Ohhhhh Yurrrrrrr!
Hey man, i know its not common knowledge yet, but better help is a scam. they ripped me off for hundreds of dollars and they did the same to thousands of others..
Man, someone even made a doc about this.. so yea.. man, ya gotta stop supporting them. they literally are scammers...
cant wait to see the masters kit, OOOH YUUUR
You're just as good bro
Do you know what this means... 66samus you need to attempt this song!
This needs more likes. I wanna see that.
Agreed
On fart drums. Without laughing even once.
Facts might as well⊠pump this dude comment so 66 will notice
Yep. And with a timer to see how long it takes.
What I absolutely loved about Portnoy's cover is that he didn't have the kit (or time lol) to really recreate what Danny did during the whole breakdown / bridge phase, but he came up with something that was both close and made it his own. And maybe in some context someone could read that as a bit of a slight, but it's nothing short of incredible what he did in just a few hours.
this.
he employed a tactic I call the "Nick Mason infinite parade of fills" and did he best to make each one fit. For reference, see Atom Heart Mother and Saucerful of Secrets.
đ€đ§ââđ€
It took Portnoy around 5.5 ish hours to learn it, not just a couple. Great, great, job Mike!!!
THIS IS A MATHEMATICAL EQUATION!!!!đđđ
PURE GOLD!!!đ đ đ đ đ
really cool
A song that makes Mike Portnoy have to audibly count while playing is one _terrifying_ song indeed.
What did he say, again? Something like: "This isn't a song, it's a fuckin' mathematical equation!" and "This makes Dream Theater sound like fuckin' Weezer!"
@@DerEchteBold Yep! And I really hope Drumeo can get Danny to try and learn Dance of Eternity as fast as possible. I'm sure he'd have a few choice words for Mike as well. đ
I saw Tool live on Stockholm a week ago... And the sound of Danny beating those drums on Pneuma... WOW.
Saw the same concert, holy shit it was so good.
@@Figurehead87 I was not there. Iâm very jealous. đźđą
I saw them in Manchester last month, was insane. I was rocking back and forth and fist pumping like someone who needs to be locked away.
Saw them in Memphis right before the pandemic. Mindblowing is an understatement.
Too bad Keenan sucks the shit out of a dead man's ass.
Danny's drumming in this song must go down in history as one of the greatest drum parts of all time. Absolutely incredible, and on a completely different level.
I've watched the Drumeo video so many times, it's so good to watch Mike's process, not to mention all the puns and one-liners. I love how his final take on it still sounded fitting for a Tool song, but it certainly felt like Portnoy's style of drumming.
I really dig Mike approach, but I also think the playback helps him a lot to sound somehow authentic to a tool song. Mike is incredible and I'm a big fan, don't get me wrong. I just want to emphasize that Danny's version is soooo much more nuanced and elaborate and those toms in the background really carry the song
@@HiFisch94 yes, and Mike was not short of appreciating it.
Two incredibly talented drummers playing an incredibly challenging song? Fuck yeah dude let's go đ€đ»
Brother Samus you need to get more into Tool. I slept on them for too long, and discovered later than most the Danny Carey is the GOAT.
Best way I can describe it is that he speaks a different language from than everyone else in the game. Unreal skill.
Someone please talk Danny Carey into a play through on a Dream Theater song!!
Danny is a good drummer but thereâs no way he could play Dream Theatre songs
@@Hhhlll7778 You think so? I think he could.
He could do 6:00 or The Mirror or Ytse Jam or potentially Nightmare. Nightmare would be cool af
â@@mowglijungle4810 learning to live is harder
@@Hhhlll7778 if you know Danny Carrey what you just said made no sense
Probably the most difficult test for a drummer, to try to figure out what Danny would play. Got to say, Mike did a fantastic job making for some genuinely incredible interpretations
Mike is a freak of nature. I have never been able to grasp how he plays with all these different groups (that all play epic pieces of music) and still nail all of the parts live. It's insane.
This video of Danny playing Pneuma is the most wonderful performance by a live drummer I have ever seen. I lost count of how many times I watched it. Portnoy did a great job, but the way Danny plays that song is on another level.
Mike was trying to learn this in a Drumeo video! He was struggling with it. He admitted that this was a ridiculous song to learn! They did several takes and put them together. Portnoy is a fucking great drummer!
I haven't learned this song but for what I understood, the main riff is 33/8 (hence the 33 on his jersey) split in measures of 6/8 and 5/8. The whole song plays with sections of 3 and polyrhythms in 3. Portnoy had to record it in parts because he couldn't do it in one take. That's how complicated this song is. He did an amazing job.
No, the 33 on the jersey is for Larry Bird who played for the Boston Celtics. He wears the teamâs uniform of the city they are playing in when on tour. They were in Boston when this was filmed. Heâs a big basketball fan.
@@cedricyoung4974 it's a happy coincidence.
33 - ĐČŃŃŃĐžĐč ĐłŃĐ°ĐŽŃŃ ĐŒĐ°ŃĐŸĐœĐ°
Fun fact, Adam and Justin are using 3 different delay pedals for pnemua because they noticed that Danny speeds up when the tabla is introduced (the difference is 2 bpm 113 to 115) and then at the end they use ANOTHER delay pedal because of the same reason.
