I just got this unit as a live-streaming camera and now find myself doing some regular content due to its "class-leading" video specs. Top notch content GL
Thank you for a video! all the comparisons, really helpful!
You're welcome!
I agree. I’d rather get the A6100 and a Zhiyun M2 Gimbal.
I just came back to this video after watching other videos on the same topic to say thanks! Great to the point video!
Does the A6100 do clean HDMI out with autofocus on? Thank you.
Not sure, but i'll try to check fr my final review.
Gordon Laing Thank you. Just looking to pick up this camera specifically for live streaming.
@@PeakTimeRacing Super late reply but yes. Every sony a6xxx has autofocus using hdmi out. I use my 6100 for streaming after returning my 6000 (I wanted to have 4k)
Great video Gordon! So many cameras to choose from.
Thanks!
I heard that they lock some features like setting iso range on lower model. Is this true?
Does a6100 has motorized zoom on kit lenses with onbody control (for video purpose)?
Hello, sir. I wanna know your choice between Fujifilm xt30 and A6100? Or could you make a video later? Thanks for reply
Neither if you ask me, have you checked the prices of their respective lens ecosystems? Canon will Outlast them all unless they figure out their lens pricing...
On the off chance you see this, what camera did you use to shoot this video? :) ps very helpful videos, thanks
I used the Sony A6400 for filming most of my videos.
Would u get this or a RX100 VA? Thanks for sharing this I’ve been looking for my first mirrorless or first pocket cam for vlogging ❤️😭
Hmmm, good question... depends if you need something that fits in your pocket. if not, then the A6100 kit plus a microphone would be a great combo. Plus it'll record for longer.
Very informative Gordon, I’m trying to decide between the a6100 or the new Canon M6 Mark ii. Since you are the only person have used both, Can both shoot handheld video if i remain standing still? Just need stable footage of landscapes and maybe some panning
Yes both can do that, but ideally when using lenses with IS,
Canon if you have ef lenses already or you don't have any grim on buying used ef lens. Man, there are tons of them and affordable as well.
Great querks and features!
Now in March 2020 (it is Feb 29 when I am commenting), A6100 is being sold 600 Body, 700 w/ Kit lens. Where A6400 is still being sold for 850 to 900 USD for the body alone.
A must buy for people who will work with stock footage and minimal color grade.
agreed,,,,a6100 is a great deal now
Does the 6100 have decent electronic shutter (100% non-mechanical) mode? this would be a major difference over the failure-prone a6000 mechanical shutter
Awesome as expected from you sir! BTW, Can you test the a6100 unlimited recording/overheating test on your final review? Thank you!
I will indeed - I suspect it may not be as long as the A6400 in 4k due to its different body material, but hopefully still more than half an hour!
@@cameralabs Cool! Ill wait for this before deciding whether to buy a6100 or a6400.
Gordon Laing are there any picture profiles included in this camera? Does it have HLG? Cine2?
@@dukebozikowski3801 no HLG or S-Log, but I'm not sure about other profiles, I'll check.
@@cameralabs Well does it have cine profile?
Hi, Gordon two questions.
1. Does it have electronic stabilization?
2. Does it overheat? or say the average video length that it can record before shutting down due to overheating.
Don’t think it has electronic stabilization, but if It has the same hardware as the a6400 I’ve seen people record over an hour of video with it
@@cj64films Thanks.
May I ask if the a6100 has the same powerful autofocus system that the a6400 has? and can I use it in video shooting too?
It has the exact same as the A6400, the A6600 supports eye auto-focus in video.
what @sideshowBoB44 said - same AF as the A6400.
@@cameralabs sir.. so if I am a youtuber and I shoot myself in my videos talking to the camera indoor, on tripod without any camera movements.. similar to your video here.. would you recommend the a6100 for me over the a6400? And how about the slog3? Is not having slog3 on the a6100 will effect my videos quality in this case?
@@mexps8093 I never use S-log because I don't feel the need to grade the footage, so it depends if you do. I would say if you are using a tripod, mostly using the screen and don't need to grade, then YES, get the A6100! PS - if you saver any money, treat yourself to my book!
@@cameralabs Thanks alot
Hey Gordon, What lens do you recommend with the Sony A6100. Should I just get the body and buy lens separately or is the kit lens 16-50mm & E 55-210 mm package a good place to start. Thanks.
P.S. I’m looking to buy a regular + basic telephoto lens initially.
