In mannerisms, in looks, in his skill with insanity, he is apart from every other. One of my favorites, and truly one of the greats.
Totally agre with no 1. Amazing performance by Legendary Nicholson and amazing film, it was nominated for like 9 Academy Awards and won all five major Academy Awards (Best Picture, Actor in Lead Role, Actress in Lead Role, Director, and Screenplay).:)
Let's face it, the biggest reason why we love his Joker is because he's being a bleached version Jack Torrence. After watching Batman 1989, I stopped caring for the caped crusader and went all the way to Team Joker. That movie made me not give a damn about the titular character, ironically.
Jack Nicholson- One of- if not, THE greatest actor of all time... I completely disagree with anyone who says that Jack is the same character in all of his movies. It's just not true. He definitely always has that "Jack charisma"... and that charisma shines through in all of his performances, but he brings so many different things to all of his different performances. > Chinatown- Jake Gittes is a highly intelligent and cynical guy, but he's also got integrity, and he's searching for the truth. > A Few Good Men- Jessup is a guy who is highly intimidating. Highly intelligent. He exudes authority. He commands and demands respect, and he's pissed off that anyone would dare question his actions. > One Flew Over- McMurphy is the exact opposite. He's definitely smart, but he's also the one who is bucking the authority- total anti-establishment. > About Schmidt- Warren Schmidt is a guy who feels like he's wasted a portion of his life. He feels useless. He's sad. He questions whether his life has mattered or impacted anyone. This character has none of Jack's charisma. > Batman- His Joker- insane, volatile, all about the spectacle. > Blood & Wine- Alex Gates is a desperate and dishonest man. His business is failing. His wife and stepson hate him. He's a guy who is scheming for a better life. > As Good As it Gets- Melvin Udall is sometimes TOO honest. He's obsessive compulsive, and at the beginning of the film, he's a pretty big douche, but by the end, you see his compassion, and his humanity. > The Departed- Frank Costello is a brilliant, cunning, devious, sociopath. > Prizzi's Honor- Charlie is a dumb hit-man, but he's also got a heart of gold. > Something's Gotta Give- Harry's a pathological ladies man- smooth, charming, afraid of commitment, and then he meets a woman who is almost his age, and she breaks his heart. > Etc, etc, etc... You could literally go through almost every one of Jack's performance, and if you've really watched them, you can pick something out about the character that is different from anyone else he's ever played. Anyone who says that he's the same character in every film probably hasn't seen very many of his movies, or else they're blind. Jack is definitely one-of-a-kind, and there are a few of his characters who incorporate aspects of his real-life persona. (Somethings Gotta Give, One Flew Over, Terms of Endearment, even Batman). BUT can anyone honestly say that McMurphy is like Nathan Jessup is like Warren Schmidt is like Frank Costello is like Jake Gittes is like the Joker is like Melvin Udall is like Frank Costello is like Freddy Gale is like Charlie Partana is like Bobby Dupea??? NO!!! They're all different. And amazing. And anyone who doesn't see that is insane.
MattAKASchfiftyThree here is my list: #10- Terms of Enderment #9- Batman #8- Easy Rider #7- The Departed #6- Five Easy Pieces #5- About Schmidt #4- A Few Good Men #3- Chinatown #2- The Shinning #1- One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest

