I posted the link off youtube of Mike Mangini world record.
If they could add the 66Samus logo I'd buy it!
Samus. Check this guy out he’s got his rudiments down in an insane way........czcams.com/video/kCeGVn5n9ac/video.html
It's not Rhythm magazine he flashed. Thats his book.
he's not holding rhythm magazine! it's his method he published in the 90's : rhythm knowledge!
He hit 21 single strokes per second during a competition. He was the first drummer to pass 1200 single strokes in a minute, and was the first to beat buddy rich's record. He's nuts
There's not 100 seconds in a minute though
@@floridianthrasher5426 He said 21, not 12
Sorry I was confused
So can I but not when I play the drums. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
@Marcus Guzman I assure you Mike mangini has good technique
I remember watching this solo when I was a teenager and thinking Mangini was a douche. 19 years later and he's playing in my favorite band and I meet him in person and he is legit the sweetest guy. He has Sweet Midwestern Mom energy and is just the most delightful person. Not to mention he is maybe the most technically proficient drummer I've ever heard.
I remember watching this for the first time in '06 (a little bit later than you) and realizing I now have a favorite drum solo.
Sweet midwestern mom energy 💀💀💀💀
I'm just happy I was at this gig!
7:29 the most glorious frame in a youtube vid
Yes! 😂
LMAO it really fucking is 🤣
Lol
Took Polyrhythms I and II with Mike at Berklee. The way he explains his concepts like "half plus one" are just wonderful.
"Mike Mangini might be the greatest drummer to ever live."
- 66Samus
Seconded dude 🙏🏼🙏🏼
He still smiles when playing in Concert with DT. He loves his job and it shows
PROUD TO BE A BAHEE! Great!!!!
Sick
How you do that?
He's fancy that's how
Cringe
Wait... How did you-
That wasn't rhythm magazine, that was his two book instructional course he was plugging mid solo 😂
I remember watching this when I was new to drumming, playing like 1 year max (it's about 13 now) and I wasn't really blow out back then. I did not really understand the technical stuff and what he was actually playing. Watching it again, with some more knowledge, I really am blown out now. Truly one of the very best.
it's funny how you sometimes don't have the musical IQ or experience to fully appreciate what some musicians are capable of.
Interesting fact, Portnoy came to that concert and sat behind the drums during the show.
Interesting fact, Portnoy’s idea of respect when Neil passed away is playing stupid versions of Neil’s playing with a big smile on his face while the rest of us were and still are hurting. I think the world has moved on from (hands) RLRL (feet) RL X 10 (yawn)...
@@anthemgunaether2914 I'm not sure what you're trying to imply, but quit before it becomes more clear to the rest of us.
@@williamsanders2348 Not “implying” anything. I’m SAYING mike portnoy is a douchebag. I’m here to help whenever you need it Bro.
@@anthemgunaether2914 Mike Portnoy is probably one of the most humble dudes on the planet. Just because YOU find his version of respect towards someone does not mean that you get to say it’s “not valid.” Everyone has their ways of dealing with things, and he did it out of respect. If Mike Portnoy had a record of being a douche, maybe you’d be right. But he’s done literally so much for music.
@@anthemgunaether2914 Portnoy is a douchebag for choosing to honor his friend and hero with a tribute? That might be one of the most asinine things I read all day.
I’m guessing bleed wasn’t out when mike played this solo. So that means bleed is playing mangini! WHAAAAAAT??!!!
This is one of my favorite solos ever! Mangini is the GOAT in my opinion. Not only are his chops mind blowing but he plays with such personality and even adds humor during incredibly difficult sections
I saw Mike Magini do a drum clinic back in the day before he joined Dream theater. He's a very hyper & eccentric guy he kept mentioning while playing the drums how he loved these purple drums with Glitter
Saw this solo live in 1999 in Las Vegas. Steve Vai's "The Ultra Zone" tour. Bad-ass concert.
I Hate you..
at this time i was in germany 31 years old blast my mind out with to many alcohol while hearing steve vai records 😂😂😉
Thanks for this info (on my favorite drum solo).
The dude is insane.
How is he insane?
Figure of speech
@@krioni86sa 🤦🏻♂️
@@krioni86sa he has a certificate to prove it
definitely always been my favorite drum solo of ALL time
Same here.
The best part of this is where he switches hands on the single handed roll with the magazines.
Show me where the sound changes between the hands..... I'll wait.
Ooof when the diarrhea blasts kick in midway.
I sincerely think Mike Mangini can play anything, period! From jazz to extreme metal. He is truly from another planet. His techniques are beyond imagination. He indeed won the hands fastest single stroke in the world.
The wrist snap for those single strokes, intricately timed and placed, not an easy feat. Plus, those Mangini faces, too. Gold.
That's his book he is promoting. Not Rhythm magazine.
Came here to say this. But I'm clearly 6 months too late haha.
Rhythm Knowledge!