Well he doesnât play to a metronome
Also where did you get that info lmao
I watched this Drumeo episode. It took him only 3 hours to get this song down which I could never get this . Itâs impossible so good on him. True master of his craft.
Mike had to learn this in about three hours which is honestly ridiculously impressive as not only did he have all the equipment but this is such a notoriously difficult song to learn.
Danny's ability to use polyrythms is unmatched by anyone i've ever seen live or on CZcams. There are other great drummers but Danny is just wow!
Love how samus made the video exactly 22 minutes long. Oh yurrr!
Mike is the Family Size bag of classic Lays tater chips of progressive drumming.
Those toms sound f*cking prime.
33/16 is one amazing sounding time signature, I'm not sure I ever want to try drumming to it.
33/8, its 2 measures of 7/4 and one 5/8. Genius.
I mean the song is genius
@@balintgalambos691 Pretty sure the drummer confirmed it was 33/16 not 33/8. No need to be rude about it - I may be mistaken and that's fine.
@@balintgalambos691yeah, but you need to groove it!
â@@thornecroft3509 it counts easier as 33/8 imo but I'm also not a drummer. The song is so annoying to count how it's written on the sheet music that I just tell people to count it however they see fit.
The sheet music is something like 6/8, 4/4, 6/8, 5/8 which repeats, and there's some measures of 9/8 thrown in.
Where is your drumeo video, âfirst time hearingâ?!?!?! Been waiting for it
Me too!
I think this leads to the finale of the series, when Drumeo brings in Danny to play The Black Page.
Such a complex song. If youre blowing Portnoy's mind in him trying to learn it, you have a complicated song lol
I actually believe that how these are set up is that the drummer who is playing in the video has no knowledge of how the drums should be played for the song. So they listen to the song and put their own beat on the track.
So everything he's playing here is his own playing. Just his interpretation of how to play the song if he played for Tool instead of Dream Theater
I could be wrong. But that's how I've seen a few others happen. So I'm only going based off of what I've seen
@@user-jp1hs6sl3h Most of Drumeo's videos are in that format, but in this Portnoy was explicitly allowed the freedom to listen to the track (with drums), read the transcription, and watch a playthrough as much as he wanted. That said, not to take away from the insane ability here, dude knocked it out of the park completely in such a short amount of time.
â@user-jp1hs6sl3h they have 2 formats.
1st: drumless track for complete creative freedom.
2nd: challenge them to learn the drum parts as close as possible as fast as possible.
This was the 2nd format, in which Mike obviously smashed it, because no one is going to remember every note played on such a complex 12ish min long song.
@@user-jp1hs6sl3h thanks Sherlock. All of us knew how these videos work. But good for you finding out on your own :)
It's impressive that Portnoy can learn another person's complicated parts so quickly. It's also impressive that he can make the bridge section just a little more "him" without changing the vibe. I'd love to see Danny try a Dream Theater song.
The whole video of him learning this and playing it is the definition of tasty.
Watching Mike learn the song was both very interesting and amazing, to see him struggle to learn the timing even with his talent and then nail it after just a few hours was just amazeballs.
I think we need to get Danny into drumeo to play the hardest dream theater song.
Dance of Eternity
I'm sure he could
Probably would be easy for him⊠still would like to hear him crush The Glass Prison đ
Iâm very amazed by mikeâs performance! In 3 hours he memorised everything!!! Danny played the song really well too! The song is amazing too! Well done both of them!( Mike for playing it so well and Danny for writing such a difficult song!)
This original video blew my mind. There is no debating that Mike is a fucking LEGEND, but if Iâm not mistaken I think it took him 5 hours altogether and the final performance was done in segments due to the complexity and duration of the song. Thatâs insane!
8:11 He just put the snares on :D
Two of the best. Love your videos bro!!! Keep it heavy!!!
Two different kits. And Carey had been working on that song for years. Love the Ports.
Every time I watch Mikeâs part back it amazes me more. Itâs actually crazy that he played it so well after such a short time
im a bass player and the first time i watched this i couldnt help but giggle the exact way he does. its absolutely mind blowing how quick and well he played this, even for Mike Portnoy. that shits impressive!
Time spent - Mike Portnoy - 5:20
Time spent - Danny Carey - Just over 14 years...
Hell yeah Samus!!!
Wholesome prefaces like that are exactly why I'm subscribed đ€
Yes dude the flem on the drop is soooooo good. I couldn't even imagine trying to learn such a hard time signature in a day. đ«
Always enjoy spending time with you, Samus. Yes. Listen to more TOOL. They have amazing music, space-time, voice, & lyrics.
I love your videos man! I canât believe how good you are! Keep it up!
Sir thank you for the jam session!
Honestly just loved this whole video, So goooood đ„đ„
Awesome reaction! These are two legends of the game!
Can't wait for you to play this in the upcoming Drumeo vid ;)
Oh Sammy, this is a VERY hard rhythm to work out. Mike did superbly.
