Sony A6100 Hands-On And Opinion (Canon M50 Compairson)

  • Today we take a look at the Sony A6100. It replaces the A6000 as the base model of the more advanced APS-C mirrorless cameras that Sony offers in e-mount. I go over various features of the camera such as ergonomics, build, and button placements. I also try some of the videos modes along with the Imaging Edge Android app. Throughout the video I compare it to my personal Canon EOS M50, which has many similar features. As of the making of this video the A6100 has a price premium over the M50, but I think with some time they will be priced similarly. My main focus on the cameras is from a hybrid perspective, so that means both photo and video. I think these camera fit well as an entry point to that type of combination work.

    The great thing of the A6100 is that still in 2023 it's a great video camera and a great photography camera, I just switched from the canon 200D or sl2 here in America to the a6100, and I'm glad I did. Paired with a good prime or art lens, this camera is limitless and even with some budget lenses it produces stellar images. I do hate that the screen is not fully touch, but that's a slight thing to give up for better quality overall.

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  Před 4 lety +2

      You would just barely make it price wise with the A6100 because you need an HDMI capture device to do live streaming, but it's newer and generally more featured than the M50. The M50 isn't great for live stream stuff because its HDMI isn't totally "clean". Canon recently released beta software to connect the camera through USB as a webcam but it has quirks.

    Thank you for your answer. Very good video by the way
    Despite the comments I've seen from Canon for the bright, warmer color, it's a matter of taste too. You suggest the Sony a6100 for all the options to work for 1080p video. I imagine the 16mm sigma will improve the color, contrast and a lot of other things for the quality in general if compared to the EF-M 15-45mm IS STM.
    But can the M50 with the base EF-M 15-45mm IS STM lens do the job for an overview for my needs and to start the video. I ask that because there is a big difference in price compared to a camera with the 16mm sigma

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  Před 3 lety +1

      I don't have a great way of answering questions like that. I can't say if it will work for you because standards, needs, and skill level are different between people. I don't want people coming back at me complaining I suggested something that ultimately ended up not working great for them or they can't figure out how to make it work well enough.
      So I'll explain how I use the M50 for video:
      Indoors I tend to use lenses besides the kit lens. Outdoors I use the kit lens a lot. Lighting matters a lot. Amount of light matters a lot. I wouldn't use the M50 above ISO ~640 if you want the best quality. All of the 24mp Canon cameras are not amazing in low light. For videos where I am talking to the camera I tend to use the 22mm f/2. Even with ~60 watts of daylight color LED lights and a diffusion panel in front of them, I still use the camera and 22mm around f/2 to f/2.8 with that amount of light. I could certainly use the kit lens and probably have occasionally, but I think I'd want more light.
      Knowing what lens you need and knowing what apertures you need will end up being something you have to figure out yourself. I'm the type of person that makes it work but my standards are not that high. I do think the M50 can certainly work in most cases, which is why I said I've made a few hundred videos with it... but it depends on you to make it work. The Sony won't be some perfect solution either, but it has a few quality of life improvements and tends to have better low-light capabilities. That's why I tend to suggest it over the M50.

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  Před 3 lety +1

      I looked at one of your videos. The A6100 is a nice camera for sure. I think it's going to depend on how much you'd want to spend. If you want camera video quality above the A6100, it will get really really expensive like the full-frame Sony A7C and above that the A7S III with its full-frame and 10-bit color. I think that the A6100 is more than sufficient. There is the A6600 that is APS-C as well, but it does have the benefit of a larger battery compared to the A6100. I don't know how much longer you can recorder per battery, but that info is out there I'm sure.
      To really boost quality you want to consider lighting. I think that will take your video quality to the next level after getting the A6100 compared to a camera more advanced than that one.
      Browse channels like these to learn about lighting:
      czcams.com/channels/BgTfrT490nBiogh6MKm0gw.html
      czcams.com/users/dslrvideoshooter
      Lenses will depend on how you want to frame up your videos. It looks like you want to consider the "minimum focusing distance" of the lens so you can get decent close-ups of things like those bolt removal tools. Figure out what focal lengths you use on your current camera and translate those into the Sony system.
      I'm definitely hoping that my channel will grow. I'm nearly 10 years in at this point. I get around 85k views per month, but my subscriptions are low. I do what I can, but it's up to people to decide if they want to stick around.

