The long blonde haired henchman in it is the main guy from the Saw movies too. The Firm has also since spawned like Fargo has its own series. Most people decide that Jack Nicholson is a villain because of his ferocity, but the writing is much more subtle. His speech makes a good point about the gap between civilian and military ideas of honor, and how the two worlds barely understand each other. The military's job is to ensure that civilians never see violence, but they do it by being violent against enemies, and sometimes you don't want to know what they did to make the sausage.

There's one little moment of Cruises performance that always stood out to me on this, and I don't see it talked about much, but right after he gets Jessup to admit the Code Red was his order, Kaffee is in minor shock, and then requests the members be dismissed. While he's doing that he walks away from the bench, literally turning his back on Jessup, but look at how he's holding himself. He's got his right arm like locked, he's kind of hunched a tad, and as he gestures with his left hand, he looks like he's kinda vibrating with excitement. In other words he looks like his adrenaline is pumping like crazy after that exchange and he's doing his damndest to maintain control over his emotions.

50:43 I like the way the “romance” was handled in this movie. I like the idea that, from a writing perspective, it’s not that they needed a love story arc. Danny needed to learn to feel Jo’s empathy and the only way he could do that was to become intimate and vulnerable with her. It’s used as a spring board in his character arc, the closer he becomes with Jo the more empathy he shows towards Dawson and Downy.

    • @bloodymarvelous4790

He wrote his play based on something that happened to his sister. She was a JAG lawyer and sent to Gitmo to investigate a case, and she wondered why she (an inexperienced JAG lawyer) was sent to handle that case. This was the genesis of the play.
When Rob Reiner acquired the rights for the movie, he asked Sorkin to rewrite it for the screen. Sorkin stuck pretty close to his stage play. Then Reiner explained that they weren't limited to stage sets, and they could go to any location he wanted. Sorkin then wrote the whole Gitmo scene with Col. Jessup and the Lt. Col. Markinson scenes.

If you’re Aaron Sorkin fans, you find a criminally short-lived show called Sports Night. I’m not even a sports fan, but that dramedy about an ESPN style sports show always puts me in binge mode once I start watching.

Great reaction guys. Kevin Pollak has some great stories about filming this and bringing his mom to the set who apparently was infatuated with Nicholson. I loved the fact that John knew about his comedy routine. You should definitely watch Indian Summer. It has Pollak and Alan Arkin who just passed. It's a comedy about adults going back to their childhood summer camp.

Man oh man, the last time Tom Cruise did a good performance where you didn't see the acting was "Risky Business" in 1983, lol. You guys are great reactors! It's terrific because you guys know movies so well, obviously! You're just filling in! Very cool! Love that you recognized Christopher Guest. I'm assuming you've seen "This Is Spinal Tap" (which is also directed by Rob Reiner). If not, that should vault to the top of your list....especially since it's only an hour and 20 minutes! And I RELISHED how much you appreciated Jack's performance! You guys are fantastic Jack Nicholson reactors!!! Could you do me a favor? SO MANY of Jack's greatest performances/movies haven't even been reacted to yet! Or if so, very few. So these are all ones to cross of the list: "Easy Rider", "Five Easy Pieces", and "Carnal Knowledge". 1969, 1970 and 1971. These three put him on the map, changed the game, and established three archetypes for his characters. "Carnal Knowledge" is a PERFECT movie, script, acting, directing......not one reaction for it eyt. And you guys would KILL on that one! Going forward, "The Last Detail", "Chinatown" and "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" 1973, 1974, 1975. The first mountaintop. You probably saw them already. Jumping up a bit, you've got "The Shining" (which you must have seen) immediately followed by a COMPLETELY different, brilliant performance in "Reds" and then knocked it out of the park in "Terms Of Endearment" (his second Oscar). Those three movies in order, completely different performances. Then you've got "Prizzi's Honor", an 80s mob comedy directed by John Huston, great one! He's great in "Broadcast News" in a sort of cameo role. And also in "Heartburn" with Meryl Streep. (he also did "Ironweed" with Meryl Streep, though I'm not sure how that one holds up). In the late 90s he did "About Schmidt", one of his last truly great performances. Anyways, whichever of those films you haven't seen yet, pop 'em on the list! There are others as well, but I didn't want to overwhelm you with an even longer listing. Definitely don't sleep on "Carnal Knowledge", on or off the channel!!!!

Apparently Nicholson had to do that monologue a dozen or more times because they had to do close-up’s, mid-range shots, and shots with the entire courtroom. Even then, every time he did it with the same passion and intensity that Reiner told him “Jack, save some for the other takes!” Nicholson looked at him and just said “Carl, I just love to act.” and kept doing it.
