It was never a Triangle. It's name, as you may know, is the KiKoHo, which translates to Ki Blast Cannon. Tri-Beam is another dubism.

The Kikoho I believe is meant to be more like a diamond than a triangle. Also, the cost in life force is very real, that's how Tenshinhan died when fighting Nappa, and that's how he passed out after holding off Cell.
The hand position ki da changes depending on the artist. But I think it's supposed to be a triangle, considering his 3 eyes.

Nothing is ever impossible for Tien, he brings out the big gun. As I mention before, this is something that Goku cannot anticipate. This goes to show you that you can't be prepared for everything but Tien and Goku pull off unusual tactics that makes their fight relatively interesting

Well the Japanese name has nothing to do with Triangles XD Kihoho translates to Qigong Cannon. Quigong is about spiritual energy and stuff so it's basically "Spirit Cannon" is what would be a more appropriate name if you were to say what the attack is called in English.
In one of the video games he calls it “Blast Cannon”, probably Budokai 3. I wouldn’t have been upset if that became a new name for the kikoho.
In a funny coincidence, triangles can make square holes. The drill bits used to make square holes are round triangles. If they decided to animate his attack in a drilling motion, that would remove the dub induced plot hole

Funny I wondered what was the 100th episode of Dragonball so i looked it up and saw it was this episode. What a way to celebrate 100 episodes by introducing a incredible attack, i will admit the only time i underestimate the move in videogames was Xenoverse because i was using it wrong, i wasn't charging it.

If applied correctly the Boston Crab does actually hurt. One of the few legit submissions from pro wrestling.
It did get used in mma once, and the guy tapped. I don't remember if it was ufc or another league.
I used to like the name Tri Beam, but after watching DBZA I really wish that move was called the Kikoho.

Tien tri beam would have killed Goku if he did not avoid it. Tien tri beam was able to trip 2 form cell who was millions times stronger than him. So with Goku and Tien being almost equal the attack would have killed Goku if the attack hit him directly.