    • @BuddysDIY
      @BuddysDIY Před 3 lety +1

      @@ScottJWaldron you're speaking chinese to me boss hahahha.
      So what you're saying in simple terms is the 6100 would be the best bet for me in terms of being under 800 bucks?
      It's 750 at best buy. I don't really wanna spend too much more. Another 100 to 150 if there is a feature I would highly benefit from.
      It has the 3.5mm jack so that it huge for me since I can use a mic since I would rather have my voice being the focus.
      Now in terms of growing I'd recommend having a call to action or a quick Intro or outro ssying
      "if you want to get all the newest information and level up your photogray game start now by subbing" or something like that
      If you see my videos you'd see that I have little reminders of sub buttons I add in.
      your review was awesome and detailed and we'll organized. But slot of people may just click off because they got the into they wanted at the moment.
      Try and think of something you can incorporate in your videos that reminds people "hmm, I wouldn't mind getting my camrea and photography knowledge from him"
      Just some advice that I've learned from watching other youtubers and listening to coaches. Gotta put yourself in the viewers shoes!

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  Před 4 lety +1

      The A6100 (e-mount) has a much larger collection of native lenses available for it. I think the sensor in the A6100 would give you less noise at higher ISO than the M50's sensor too. Though some people are really into "Canon colors". If you shoot RAW it's a non-issue. I use the M50 for my channel, but it was one of few options at the time with the combination of features I wanted. If you can, try them in person somewhere. Ergonomics are important. You might like how one is used over the other. Both can do the job. I can't remember offhand what features the A6100 has while typing this on my phone, but the M50 has the drawback of no wired cable release port. It's a nice thing to have with some genres of photography.

      Scott Waldron Hi Scott, thanks for getting back to me. Are there any other cameras you would recommend? I’m new to photography but fairly tech savvy so I want to avoid getting something to entry-level that I might get bored with in a year or so but also I’m still very much a beginner and also don’t have the funds to go too sophisticated. Hope that makes some sense and thanks in advance!

      @@jamesmull11 The Sony A6400 has more settings and features than the A6100. A step further from there would be the A6600 (aps-c) or A7iii (full-frame). On the Canon side there is the Canon EOS RP or the more expensive EOS R. Those are both full-frame with more features than the M50. There is the Fujifilm X-T3 that's the most advanced APS-C camera currently. Fujifilm's stuff is very photographer focused, but the X-T3 has a lot of advanced video features. Nikon has the Z6. It's hard to go wrong with cameras these days. Like I was saying before, ergonomics can be a differentiating factor if there isn't some specific implementation of a feature you want. Out of all of them, I'd suggest checking out the Fujifilm X-T3 first (though I think there might be a new model coming out very soon...).

    i kinda sad that m50 does not have aperture priority or shutter priority in video mode. Only full manual.. i try vlog in manual with nd filter but sometime i go from place to place the exposure keep changing. a6100 for quick and easy , i use aperture priority and forget about everything.I know the shutter speed not look good, but it save time focus on vlog . instead m50 made me keep adjusting the nd filter all the time.. great video BTW.

Shame that the Canon Crops the 4K, of course IBIS was something I was hoping to get but...for an extra $100 the 6100 is the better choice, as at best buy My Best has the M50 on sale for $599 and the a6100 at $699.

      Not sure what you mean. The only Sony sensors that Canon uses are in their digicams like the G7X series with it's 1" sensor. Likely all of their APS-C and full-frame are made in-house and use proprietary technology such as dual pixel AF, which is physically different than normal phase detect on Sony sensors.
