      I noticed something at the end where he is wearing the Pearl shirt. He is involving his thumb a lot. Almost moving the fulcrum behind his thumb so that small movements of his index finger and/or thumb create a modified push pull. That's probably why he can play on a pillow or water with brushes. He creates his own rebound in a way that doesn't use much energy and very little movement.

      This comment is very accurate. Drumming speed is ultimately a function of genetics. Think of it like the autism spectrum, you have people at one who have profound difficulties dealing with people and communicating and relating to them and at the other extreme you have truly empathic people with high emotional intelligence who are formidable communicators and influencers. With the physiology of drumming you have people at the far end of the spectrum with cerebral palsy who cannot relax their muscles and there is even a treatment it using Botox to allow kids to walk better, and on the other end we have people like this guy who can contract and relax his muscles extremely fast. The build up of lactic acid is proportional to the ATP release so there Fore he must also be both very efficient in his movements to minimise work done plus very efficient in moving lactic acidosis away from the muscles being used. No matter how much the average drummer practices and no matter how good their technique, performance will fall along a probability distribution curve where those at the extreme speed end have by chance received all the genes in the right combination to make this speed possible.

    So, I’m taking lessons with the Drum Technique Academy and the hand technique was presented by Ricardo. A 4 week challenge called ‘4 Weeks to 340bpm’. It’s a rotation of the wrist. I can’t share the video as it is the Intellectual Property of DTA. But I’m currently practicing his technique at
 90bpm (😂😂😂)and struggling immensely!! But I can say that it is definitely in the wrist first. With a bit in the fingers. The development actually starts with your hand on the pad. Before even using a stick. The camera cannot even show how fast the wrist is actually moving. We mostly see the fingers. But it is mostly in the wrists.

    He is using his fingers and his wrists just like his ankles he clearly understands the connection. His nervous system is apparently not hindered by doubt which causes hesitation. A concept well understood by Bruce Lee, his teacher and many other martial artists currently and historically. In fact there is a Chinese drummer who teaches similar finger/wrist techniques. One of his students is A-yeon. Riccardo you stomp ass my brother was a pleasure to see you do your thing.

    It's a certain way of tensing the muscles in the forearm. I have been developing similar techniques as a percussionist for the last 20 years. But only a video in which he explains his technique, showed me that if you turn the hand outward it goes even faster. What is very funny I discovered as a child is that if you tense the muscles that move the eyes in the same way you can make the whole world dance for you so fast. It also works for the basedrum, here it is the upper muscles of the thigh that are tightened in this way.

    • @johnjr757

      I learned the same thing as a kid with my eyes. I would freak people out making my eyes move side to side super fast. I can still do it almost 40 years later. I never learned how to do that with any other part of my body though.

    Though fingers may be involved, the whole support system for this is the wrist and the larger muscles in the arm, including the triceps and biceps. Mangini has been developing this technique for decades, and barehanded practice is an important part of developing it. Ricardo is obviously taking it to a new level!

    • @GlennDavey
      @GlennDavey Pƙed 2 lety

      Yeah this video is focusing on wrist or fingers, but it's more like a full-system, elbow shoulder muscle-twitch technique to get that fast. The control of it is the trick.

    Wahahaa. The lip brrrr at the end. That's how I feel with a lot of musicians. With affection and appreciation that is. I played crappy bass a lifetime ago for a couple of years and had heaps of friends playing all the intruments one can buy. And I remember enjoying it then and I still do. Keep on making this kind of content. Music does not make sense on any logic scale and it is what makes us all human. Even if you have AI creating it, you still need a human to enjoy it.

    It’s a very subtle what he’s doing. Keep an eye on his thumbs. I think he’s integrated some push-pull. He’s not relying much at all on the natural rebound of the pad for the up stroke because he used a brush on liquid with speed. No rebound there. Super human technique.