Mike mangini is too good
Weird to see a younger Mangini. Being old kinda seems his default
I’ve seen this many times it’s my favourite drum solo ever. Every single aspect of it blows my mind, the speed, the polyrhythms, and all the crossovers at the end
What I like about Mike Mangini is he can do it all, at any tempo...yet can still play a straight groove to back a band and get the job done 👏 so glad he joined dream theater and took over for his friend(other Mike, also one of my fa orite drummers)the guy has such a great attitude also...a class act 😎👌🔥♥️👍👏
Teh 90's drum sound is 🥰🥰🥰🥰
OMG! I recently discovered your channel and you are such a great drummer! Please upload more!
@@lyth4082 thank you so much! I'm working on a new release that'll be on my channel very soon! ❤
Mangini deserves way more than DT. And I'm so serious
What do you mean?
@@j.d.7208 Dream Theater is not the most technical band ever.
@@collinmackin5911 Who is? I'm not saying you are wrong it's just I genuinely want to know.
@@j.d.7208 lol, search for Theory in Practice - The Armageddon Theories, thank me later
No...
That pause at 7:29 killed me😂😂 mike's face bruh
He is my favourite drummer and i have seen this solo of him on youtube end no. of times and still, he never fails to leave me dumbstruck! I even think, is he even human? Certainly not 🙌
In 1993/94 I rented a rehearsal room in Somerville MA and Mangini was my neighbor across the hall.. I wish I knew then that he'd go on to be the G.O.A.T! I always listened in on his practicing and he had a steady group of students that he taught.. he was always kind, amazing and actually once changed a dollar for me for the vending machine. Lol
Always loved this solo by him ♡♡
It is gravity blasts, he is so god damn smooth with them. It's crazy. Amazing drummer, works his ass off. Hilarious personality. The middle tom is a rocket tom from Pearl.
Great to see your reaction! This is one of my all time favorite drum solos
There's a video of him doing an awesome drum solo when he was playing with Extreme, which is well worth a watch. Rototoms and polymetric madness. Love it!
absolutely, kicking ass and the visuals with the long hair make him even more cool, if that's possible
I worked in a small club in seattle that booked lots of cool bands,...one of them being missing persons...I think 1993...Mike was the drummer, I did the stage monitors...I had no idea what I was in for...just remember the jaw on the floor for like 8 minutes or so...and I'm a guitar player..but he was just off the charts of insane...symmetrical kit, such a pleasure to watch that from the stage in a small venue...I'll never forget
Saw Mangini on this same tour in Finland. So glad to see him appreciated still in 2020
6:27 that laugh is contagious
Have attended Mike mangini's zoom classes, every minute was so educational and so motivating.
Mike makes it so easy for you to understand complex topics like odd times and polyrhythms.
Respect for him 👊
I’ve watched that video dozens of times and I’m still blown away by it
This was my introduction to him. I’ve loved him ever since. I think he is the best. And what’s amazing is he stays musical no matter how technically amazing he gets.
I think this was the first I saw of him too, in '06.
This was the solo that got me into Mangini.
Oh mannnnn! One of my fav drum solo! Was forgetting about this one! Thx man!
I remember watching it from the reaction stream few months ago, this still blows me away since!
Your videos are always nice, continue your great work!
I LOVE this video. I have watched this video so many times too. One day I want to drum like this guy
The face that screams I'm good but I'm having fun and love the drums. Guy is a damn drum god
I subbed dude, love your personality and videos 🙌
I remember when he was on that tv show Time Warp and they did a slow motion video of him playing single strokes as fast as he could.
Calling a 4-way tie in technical proficiency between Mangini, Thomas Lang, Marco Minneman & Gavin Harrison.
And somewhere thousands of miles above, Virgil Donati is on his own level
@@Artunen lol yeah
Jamie saint merat tho
@@Artunen Shit...Gergo Borlai must be from beyond our Solar System \m/ \m/
I'd like to add Morgan Agren and Terry Bozzio to that list as well!
That was amazing, super humble Samus too, love it
Liked before even the video started, I have seen the Mike Mangini solo so many times I already know this is gonna be good
Mangini is a friggin machine! Love that solo. Wiping the sweat with the magazines while doing the one handed drumrolls 🤣
Monster! Saw this on the Vai tour in germany as well back in the day. Love it!
Hey Sam, I saw mike back in 97 w/ Steve via on fire garden tour. To see that live hurt my brain, was absolutely awesome one of the best shows I have every been to.
Awesome drumming skills!! He invented Bleed before it even exists lol 😎🥁
Fuck yeah! Been waiting for this one!
I have never seen him so surprised by a drummer like this. That is so cool, especially knowing how multi talented 66Samus is.
Had the same Ridgewallet for like 5+ years now. Its awesome!
Having seen this video multiple times... i still get goosebumps and excited watching it! YEEEEEEESSSSSSs!
I’m so happy you did a reaction to this. I saw it about 20 years ago and… yeah.