I don't like the 16-50, so would recommend the 18-135.
Gordon Laing Thanks a lot.
I am confused between nikon d5600 or sonya6000. I am buying 1st time camera . Plzz suggest me which one is best in today's date
Plzzz reply
honestly i was looking for a camera to record and to get on black friday and this is what i was looking for, thank you it was very helpful!
You're welcome!
I'm looking to upgrade from EM5 Mk2 to a more video-oriented body, but want to keep the small form factor. If the pending Mk3 doesn't kill it with the 4k and AF, I'm seriously looking at jumping systems to a Sony A6400. APS-C vs MFT sensor. Amazing 4k and AF. Even smaller body. Am I misguided?
Is that better than m50 in Fhd ?
In terms of image quality , which one would you recommend ? A6100 or A6400?
They have identical processors and sensors and autofocus.
They have identical photo and video quality!
Gordon Laing thank you and Aoi for the reply !
They are, identical, except the A6400 has a higher material body, more picture profiles, a better EVF, and it’s only a bit more money. I am still shaking my head at the pricing here. This should be $200-300 cheaper than the A6400. It’s way to close in price.
Still no upgrade news for the a6500? I really want real time auto eye focus but I don't want another camera, I already have 3! A6000, a6300 and a6500, enough already haha!
Thanks for the info. I see the a6100 menu where 120fps comes in 2 bit rates 100mbps and 60mbps. It will be interesting to see some tests with 120fps 100mbps and focus tracking.
it's the same as the A6400 in that regard.
@@cameralabs Thanks Gordon
Any solution problem overheat for model A6100 & 6600 ???
Not sure about A6100, but A6600 doesn't overheat.
@@cameralabs hope same for model 6100 because my 6000 problem overheat isue
@@TheMRZVlogs I have the A6000 too and you're right. These newer ones are MUCH improved.
Thanks Gordon. I think the A6400 is the best buy in the Sony APSC line. 150 more is worth it for the better weather resistant body for outdoors content creator. I am disappointed in both of the new cameras.
i think the main deal breaker for 150usd will be the HLG function which cannot be upgraded later on.
Absolutely agree, and just got my a6400 right after the announcement
I'm confused the video I watched another guy say that the a6100 has a record limit of 30 minutes before it shuts off and you said it records for longer how longer I'm confused .......
Me too lol
Great and detailed review sir! I think the A6100 is a camera that is great for vloggers who doesnt need to color grade plus it is super light and affordable! That extra cash left, you can get better lens! Sony did a great job on the A6100.
On the A6600 on the other hand, the downside is the price though, I would pick the A7iii over. 😄
I agree.
Yeah the IBIS is basically nonexistent so waste of money over the other models
I was set to go with the a6100 until I saw that it used the a6000 body instead of the a6400 body (which makes sense, given it's an a6000 replacement, but still). I don't shoot much video, so the picture profiles don't bother me, but I would prefer the updated body. So now I'm back to being undecided.
If you don’t do video. Then get Canon
I am deciding between the a6400 or the rx100 mark vii. For portable photography and videos family pictures and stuff.
I've had an A6000 since it came out years ago, body has been fine, tough as old boots. Save your money, get the A6100 and put the change towards a Sigma 16mm F1.4
A6300. You really don't need the eye autofocus of the newer cameras
For photos, the a6400's better viewfinder and bigger buffer are probably worth the $150 over the a6100.
I bought 2 A6100s and the 16-55 to replace my A6300 and A7ii. Autofocus is such a game changer, the continuous eye AF is a huge feature upgrade. One big con that does not get mention is the slow shutter speed in P and A modes with Auto ISO. The A6100 in interiors tend to pick 1/30 shutter speeds while keeping the ISO at 100 / 200. It drives me crazy, as P and A modes are what i like to use for street photography when you can transition from full sun to darkness quickly. The A6400 has the minimum shutter speed Auto ISO setting, stripped from the A6100. Yet the A6000 in Auto ISO picks faster shutter speeds and bumps up the ISO, which to me makes more sense. If i want to use slow shutter speeds in the dark, i'd more likely use M, and P, A for more dynamic, unpredictable situations. Now the A6100 is 40% cheaper than the A6400. I was going to get the A6400, if price difference would have been 150 USD, but otherwise I think it's a great buy. I don't use picture profiles for video, but turning down contrast and saturation at -3 produces a pretty flat image with good dynamic range.
interior, shadow, apsc in general struggle in low light I did a test video recently comparing apsc & full frame --=-=-=-a6000 is horrible
the best budget camera with a selfie LCD
Today is the release day in Europe of the a6100 and the prices here are not what I expected so don't be fooled! In some stores in Germany the a6100 with the kit lens costs 999 euros and the a6400 that is a better camera overall costs 989 euros . Sony "new" messy naming scheme is trying to catch less informed costumers. Thank you for your review and vs it's very helpful!
