Loved watching Nevin play. He always played with a smile on his face and you could tell he loved every minute of it. Sadly he never got enough opportunities to pull on that Scotland jersey.
He was probably the most skilful player Tranmere(my team) ever had. A joy to watch and complemented on the other wing by the much underrated Johnny Morrissey . Halcyon days indeed!
One of my favourite players ever. Great childhood memories.
So refreshing to hear a footballer so lucid and with interests other than the usual clothes, cars etc.. I used to enjoy his music reviews in the 1980s! I'm not Scottish and he's never played for my favourite club but Pat Nevin is one of my favourite players.
True. I think agents and marketing value have much to do with it as well.
What a player, he was so underrated. IMO, he was one of the best wingers in England.
Guardian... You have done me proud on this :) Pat Nevin. One of the greatest wingers that played for Tranmere Rovers... SWA :)
Absolute privilege to watch this man weaving his magic at Tranmere.
Phenomenal player.
He wasn't overlooked by the big clubs. He was signed by Everton in '88, the year after they won the title. Part of the Big 5 back in the day.
@Mr Dominic He couldn't do it at Everton; wasn't up to the mark that Trevor Steven set. Not quite top class
What a great little player he was - really enjoyed listening to this.
Great player.
Lovely fella.
brains and class
Not a Chelsea fan by a long stretch but they had a fucking entertaining team back in the mid - 80's with John Neal. Perhaps the most entertaining team they've had since. Funny, Chelsea play good quality footy today, but it's not like their old school, "balls out and up em!" Style. Nevin was superb, great, footballer, he really made them hum. With Spackman, Speedie, and Bumstead, they had a fantastic midfield and they're almost up there with Evertons.' - Nope I'm not a Toffees man either, but I'd say their mid-field was (for a time) more dangerous and consistent than old Liverpools'. Niedzwiecki was also an underrated keeper, and of course old Kerry Dixon. The problem was their defense which was pretty porous, but shite they were a real handful going forward. This lad Nevin really was good. Funny how he says the big clubs wouldn't touch him - I'd always heard Liverpool, and Forest wanted him, but Everton nabbed him... what they did to him there was pretty shite in all honesty. He didn't have the freedom he did at Chelsea.
Great comment mate....I went to every Chelsea home game during the 83/84 season. We nearly went down and had got done two weeks in a row by Derby County in the Cup and the league. First game of the season was at home to Derby and thought nightmare but I went. I had heard of who we had brought in but had no idea what would greet me that Sunny afternoon. I think it was 6-0. Amazing. What a team that was. Last game of the season at Grimsby....won to win the league. Never enjoyed a season as much as that one. Don't get me wrong, I love Chelsea winning everything, but there was something about that team.
Saw him in Euro 92 with Scotland and he was unbelievable breathtaking when coming as a sub vs germany flying on the right wing with his dribbling ability.andreas brehme havin difficulty marking him and kohler have to double up to aid.
spoke to him once outside goodison park, true gentleman and a great footballer
Wow you can really tell how much he loved it. Much better then today's 25 year-old millionare primadonnas. Cheers!
Fair shout.👍
Great player and man! Was the only player to stand with Canoville when he was experiencing atrocious racism from his supposedly own fans. So much love and respect for him!
Brilliant player remember watching him at chelsea real maverick winger, magic
Great player
Best player I’ve ever seen.
He could have been a legend at celtic. What a player on his game
Love his comment on punditry. Too many pundits point out the bleeding obvious under the guise of being experts. Most football journalists are a lot more insightful which is why I prefer to listen to podcasts like The Guardian Weekly rather than some pre/post match musings on live matches.
He may come across as some kind of 'intellectual' but he talks as much rubbish about football as most pundits.
May we have subtitles for these two delightful Australians? I am certain they both have compelling things to say. Thanks awfully.
If you want to see Pat's greatest goal that was filmed, type "Everton 3 Manchester United 2 September 1989".
J-Boogie Brown Always remembered that chip from when I was a kid. Brilliant finish. He had a habit of those kind of flicks.
Better goal with same scoop shot vs charlton
Always like him he always seemed like he belonged in the nme and should have been in a 80s/90s indie band the smiths or such like
Steve Hassle he was on the name, fairly often.Wrote reviews, even.
sorry,*was in the nme*
You no what as soon as u mentioned that it all came flooding back that's right he was often in then.nice one

AT HOME TO MAN CITY ... AAAARGH...
Me too, soggy night that one.
Would have been such a more balanced player if he could have lost the big chip on his shoulder 😜.
Doesnt look like he should be a good footballer but he was naturally gifted