Even though Heath Ledger(and maybe soon Jared Leto) is known for making The Joker character reach thru the screen and grabbing the audience by the throat, I still love Jack Nicholson`s Joker just as much! As a matter of fact, it was Nicholson who set the standard for Ledger to follow, even though Heaths was a different breed of Joker, he still knew he had to go all out to compete with Jack`s
+Bill Proud Nicholson's performance was great and did set the standard, but imho Heath Ledger did a so much better job. While Nicholson was still very much Nicholson, Ledger actually became The Joker for that role. While the joker in Batman was oddly funny, the joker in The Dark Knight was just straight up frightening. Another reason why Ledger's joker is better has nothing to do with Nicholson himself: It's that The Dark Knight is simply the better movie, by far. The character of the joker is more interesting, the filming is better, the story is better. In my opinion Heath Ledger's joker is nothing but the best villain in all cinema history, and yes I do know my shit. I studied a good bit of film's history.
+Bill Proud you can't compete with such a talent...Jack always wins...it's in his uniqueness...there's one Jack Nicholson...his joker was excellent...I love him
beflygelt the ideal Joker is a clown who laughs uncontrollably and gets people to laugh along with him even if they hate what is happening. The manical laugh is what makes the Joker. That's what everybody thinks when imagining the character.
It was supposed to be Golden Globe, not Academy Award, for The Departed, sorry about the error. For spotting that error, you win a WatchMojo t-shirt ;)
Jack only plays himself in every movie? Lmao, OK. Jack's an all-time great that's always believable as hell in his roles. Just because he may not do a crazy change in voice/pitch, or something of the likes similar to that, doesn't mean squat.
TheCrunchySopa bogart played bogart jack played jack. Karloff played Karloff and dean played dean. The reason you can’t name one better actor (in America) is that you can’t
Of the movies I watched One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest has the best acting cast in the same film considering the complexity of the characters. Not just Nicholson, but everyone else, including hospital staff and patients, is extraordinary in this film. Dourif, Lloyd, DeVito, Fletcher, Sampson, etc. It's hard to pick the best one.
Jack Nicholson is one of my weird crushes. I'm only 34 so obviously he's way older but his confidence and the way he plays scary/crazy is very attractive to me. no shame I'm weird
I agree One Flew Over The Cuckoos is my favorite movie of all time but his role in the Shining is Top Notch and if I was an actor I would model my career after that performance. Stanley Kubrick was a genius and IMO both greatest director and actor ever made the Juggernaut we know today as The Shining
Well, for the 90s and 80s it is scary, but for me it is not really as scary like the movies now a days. Please go type in youtube : " The grudge" or "The Ringu" its much much scarier....... almost I peed my pants
I liked the Shining, but I don't think it's the best horror movie because it isn't really that scary. Like, I understand that it must have been really mind blowing at the time, because there were no horror movies like it, but I have just watched it recently for the first time and it's not as good as Get Out in terms of horror. Nonetheless it definitely is in my top 5 list of horror movies.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest made me cry like a baby. I wasn't even expecting that. And when I say this movie made me cry, I mean I've been hardened to the point that I can joke around as Mufasa is being killed in Lion King, but Jack's performance makes me cry. Every. Single. Time.
boltxebike17 Yeah, Heath Ledger' went for an almost trailer trash or tramp depiction of the joker which would work better if it was not the joker. I noticed he did copy one thing from Jack Nicholson though, when Ledger was arrested he did the lip thing that we saw in the original.
EarlRegent both are terrific, and im A BIG jack fan. but I like the darker joker from ledger better... Ledger brings some real psyco elements to the character while jack is more cartoony (makes sense)
Marvin Staal Yup, I can live with that assessment but the Nicholson Joker was dark too; a more animated dark though. Ledger's Joker was trashy, but I guess people dig that kind of trashy too hehe!
Good for its time in the 70's. Today it would be just another mediocre box office hit. Just like Gone With the Wind had everyone talking for years about it...today it would be sh*t canned so fast after it came down, it would be an embarrasment.
nobody mentioned the witches of eastwick, that was pretty damn good, he goes from charming to being the devil himself, and only jack could be a suave and cruel, even if cher did some bad acting.
All i can say is that Jack Nicholson is the only one who can portray Jack Torrance. No one else. If anyone else tries in the future? It'd always fall short, really short. Can't outdo him on that one, The Shining.
IMO his best performance is without question 'One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest'. Would have put 'As Good As it Gets' #2, How can anyone omit his Oscar winning role in Prizzi's Honor' or his role in 'Something's Gotta Give'?. But then its hard to pick a Top 10 from such a great body of work. He is great in every role he chooses.
Justin Matthew He has had SO MANY great performances but Cuckoo's Nest has always been a favorite. I though he was hilarious in 'As Good as it Gets'. He is an Hollywood Icon for sure.
Jack Nicholson is one of the best if not THE best actor of all time.
+محمود وحيد thats what imdb says
No disrespect to Brando, De Niro and Pacino, but Jack Nicholson is the greatest out of all actors.
Nicholson is. But Brando and De Niro are close after him :3 Pacino aswell, but not that close ^^
+_Chuy DDL IS ALWAYS OVERLOOKED!
Yea Lewis is a amazing actor ^^ But for me (personal) not so good as nicholson and more
Jack Nicholson: one of the very few actors who make crazy look awesome!
Jack Nicholson is an inspiration for all actors, he is the greatest actor ever.
He's one of the best, there others that may compare with him. Marlon Brando, Daniel Day-Lewis, Al Pacino and Robert de Niro.
Also Mel Gibson Very intense acting style too
Mel Gibson is a racist piece of shit.

You say that, but he's also the guy that went psycho on someone's car with a golf club for cutting him off in traffic.
Woah, when was this? This is quite interesting.
Endless Rios i'd do the same.
the same goes for johnny depp too
+Hassaan Mirza you read my mind, he's a true force
In my opinion he's the best actor of all time!!
What about Anthony Hopkins ? Pretty good if you ask me
My favorites are Jack Nicholson & Clint Eastwood
calm down! that's an overstatement
Al Pacino made unbelievably were in such good films The Godfather saga, Dog Day afternoon, Serpico, Scarface etc.
+john gamer vidz pacino is overrated, although his performance in the godfather is one of the greatest of all time
I don't care what anyone says, when he is on the screen he captivates me.

Director Milos Forman is an all time great.
Yeah, in fact, Jack went to high school with my grandmother before
1 of 3 movies to do so, alongside silence of the lambs
In my opinion Jack Nicholdson and Robert de Niro are the two greatest actors ever.
+ Al Pacino
I do love him too, especially in Scarface.
+ Morgan Freeman
+ Daniel Day Lewis
what about adam sandler?
This is the first time I actually agree with Mojo. Jack is a living legend.
LukeInside you have turned to the dark side....
Totally agree with #1, brilliant film and performance.
I watched hundreds of really really good movies but this is my personal no.1 till today!
I personally prefer him in the shining, but it was a close call!
When I saw the movie two days ago it became in my top 5

peter krug truth
peter krug Fr nearly 2 decades haha. How do you screw they up? Someone needs to go back to math class 😂😂
Jack Nicholson's role in "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest" is the stuff that makes him an acting icon.
I would of made his role in the shining number 1 and 1 flew over the cuckoo nest number 2

His smile is contagious! Such a beautiful smile.
One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest = Definitely the best!
As a fellow Atheist, 5 years later... yep !
ONE OF the best for sure, Cuckoo's Nest was. His performances as characters named Jack were THE best.
I disagree, Chinatown = Definitely the best
I cant choose between The Shining, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, or Five Easy Pieces.
@@certifiedsharter I LIKE HIM VERY MUCH IN THE DEPARTED.

Jack Nicholson did a AWESOME job as the Joker.

Well you are right it is a great movie. However, it isn't as great a movie as One Flew Over the Cuckoos nest, where Nicholson's acting is even better.