Please Mr Gordon test the 1080p quality of the a6100 AND we would love to see a comparison with the M6 Mark II. Yes, the M6 mark 2 might seem better at first glance but the a6100 I think has AF in 120fps and it can be powered with via USB. If the price difference is not much, the a6100 might be a better buy.
I will try!
It's the successor of the A5100.
I just unboxed my a6000 and it looks basically identical to the a6100 in this video, down to the button placement and shiny case. Honestly think they are phoning it in and don't care about their crop sensor cameras anymore. People talk about Canon neglecting their ef-m line but sony isn't much better. Still no a7000 after so many years. Putting a microphone jack necessitates a new release. Addition of mediocre IBIS, new release. 4k that doesn't overheat, yet another new release. Still can't believe they are still using dots to measure resolution (I guess some consumers are still dumb enough to fail for the spec, like dynamic contrast on TVs.) A $50 smartphone is higher res and brighter than the LCD here. And the EVF you put so close to your eye being only SVGA...
Sigma FP says - hello entry lvl friend!
Nice Gordon! Godox, this is the propitious moment. Release your professional APSC camera, NOW!
Is EVF of a6100 clear enough for manual focus?
It is on the A6000, so it will be. I manual focus my adapted Nikkor AIS lenses on my A6000, works a treat especially with the zoom in to focus on a custom button next to the shutter release.
@Gordon Laing , I used to charge my a6000 with a USB charger I think :)
Charge yes, but not power. When you plug in the a6000 it says it's charging and you can't use it. Now you can use it (the a6100) while having it plugged in
yes, you can charge over USB, but the new models can also power the camera over USB while you're actually using them, so they let you extend the actual battery life.
Which one would you recommend? Canon M50 or Sony a6100?
I was looking for the same cameras. But, the m50 has not fast wide angle lenses as Sigma 16mm f1.4. In my opinion I prefer the a6100. For E-mount you could get three options Samyang AF 14mm F2.8 FE, Sony E 16mm F2.8 Pancake and the last one is the best Sigma 16mm F1.4 DC DN lens. In the other hand, the canon m50 has not sense lenses as the Canon EF-M 22mm f2 STM equivalent to 35,2mm, this has not sense, the other option is to use ef-s lenses in ef-m mount. But, you need to buy an adapter. The worst Option, AF doesn`t work as the EF-m Lenses using EF-s lenses...
@@IndigoChannel1 I don't like M50 because of M50 show preview too long when I want to take next short
...you mentioned that the 6100 has no recording limit. I heard in another rehired that it does have the 30 minute limit. This is the deciding factor for me to pick up a couple of these as b and c cameras...
I haven't tested the length YET but I checked with a Sony engineer and he said it was unlimited. I will confirm when I test myself though.
@@cameralabs ...much obliged for the response! Looking forward to find out.
Some of the key differences between a6400 and a6100 are missing:
Larger buffer size
30 min movie limit
Missing 102400 extend iso
AEL AF toggle lever
Wait! 30 minutes limit? If I'm not wrong, none of the cameras you mentioned above have any kind of recording limit
@@manishdey2546 yes, a6100 adding that, please refer to B&H spec page
The A6100’s and 6400 are now ~$300 apart in price, with or without the kit lens
When did cameras get this expensive? O_0
When phones wiped-out the affordable end of the market
Sony has refreshed and covered just about all APSC models possible, yet there are still complaints
I know, people don't seem to like choice, ha ha.
if there is one thing they really need to add is FULL touch screen support and not just touch AF. as in, the menu system should be touch interface too. it is already 2020 soon and Sony users are still struggling with horrible ergonomics and physical buttons
@@astigmatik No problem with ergonomics on my Sony's, touch AF is all I need, I'm not constantly menu diving or reviewing photos, I'm too busy taking pictures. These are cameras not phones.

There would be much less complaints with the new APS-C releases as long as they were priced right:
A6100
torn between the 6100 and 6400. $300 difference can afford me to buy a mic and some other items for the 6100. As not knowing much about cameras I am wondering if it would even be noticed. Just really want something to make my YT videos look more professional than my GP Hero 8.
