I went to school with Larnell (yazz skuul) and %100 believe he had never heard that song. He grew up in church and in the gospel community, where you could easily grow up without hearing a single metal song. He's also a rad dude, I don't think he'd put it on. Him getting it that quick is just.. yeah. Big ears, insanely musical. Man's a monster.

For sure. My family for example listens exclusively to Christian music so I get how someone could go without hearing it.
This song should be little challenge for a guy who learned an entire set of complicated jazz music by reading the sheet music on a single airplane flight to fill in for the drummer of Snarky Puppy.
I've seen this story around the internet, and quite frankly I'm disgusted that he even managed to learn "lingus" on the flight😅. But the whole set?.. that's just ridiculous. What an absolutely amazing drummer he is.

@@kingjim007 I mean, there's some pretty technical metal songs out there but if we're comparing the hieghts of both genres in terms of skill and difficulty, jazz is on a whole other level.
you can see it in larnells' eyes when he listens to the song... he is looking at the song, and you can see the difference when he is surprised and looks at people in the room. It's always nice to see someone so talented enter their world.
His active listening skills are so good that I want to tell him the story of my life.

I reckon he spent all his time in music schools and just thinking about jazz and never really had time for parties or rock concerts where he might have heard the song. He's a music nerd! You can't be that good and not spent mega-hours practising while everyone else was being young having fun.

I probably know like 3% of Pop artists today and it's not because " I'm old and was born during the war" either, I just have different taste in music. I’m a massive Larnell fan and have have been following him for years. I’ve not once seen him not smile or enjoy himself while playing. He exudes positivity. Comes across as genuinely good human being. And of course his drumming is up there with the greats.

I believe that the main takeaway from the Larnell Lewis video is watching a truly masterful drummer walk through the song. At the end of this we (the audience) have a much higher appreciation of how clever the original drum track is. Of course we also have an appreciation of how bloody good Larnell Lewis is too.

Exactly! Lars is such a poser. It used to drive me crazy when people would request me to play this song....... I was 14 and I was so far beyond this song I hated it. May as well play ACDC. While zombies were listening to Metallica, I was busy playing Queensryche, Pantera, Pearl Jam, Dream Theatre, etc.

Never have I ever respected a musician more than I respect Larnell, for his absolutely outstanding take on music and culture.

For someone of his calibre, this wasn't a challenge for him on a technical level. The only thing that was being challenged was his memory. He can assume a lot of the moves along the way, because it follows a very calm and steady structure. The most significant parts of this song are the breaks in the drum parts, and how the drums are reintroduced in the next section.
The absolute best podiatrist may rebuild your foot better than Nature but might not be good for a dental reconstruction.
It’s not a challenge for a beginner drummer either.

"How have you never heard this song?" A guy who has spent his entire career playing, learning and listening to jazz and R&B and who, probably, rarely listens to music outside his preferred genres when he isn't practicing, playing or teaching. I bet there are a lot of jazz classics I don't know!

If something is way outside someone's usual genre or taste, no matter how popular it may be for however many years, it's not at all unbelievable for someone to not ever have heard it. There are huge artists on places like Spotify that have tens of millions of followers and hundreds of millions of plays who I couldn't name or wouldn't recognize to save my life.

That performance is what you would expect if Bruno Mars ever did a cover of "Sandman." You can HEAR the pop/funk/jazz/motown influence in the fills and whatnot, but he's totally truthful to the source material. Awesome.
I have never heard of Larnell Lewis. No idea who the hell he is. I feel like I have been missing something very special from my life now, this dude is not only one hell of a drummer but what an inspiration! For the first time hearing "Enter Sandman", I think that had to be the best rendition I have ever heard. This dude is amazing.
Even for a veteran it's a great version, so really impressive for a first time. Him leaning on the snares moreso than the Toms give it a very tight sound.
But that's not a regular dude. He learned the Snarky Puppy songs on a flight. And that is extremely complicated stuff compared to this one here.

About the snare sounding great for this song. Lars uses sticks made by Easton. they are made of aluminum and have a plastic sheath over the rod and ia held in place with a screw on plastic tip. That gives a "dead" or "dry" sound to the snare. MIck Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac) and Tico Torres (Bon Jovi) uses the same stick. Larnell is using a wood stick which has a brighter sound and allows for the snare character to come thru as well. It's something i explored, which is how i know and when there was mention of the snare in relation to this song... well I had to geek out. Carry on.

