      I don't think so he was nominated for an Oscar as well... best supporting actor, and everyone likes him his name just never got superstar reaction to it. But I've never heard anyone say anything other than "yeah he's great in everything" or something similar. He just happened to be with 1 of the greatest screen legends of all time who finally got his Oscar after many worthy performances already.

    This was an experience in the theaters. You gotta remember that up to this point we’d never seen Denzel be a real bad guy. It was SHOCKING. My theater gasped when he shot Scott Glenn’s character. No one was expecting it. That’s when the movie turned and you realized that Denzel was on a whole other level here. Fucking brilliant.

    • @CHBee619
      @CHBee619 Před 9 měsíci +9

      It was an experience indeed. It came out almost a month after 9/11. This was my first time back in a theatre after being in a post 9/11 haze of constant news cycles being on at home all day long, and needing a break from our reality. I’m sure alot of people in that theatre felt the same way. It was easy to immerse yourself in this movie. I loved the Alonzo character so much that I knew I would name my future son, Alonzo. My kid loves this movie too and loves his name.

      I wish I saw this movie in theaters. I was a kid and remember my cousins renting it like it was a big thing. I also remember seeing Denzel on all the buses, The Training Day poster was everywhere, of course I had no idea who he was. Just wondered why this guy with a durag was everywhere

    • @larsickenroth7169
      @larsickenroth7169 Před 12 dny

      Had the exact same experience: with many other actors this might have worked, but not to this grade. Denzel is someone well-respected and with so much gravitas: I remember seeing this in cinema and continuously weighing in my head whether this was a smart cop knowing how to position himself to be effective, or just a bent one. It’s almost like you don’t want him to be a bad guy in the end. At the same time: Ethan Hawke is an actor with just as much presence yet known for a varied history of roles. Which results in: you’re continuously thinking along with him and experiencing the movie literally as a ride-along.
      I forgot about the end part, but it’s kind of brilliant how - even when pushed into a bad situation with the drugs - Ethan’s character’s moral build is his central drive: he just jumps inbetween because he must. And that is actually what saves him in the end.
      Yeah, brilliant piece of movie history by now, and actually very rewatchable!

      I've always maintained that! They especially in what was it 92 or 4? Would give that an *OSCAR, but that definitely should've been won! In fact, of his nominated roles I would put this as the 1 LEAST worthy of the win(and that's also in perspective of the greatness of Denzel obviously he's a GOAT and doesn't do bad performances this is still better than most any performance we get on a regular basis.) Hurricane, Flight, Fences were master performances where he became something so far apart from himself it's amazing! Alonzo was basically Denzel with that Denzel swag we love so much that he portrays in most of his roles except this time he was the "bad guy" which was the 1st time in his career at this point.
      Malcom X was no Denzel at all he became Malcom even down to small mannerisms worst thing is the winner that year was Pacino for Scent Of A Woman and I love him and that film HOWEVER!!! It was a lifetime achievement/makeup win. It's never named in his top 5 maybe even 10 performances definitely not the top of his nominated roles: Godfather 1, 2, Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico, And Justice For All, Glengarry Glenn Ross all more worthy and probably likely to be named before what he actually won for.
      He should've been won for Godfather hands down his 1st few nominations he lost to? Those characters/movies aren't hardly talked about let alone performances still lauded like Godfather and his others. The academy knew they screwed him over for literal decades by that point and he deserved one, so their best opportunity to make that up to him and not let Malcom X win was let Pacino win for Scent Of A Woman.

      @Shawn-id7gc Před 10 měsíci +1

      Yes. If you did a 1v1 matchup should have won over Pacino's over the top in Scent of the Woman (I still like his performance tho).
      I think his performance in 1999 Hurricane was his best but lost to Spacey. This was a time where the Oscars sort of give Oscars cause they were jilted previously. Russell Crowe for Gladiator when he could have won in 1999 also. Yes, I think Denzel got this one possibly over Russell(?).

  • @swacfan100
    @swacfan100 Před 9 měsíci +5

    I love how Denzel and Antwan Fuqua described Denzel's character. That at one point he was most likely Jake, but overtime , the job swallowed him up. That he saw the only way to get justice was to bend the law, ambut in his bending he eventually breaks it.
    He eventually becomes one of the wolves he's supposed to take down. When the rhugs on the streets dont like or see you as No Good, you are lost. He has power, but even though he's not at the top of that power, he's arrogant and ruthless because he's close to those in power.
    He's able to abuse the power he has, only over the powerless. He hasn't arrested anyone, even had a rookie cop set to be killed. He's completely given up. As the drug dealer they robbed told Jake " You're completely like he was....".
    As Denzel said, "he had to die in the end", "wages of sin is death". No way he can do the thing's he's done for who knows how long and continue to live.

I can still remember seeing this back in 2001 the day for the first time. Maybe I just hold Denzel to a different standard that it was impossible not to see this when it first premiered. He’s literally one of the best actors of all time in my opinion. I just don’t see how someone could wait of 2 decades to watch this at there age lol This one of these films I know word for word I’ve seen it countless times. It’s more so Denzel performance than the writing. Also Ethan Hawke this was the first film that comes to mind everytime I see his face because it’s so iconic. Older than you guys. I'm going to switch to Italian for awhile because I may be going to Italy for ten days in May and I want to be prepared. Learning languages is fun. I know only a tiny bit of Italian due to being a musician. Antoine Fugua directed "Training Day". This is the first time I've seen it since the first time I watched it a little over 20 years ago. It's always fun to see how long it takes people to realize he's just a bad cop. Nothing else. We've been conditioned to be on the side of the rogue cop that doesn't play by the rules. I love this movie because they took Denzel's sterling career and reputation and used it against the audience. He's charming, handsome, a cop, and smart but he's very plainly the bad guy.

    Thing is with David Ayer is people seem to judge him on Suicide Squad alone and that's not fair, via studio interference. But the reason that his crime, cop-based movies were so good, is that he used be in the Navy I believe and worked with that world and you can clearly his tactical awareness with actors is so pin point. You look at the street-level realness in The first Fast and Furious which he contributed with a draft, Training Day, End of Watch, Sabotage, Harsh Times and SWAT, which are such good movies. Obviously, with Denzel, Hawke and Faqua Training day is on another level. I mean, i thought Ethan Hawke shouldve got his Oscar long with Denzel, as both were so, so good. Another Denzel film which is my fav is Glory. Such a good film and performance.
    And you if you look at a Ayer and lot of his films, like when he directed Street Kings, a movie I love. Loved the Keanu and Chris Evans partnership in it. He uses a lot of actors he's used in multiple films. Hector from F & F is in Training Day. The guy that let Jake pass to get to Alonso is in End of Watch and other Ayer protects. Terry Crews Training Day and Street Kings.