Is my 6400 really wheathersealed? Never heard that before.. Cool (good for shooting in the snow etc..)
A6300 and up are weather resistant. Not for swimming.
Today I m torn between the a6600 and the Fuji X-T3 for less price.
Sir I confused what I buy for photography can you help me please🙏🙏🙏
for photography I would get any Sony thats a higher model than a6000,,whatever my budget would allow,,, I started with a6000, then got a6300 & now taking pictures with a7iii
Thanks again, Gordon! Although I already know the differences between the 3 models, it's still nice to hear it from you!
In a nutshell here is the main differnece between the three in ascending comparison:
A6100 vs a6400- Low rez EVF, non magnesium body, not weather sealed, no profiles in video (slog), less buttons. Price Difference is U$150
A6400 vs A6600 - No eye focus in video, non magnesium body, IBIS, no audio out. Price difference is U$500
A6600 - NO flash hot shoe. larger grip due to the fz100 battery.
The a6600 is overpriced in my opinion. at U$500 more vs the a6400. If it were U$1,200, more will bite. But it will hit that price maybe in 2-2.5 years. It may drop U$100 on the first year. The way I look at it, Sony may want to really push people to the a6400. This is not a new pricing strategy. But it is patently obvious in this case.
Personally, I don't think that the a6600's IBIS is good enough, especially for video. For photos, it helps a bit. But you still need the lens to have OSS on the lens for it to be a bit useful in video. This shows that the a6600 is still using the old a6500 IBIS tech. To my eyes, I'd gravitate to the a6400 as the IBIS on the a6500/a6600 is virtually useless. And you are right, it would be better to get a gimbal for that U$500 difference. There is also the cheaper Zhiyun crane M2 for U$350 if you just use it with light lenses (like the kit lens).
The a6100 will sell well. This is most true that Canon basically has nothing to front that is as good in performance. Nikon, by default that it has no MILC and its DSLRs are not really making any impact, is absent. Fuji also has nothing in that price range . Think of an a cheaper XT-30. Maybe they can come up with something to match the a6100.
In essence, the a6100 will sell a lot and the a6400 will be 2nd place. We shall know the outcome of this in the 1st Quarter FS in 2020.
Just a question for you, Gordon if you will do a comprehensive test (to this)
- how long is the battery life in 4k-30p shooting?
The A6400 has a magnesium body, to quote Sony: " body, top cover and front cover use a light but highly rigid magnesium alloy". Please check your facts before making such false claims. www.sony.co.uk/electronics/interchangeable-lens-cameras/ilce-6400/specifications
@@ceddo2511 who's making false claims?
@BenBenson the A6100 has the same battery as the A6400 which managed abut an hour of video in my tests BUT a different body material which may affect overheating. I'll test and report back.
@@cameralabs I was correcting Mel Enriquez above who claimed that the A6400 didn't have a magnesium body.
@@cameralabs thanks! Looking forward to it!
I would just get the a6300 it's the same camera only a bit older/cheaper and with the added bonus of magnesium alloy body, weathersealing
yeah, if you dont need flippy screen a6300 is a beast
Thanks for the video. But i still love my a6000 with Sigma 30mm f1.4 dc dn lens with godox x1ts and 685s flash... Perfect picture and video quality anyway... And... Btw....
I think you forget to mention about the a6600 lacks of pop up flash other than the others...
Yes you can power the a6000 by usb
I don't understand why they even bothered with the 6100. The 6400 seems close enough in price to compete against whatever the 6100 would go up against.
It is very close, but equally if you don't need those A6400 benefits, you can save some money and go for the A6100.
The only thing wrong with the A6100 is the price. Been extremely happy with my A6000 but would like to try the improved AF and eye detection, but £829 seems steep to me for what is essentially just improved software.
Weeeell, you are getting more than just improved AF, but if you're not into video, it does become less compelling.
I’d still get the a6400, because I need a better body that doesn’t seem plasticky, & I shoot a lot of video so I need picture profiles for grading. I also shoot a lot of portraits so I need a better EVF
That's a solid vote for the A6400!
Agreed! I’ve still been kinda eyeing the Fuji XT30 because it’s competing with the a6400 In the same price point, but only being able to shoot at 4K for 10 minutes is a no go.
is it full frame?
Not really. It is APS-C sensor
선병돈 for real?

