    I really appreciate what Tom Cruise has done for the genres of action and sci-fi, BUT this is the kind of tom I wanna see again. The Tom that makes great dramatic characters building a great tension only through good dialogues

      ​@sodasaintcommentaries4054 But what made the scene such a great character study is that EVERYONE knows that admitting he ordered the code red would sink Jessup...... EXCEPT JESSUP. After the fact, he can't believe he's being charged with a crime. He gave an order, and that's the end of it. Everything else, the cover-up, the trial is all BS to him. Kaffee cottoned onto this and was able to put Jessup in a place where he just wants to say and do what he wants, by ordering him to sit down, by treating him with no redirect, by making him feel stupid by repeating previous testimony, like a child. By then, Jessup's had enough of the crap. He just wants to say what happened and go back to being the boss. Brilliant.

    Colonel Jessup grew tired of having to hide, he was dying to say he ordered the code red and that is that. He felt like he was untouchable. His arrogance came back to bite him.

    One of the greatest courtroom drama scenes in Hollywood cinema. If only Colonel Jessup had stayed silent when the judge said “you don’t have to answer that question” after Tom Cruise’s character baited him into incriminating himself…but then, we’d all be deprived of one of the most riveting scenes by Jack Nicholson ever. 😉

    Fun little tid bit, after the line "The witness is excused, Nicholson no longer has his tie on after having it the entire scene.. Kind of funny they would overlook that. Still one of the best movies of all time.

    Such a great movie with great moments throughout and Kaffe's "You're under arrest, you son of a bitch" was so satisfying. Great cast and so amazing to learn that Wolfgang Bodison (Harold Dawson) wasn't a trained actor before this film. No acting experience and yet Rob Reiner saw something in him before asking him to audition. Bodison's performance is one of the standout performances in the film. He really owns his character 100%.

    Fun Fact: Shooting this scene Nicholson wanted everyone to stay on set while he did the take 3 times, each more emotional then the last....no break in between them either, just a pause, then back to yelling again. Solid actor.

    When Jessup turns away at 5:10, his necktie appears to be missing, or at least so disarranged that the knot is concealed by the collar. A couple of seconds before it was still in place.

      Pretty sure it's Sorkin trying to insinuate anti-Semitic motives where he can find a way to sneak it in. The more normal reaction would be to say it to Galloway, the lawyer most hostile to Jessup and blatantly the least capable combatant in the room, having not yet trained for GI Jane.

    Its king of ironic Jessop continually going on about honour and loyalty, yet he and Kendrick were very much OK with letting Dawson and Downey take the fall for them.
    So much for "loyalty", "honour" and "code". I will bet that Jessop never gave it a second thought

      Save life? What does he think he did? He killed/made kill a fellow soldier... if he wanted to get rid of him, why just not send him in battle in the first row and what has to happen, happens? Then he could have said "😭 The lad was an example of US finest men and defended his country whatever the price to pay. He will be remembered!". Defending one's country hardly means killing their own people, most of all if not in danger. And worst of all, he dragged these other two young soldiers. This is insane!

    The *ONLY* thing that ever confused me about the ending is that Harold told Kaffee earlier that he was willing to accept the outcome regardless (very adamantly, mind you) but then seemed distraught at the outcome when it happened🤔🤔

      Jessup is a Vietnam vet, he genuinely does believe there is a threat from communist Cuba. However for Jessup it is less of a genuine concern for the wellbeing of US citizens and more of a justification for him to be unduly harsh & exploitative with his subordinates without facing consequences.

      Doesn't change anything. That was a different tack by the defense, that Santiago's death was an accident. Jessup's confession proves nothing one way or another in that regard, it only changes the responsibility for the assault. If Jessup ordered the Code Red, maybe his orders led to the rag being poisoned, or the use of an accidentally poisoned rag.

    Sad thing about the ending is the Two Marines so proud to be marines to be a marine you have to dedicate your life to it with honer,
    “Dishonourable discharge that’s the World falling out of a marines arse”
    Many failing foul of this charge, join the Legionaries in France 🇫🇷 were they can achieve once again honer & actually on retirement possibly get the finest retirement in the World
    But let’s not loos sight this is a film (based on a real life event, I don’t know)
    But a very moving film provoking much thought 👍

    It is amazing in the scene how he used his own ego against the colonel by completely suckering him. Getting him to give that blanket statement about people follow orders, or they die, and then sandbag him with then why in the world with Santiago ever need to be transferred?

    Firstly, there is no reason that jessup would say he ordered the code red. Even through questioning, he wouldnt admit it. Secondly, military law states that it is illegal to follow orders you know are illegal. These two marines would have been found guilty of murder whether or not is was ordered by jessup and/or he admitted to it. This movie makes no sense

    Something I just realized about this scene is that Jessup actually killed THREE Marines! If JAG didn't do something to reduce their ruling to an "Other than Honorable Discharge, or a general discharge," Those boys won't be able to find jobs in the civilian world! People, most of you have no idea how harsh of a discharge that is! These two's odds of getting strung out on drugs and either dying from an overdose or in prison went through the roof!-NO ONE WILL HIRE THEM!

      I disagree. If it was me, I just would not include that information on my CV. No one will check, not even sure how you'd check. After you've worked a couple years in a job and done good work, no one will even care if you were dishonorable discharged.

    I don't think a lawyer would be able to call someone a son of a bitch in court like he did and it would be ok... lets not forget the judge yelled you are in contempt! I don't think what the witness said a few seconds later would erase that. His career would be over..

      The key is that it was an unlawful order. If given such an order, they should have refused and called the Inspector General office. Such a thing puts young service members in a very poor position. Either way, their careers would be over.

      They followed an unlawful order. They had the moral and ethical obligation to refuse.
      "I was following orders" is never an excuse. They essentially beat a man to death on Jessup's orders, when they should have refused to begin with.