Many years ago I was trying to find Steve Vai's drummer's drum solo because a friend of mine told me about the dude doing stick tricks while playing. I didn't know at the time the name of said drummer. It turned out that the one I was looking for was Virgil Donati. I found this video of Mike Mangini instead and was BLOWN AWAY. I am still blown away watching this, the guy is on a level no one else is. I once heard that would sometimes spend 10 hours a day practicing. One can tell it is true. Simply awesome.
I still remember the first time I ever saw the vid of that Mangini solo. Was cruising for live vids of Steve Vai, and stumbled upon that gem.
My drum teacher on complex drums: " Don't be intimidated by it. If you can count it you can play it"
Mike Mangini: "Hold my beer"
This is my all time favorite drum solo
Same.
Mike Mangini you are one sick drummer. Jesus Christ. Seriously what the fuck did I just watch? I'm impressed.
I visioned and had one I did.... before I knew who he was. And his double kick and hands alternating singles when I was on rush before dream theater... exactly the year before he got in dream theater. I’m blessed and hope you witness maricles like me and mike of motor city guitar
Not sure if you know who Bobby Jarzombek is, but he has a video where plays through a song called 'Peppered Cancer' which is really awesome, both on a technical level and considering how he sets up his drums in an unusual way.
I think you'd get a kick out of watching it.
Bobby is underrated but drummers that know him be like 0_0
He's also alien, drumming with both soul and technic
Yea, his work on the Spastic Ink albums was crazy for its time. I think you'd appreciate Charlie Zeleny on 'The Machinations of Dementia' (Blotted Science) as well.
He's just an absolute definition of tightness so darn tight that time itself tries to match with his drum parts 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
@@Guppusmaximus I absolutely love Blotted Science. 2 absolutely insane albums 🤘🏼🤘🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Samus: This Drum solo will blow your cav!
Me: DAMMIT! I JUST FIXED MY FUCKING CAV!!
Those are his Rhythm Knowledge Books. Highly worth buying them, the second book gets really hard.
Sam need to cover this drum solo I would love to see him play this or attempt it.
For the one hand drum-roll that is his fastest gravity blast beat because the sound from the snare is like he is doing a drum roll but on one stick on one arm. I mean damn!! No one ever could do that I mean I think you can do it. Probably.
I grew up in MA and my drummer used to get lessons from Mike. I met him a few times and didn't realize until later what a god i has casually met years earlier.
I seen that tour!!! Fucking insane performances by every musician in the stage
Met Mike years ago at a drum festival in holland when he did the Annihilator cd on which he did the song weapon x, crazy fast song and he was a very down to earth guy. Took a master class from him back then
Not only is he super talented, but he's a silly goose while doing it! 10 out 10!
Now, have Mangini to react to your performance on "Hear Me"
Steve Vai came to Louisville Ky many years ago and Mike was his drummer. He was amazing.
I saw this LIVE. And it was just as insane. Of course.
And CLEAN. And REAL. NO TRIGGERS.
Yea, holly crap, How awesome was that!!!!
Mind blowing
It Impressed you so much your beard grew over an inch in awe!! 🤘🤘🤘
This was the first drum solo that I ever watched when I was a teen. I heard one in a song and searched "fastest drum solo", and this popped up. I never forgot this drum solo, but I forgot the song I wanted to look up. Lol
I saw this year's ago. This man is an absolute machine.
Are you kiddin me?this is a classic drum video!!i watch this at least once a year.or the one where he plays blast beat on a mini hi hat with both ends of the drumstick. yes...that's what he did
What an insanely talented drummer honestly 😍
just started drumming a few days ago and it made me realize my left hand is cripple lol luv u bro
haha! most of us have a weaker hand. just practice with it more :)
cheers!!
Man Genie!
I knew the herta bass drum pattern in Bleed sounded familiar but could never place it! I tried playing it after watching this Mangini solo in back in high school.
I met Mangini at a drum clinic when I was a teenager. One of the nicest guys I've ever met. Took time to show me how he holds his sticks, went through his book with me.
Life changing experience.
I have that exact ridge wallet. It's great!
Really, really, really impressive!!! I don't know him, thank you for sharing!!!
How fitting that this god now plays in a band with 4 other musical gods just insane no other words
Mangini inspires and intimidates simultaneously. Thank you Mike!
When he starts shorting out, mind blow
I saw this solo at that Vai show (not this one but the one in SA) it was MINDMELTING live.
i had the honor to watch that solo live back in 2000..
i was there for seeing Vai and i had no clue who Mancini was....and then that solo....
Hahaha that gag at 6:48 where he's been doing one-hand rolls with the other arm up, then lifts both his arms as if you're about to hear him do a no-hand snare roll is gold, even his comedic timing is great
Love him real shame so many people seem to hate him in DT
I've been to a few Vai concerts and also saw Satriani, Petrucci and Gilbert/Bruce Bouillet as G3 and watching them play live makes me never want to touch my guitar ever again. They have a control and mastery over the instrument that I will probably never comprehend.
Woooooh Bleed is my favorite song of all time, Mike Mangini huge PP