@@OmarZ77 ahh yea like in terms of sales of mirrorless, the last time I checked Sony is behind Canon
I can't understand why you like to shoot at such a large aperture, so most of the time the subject is not in focus, it is blurred! For those who watch it is absolutely annoying!
I like the style, but I do hear what you're saying and in more recent videos I've increased the DOF on my product reviews.
Why oh why would you get this over the A6400. It makes no sense.
Because you may not need the magnesium body, s-log 3 or higher res viewfinder as I pointed out.
Gordon. That is absolutely true. But it’s virtually the same price. The A6400 is quite a bit better, for only about $100 more.
@@RockyColaFizz You're not wrong. But the psychological jump from $750 to $900 is big.
I'm switching from Nikon D3300 + 35mm F1.8 to Sony a6100 + Sigma 30mm F1.4.
I'd like to do do street photography, portraits and architecture photography, but I also need flippy screen and reliable autofocus to make videos for my CZcams channels. Canon EF-M has no growing possibilities to full-frame and Nikon Z50 is 150/200€ more expensive, has lower resolution and older sensor, worse autofocus and a flip-down screen that is useless on a tripod. Moreover there's no Sigma 30mm F1.4-alike lens on Z mount, while APS-C lens selection on Sony looks better. I also thought about switching to Fuji, but the X-T200 costs as much as an X-T30 here in Italy, they have less third-party lenses and their good ones are quite expensive. Moreover, as it is with Canon EF-M, there's no full-frame growing future here.
Anyway, I know I'm gonna miss the handling and solidity of my trusty Nikon D3300, but do you think I made the right choice?
Lamao why sony introduced this camera. Everyone gonna buy a6400 for 150usd more, not this one😂😂😂🤣😂
Well in asians country, $150 price difference is a lot...sometimes the actual pricing is more than $200 after conversion
A6100 will sell well after some time when the price dropped to $650 or $600 no other camera has real time autofocus like this has.
Funny, that was the new sucker price. The price difference today makes a little more since. Averaging about $300 at Best Buy and other electronics retailers.
A6400 is loosing buyers... It is too close to A6100 than the name would suggest, compared to A6600. Maybe 3 models are too much
Quite the opposite. A6400 has killer features like Slog, HLG, and can be bought on sale for $800. It also gains buyers who think A6600 are too pricey.
They're selling 5 bodies, only the 6300 has been retired. They're hitting almost every price point at 6600=$1,400 / 6500=$1,200 / 6400=$900 / 6100=$750 /
6000=$450.
Why is a new model more expensive than the over 5 year old predecessor? Should electronic not getting cheaper over time??? I mean, if the A6100 costs 300 more than the A6000 imagine what a A6500 or A6600 will cost... sure way over 1000USD or more... and that's just stupid. After 5 years the newest version of a camera (the A6600!) should cost around the same with new features. And not double or triple the price. And the A6600 is basically a better A6000 and Sony should stick the A6100 and A6400 where the sun never shines.
The older model is cheaper because it is now discounted from its original price.
@@cameralabs The older model should be cheaper, because it is over 5 years old. But the newer models should not be that much more expensive, only because they have more features. For example as far as I remember the Nikon D7100 came for the price of the D7000 and the D7000 got cheaper. The D7200 came for the price of the D7100 and the D7100 and D7000 got cheaper. And the same should have happened for the A6000, A6300 and A6500. They are all basically the same model, just with more features. Electronic is getting cheaper every year.
@@GreatOne0815 Sony has already reduced the prices over time. $200 for the a6000 since 2014 and a6500 since 2016. I found articles that listed original prices of the a6000 body at $650 and kit at $800, and the a6500 as $1,400, same as the a6600 is now. They're keeping the a6000 as their entry level camera. maybe i will try to answer..... the fuji has its own uniqueness with the color style on its own, no other camera brand has it yet, but the video is not as good as the sony (in my opinion), so maybe just ask yourself first do u need particular style to build in your own photo style?, or if u just need pure raw u can easy to pick the sony one but need to understanding all the editing process, anyway all photo / video nowaday is edited... its just a matter style / instant or not... and also please take a look as a whole system, LENS / BODY / SUPPORT etc :p good luck with ur new camera, either F brand or S brand u will be happy i believe :p

So much depends on which body you prefer the look and feel of, plus which lens selection do you prefer.
@@cameralabs which one has a cheaper lens selection? I don't mind third party lens or nifty-fifty quality