Portnoy is legendary and I thoroughly enjoyed his rendition as it is super entertaining to watch him drum... BUT! Danny Carry does it so *clean* and that breakdown is just ... Chefs kiss...
My top two rock-prog drummers. Both killed it. Nice vid
Samus we need to see your cover of this next!!!
Now we have a smidgen of an idea how Colaiuta felt when Zappa had him sight read the Black Page during his audition.
Yessss, I was sure you weren't going to disappoint :D
Don't count! It is music. Just feel and remember the groove!
Danny is the best, its a really high bar to try and hit for Mike Portnoy, especially with only 5 hours of practice. How 66Samus has never heard this song or doesn't listen to Tool is the biggest question I have. Youre missing out on one of the greatest bands with arguably the greatest drummer to ever get behind a kit.
Something Iâve found over the years that helps me learning these songs is to focus on the hihat/ride sticking patterns.
Thank you samus
When I saw you were reviewing Tool I had to watch. đ
Sometimes he play with vocals and After that with bassline or guitar, that's just amazing
hands down my favourite tool song! love love love the drums in this and mike did awesome.
I always felt bad for the drummer of Tool (Danny) , since the first song they ever dropped to today, his job has got to be pure torture. The drums are what got me into the band, Neverending god tier creativity and skill. A true master of his craft. Portnoy did an amazing job here, must've been excruciatingly painful and taxing on the brain.
The difference of someone trying to guess by ear (maybe a video closer to the end when Mike was going through it) who has made complex drum parts vs. the one who wrote the part. Mike did a phenomenal job and hopefully we get that match-up of Danny doing The Dance of Eternity
The time signature is spoiled on his jersey: CAREY 33... (or 12-11-10, or 6-6-5, 6-5-5) Mind = blown!
get out! đ€Ż
the song played among the GODS of drumyal
Unrelated to the video...but over here jamming and realized seeing you cover Dont reach for me from knocked loose would be so sick...
both of them are great and amazing, i would love to see and aproche of you covering tool please
The video from Drumeo needs a watch by itself it's amazing
Dude, you should do a cover of this from learning to execution.â€
I love what Mike did there. Heâs a monster and itâs nothing short of incredible. And I find it so amazing that heâs down to having the whole struggle filmed.
Also when comparing the thing is that Danny plays the song differently than itâs on the album. The 4 on the floor on the Hi Hat for example.
Great choice of video comparisons - I love it. You should make this a series.
Joey vs Jay vs Eloy
The Rev vs Mike vs Brooks
There are others, but Iâm sure you get the idea.
The sustain and sound is tightly connected to the thickness of the shells. He talks about it in his video with Rick Beato.
Now we need to see 66Samus doing a cover of this but with blast beats and double kick for the fun of it.
Samus. Listen to more Tool. They are so slept on
Mike is a fuckin genius
17:40 I needed that break.
What a fucking master stroke by Vic for making this drum cam video ! Most jaw dropping performances in reason years !
Thankyou Marshall
đŻâ„ïžđŠđș
17:40, gotta dodge on that one Sam, caught me sleepinh braaah đ
Both are masters of their craft; I enjoy both of them immensely. It is really cool to see Mike attempt Pneuma, it would be very cool to see Danny attempt a DT song.
That was some of the best drumming I've ever seen that was absolutely amazing he was so creative in the parts that he didn't know
11:45 Yeah, he did that for an extra mandala pad on his left. He said the main challenge was to find a remote that had the same feel as a direct hi hat pedal.
Do you by chance know which one he uses?
great drumers
That is one hell of a kit.
This really messes with the internal metronome!! Great vid! I'd love you to see you react to some of the Top Secret Drum Corps stuff. Very different but it's some precision drumming!
Tool songs will live on forever!
Iâm so happy to know that people like Tool and donât just make fun of them for having long songs
Dan is THE man. . . who has a decked out drumset with some sophisticated imagery, with a band that mimics this dynamic theme, with stage lighting that would blind you from the international space station. . . and he's just chillin in his basketball uniform sponsored by GE.
LEGEND.
finally reacting to pneuma!
That snart at 17:40 startled me đ«„
Good job.
ok, well now you have to cover this!
So the video I needed. Canât believe everyone in the world is not a massive tool fan!!! đ€đ»đ€đ»
SOO EXCITED FOR DT16 WITH PORTNOY BACK!!!
Crazy Mike! Isn't the main part a 12/8th divided in 5/8th and 7/8th or something... đ Mr. Portnoy "mastered" that song in just a few hours! Amazing video, Samus đ€
I mean to be fair Portnoy had a day with this song. Danny wrote it probably over months, refined it and also drew from decades of playing this feel he pioneered in Tool.
Wow Mike really made it his own at times and did a pretty good job remaining faithful to the epic that is Pneuma.
How tf does Mike get the chorus timings spot on like the long one at the end how!?!đ
Mike certainly adds some new cool elements to the song
Salute to you mike, hats off to you sir
Portnoy is Portnoy, right, but Danny Carey has a unique way to play the drums of this song. Those strokes between the cymbals and drums and the crescendo, the impact is almost like an logarythmic function, every beat has an ease to it, a modulation, that is much more pronounced in the later's way of playing.