I know what you're talking about. They're just called Ahead sticks now, I think. I have the Tico Torres model, which are way too long for me. They also look like magic wands. 😂 They were fun for a while, but I eventually went back to wood. You just can't beat that sound. Works great on any kind of snare too: brass, steel, wood, deep, shallow, large diameter, small diameter, you name it.
This video is great. I’m going to be honest, I’m not familiar with either of these guys, so when I saw the title I thought it was going to be a reaction video…which always chips away a bit at my good feelings toward humanity. And this looked like a reaction to a reaction video, so how could I not hate click?
But it had me onboard for positive vibes from the start. I like the non-metal musician respecting the song, the metal guy respecting the respect, and then the blind cover, and then the video wraps up talking about respecting respect, with somebody respecting that. It’s like a respect turducken.
Respect turducken is both my favorite thing I've ever heard and a great way to describe this video.

Or like, we will be watching tv and my wife will mute a commercial and I’ll give her a look and she’ll say “I know you hate that commercial so I turned it down so you don’t have to hear it” and then I’m all disappointed because, yes I hate the commercial, but I still want to hear it. It’s like she thinks I don’t *want* to be angry.
Larnell is one of the best modern drummers out there. The guy is just a genius.
What I love about this is that he gets the arrangement pretty much spot on for all the bits where it matters (basically everythin where the singer needs to know where to come in), and then at the end when everyone just gets grooving, he improvises but does so tastefully and makes appropriate musical decisions. Exactly what you need in a touring drummer of his calibre.
He absolutely killed it. I love the look on his face you can tell he is feeling it.
For someone who sat there listening to the song in its entirety, and then going right in for the full on playthrough, I'd say he's pretty goddamn good for stepping out of his comfort zone.
There’s a video of him listening to a completely jazzy tune once then perfectly playing it back and making a drum track for it first try. Larnell is crazy.

I watched the original video last night so naturally this reaction vid popped up in my feed today (because the almighty algorithm knows me better than I know myself). This sparks so much joy. There are few things I love more than seeing people breaking out of their comfort zones and pushing boundaries of their own skill, nerds doing metal shit, artists supporting artists, and outsiders showing a profound appreciation for something totally foreign to them. This gave me all of that ❤

I think the thing I love most about watching this is the change in his expression/posture as he begins to play. He opens with an expression of pure concentration, but by the time he hits the first chorus, he's clearly in the zone, just letting everything flow. It's a joy to watch!

@@burritoomg he can breathe percussion, doesn't mean it was the 1st time he heard the song or that he learned it by listening to it one time. I think it was pretty darn obvious by this video that he had heard the song and knew it before he started filming. Doesn't mean he isn't a good drummer or that he can't learn songs quickly.
@@literalghost929 he literally played an hour and a half worth of music for Snarky Puppy, for music that he saw 24hrs before recording. He wrote his own drum parts and memorized them on the plane ride to the recording

I think he's really just more in tune with the drums. The drums start a different pattern which matches the faster paced beats during that section, and I think he starts off bobbing to that, it just lines up with the guitar too because the drums and guitar work together so well in this song. The build up to it in the drum line is the same as an earlier section which also had the same brief-pause followed by rapid building beats.
I have always and will always Love this song. Growing up in the projects of NC and being a young black girl/ woman, I would get the weirdest looks when I would sing along and bob my head. I think sharing all music with all people can only (mostly) be positive.
He created, by improvising, after hearing the song one single freaking time, a better drum line for the entire song than Lars ever could have lol
Different POV, it’s extremely satisfying to re-listen to a well known song and hear a breakdown like this. Gives a whole new appreciation for how much talent everyone in Metallica brought to creating this song.

@@flyingfrogofdeath9616 Kirk came up with the main riff, but it wouldn't have made the song groove without the way Lars suggested how it could be changed. Kirks version played the 1st bar one time and then 2nd bar was those palm muted power chords and repeated that. Lars suggestion was to play the 1st bar three times and then 4th bar the power chord thing. Lars also has a big part in making the songs while he may not be the greatest drummer. Kirks version of the riff didn't flow nicely.
@@ManWithoutThePants people don’t realize at all the great ear and vision Lars brings for arrangements once James and Kirk submit riffs.. Lars was once a phenomenal drummer and pushed it, nowadays not so much, but he does a lot more than just that.. you can’t teach a great ear that hears riff potential and how to arrange Melodie’s to carry thru a song, you either have it or you don’t, Lars and then boyz in Metallica have it for sure, that’s why their catalog is almost unmatched in just sheer songwriting masterclass.. that’s also why they became so big and so fast, even early on with the heavier thrashy stuff you just knew it was so much more well written with intent to hook you in with groove and melody

Great video.. Is it just me or has everyone else NOTICED how relaxed he looks playing this unfamiliar song to him??? LMAO!!! As fans we ALL know it, and Lars always looks like it is taking maximum effort to do what he does. This gentleman listened to this one time and deciphered the body of what was needed to propel this song, then he really put some soul into it and the flourishes at the end were awesome. He made this look easy..

They say “Talent hits the target no one can hit, but genius hits the target no one can see.” To walk into this blind only hearing the instruments sans drums then fill it in with this kind of accuracy and not just that but to fill in the parts you missed with improvising that is 100% in the groove of the original, requires nothing short of indisputable genius. Wasn't this like over a year ago? I remember watching this back around later 2020, but I don't know could have been 6 months CZcams kinda blurrs together after a certain amount of time.
You can see by Larnell's face he's in a deep level of concentration trying to remember the song throughout the whole pass. It just so fucking amazing.
Larnell did some different stuff than the original drummer- I do like his version a lot. the man is a master of his craft.
Dude killed it and even when he got the ending reversed it was still amazing. And he did stuff that I don’t know that Lars could do.

Larnell is a genius. He has another video when he plays some jazz tune for the first time. And nails it completely. Also, his work with Snarky Puppy is bloody amazing. One of the very best modern drummers imo

@B Nah that was his first listen and first go. That's why he "phoned a friend" to ask him if she should listen to the song again or just play it and his friend told him to just go for it.
Larnell Lewis is such a force to be reckoned with, but seems like he'd jam with literally anyone and be both competent and courteous no matter what kind of music it is.
this guy is one of the best jazz drummers in all of history in my opinion. He is absolutely incredible player and its amazing to know how great he is at playing drums.

This shows how good Lars was in his prime. There was something deliciously off in his fills and cymbal hits, so that even an undeniable genius like Larnell is surprised by his choices. I know it is fun to bash him, but for me his playing between 1986 and 1991 was incredible.
When Lars made an effort he was an expert at creating memorable drum parts. Not necessarily difficult or impressive, but so damn specific and memorable that if anyone plays a cover you instantly know if they changed something or missed anything. Same with Kirk, he might not be the most technical shredder out there, but his solos stick in your head and fit the riffs behind them like a glove.
His work on AJFA is my personal favourite Lars playing, but the Black Album is probably his catchiest.
People love to hate on Lars. It is very odd imo. He was the absolute perfect drummer for some of the most popular (hipster metal fans do not recognize those however) Metallica albums ever. Yet "LaRs IS tHe WoRSt dRuMmER EVeR!"

He was playing with feeling. Playing with feeling works so well because it’s about fitting the vibe of the song. Folks can clown Lars these days but his drumming fit the songs of the era.
This is a great lesson in how to play a part of a song "accurately" enough to be recognizable as "the song" while still being an individual personal expression of style and approach. Great lesson for anyone learning to play, write, and perform. That it can be done both `properly' and `your own way' at the same time!
Plus that lovely speech at the end about coming to different types of music with respect was icing on the cake.
Game recognizes game - even a `jazz' guy can tell a great metal song when they hear one, and though Lars gets a lot of flack for not being a `technical' drummer or as precise live as a lot of other famous metal-guys, most (respectful) musicians always recognize him as a master of writing parts from a song-smith perspective. Lars is like the Ringo of Metal - even non-drummers can recognize his patterns/intros etc because they always suit/support the song
You never hear the true greats of any style slag off music of different styles outside their own

Whether he has actually heard the song before or not, I'm positive this session would have went the same. The dude killed it on the We Like It Here recordings and apparently he learned all the parts for that on the plane ride over to the session. Really sick drummer.

I found myself actually clapping at the end of his performance. He was so, so good!! And at the end it seemed like he was really having fun with it. What talent!
