Joe Brolly on RTE split, Marty Morrissey comment and Jim McGuinness

  • Joe Brolly leaving RTE programme The Sunday Game was a massive talking point after the Derry #GAA legend parted ways after the 2019 All-Ireland final between Dublin and Kerry. #JoeBrolly says he was made to feel extremely uncomfortable and that the direction of the wind had changed. His style of punditry is discussed with Tommy Martin and how his career as a barrister made those GAA Sundays very effortless for him. But his rant about Sean Cavanagh isn't something he regrets - his biggest regret is the comment he made about Marty Morrissey during a Cavan match.

I always enjoy Joe's perspective. Extremely articulate with a well developed sense of fairness and concern for the broader integrity of the game, above the narrow pursuit of winning at all costs. I did detest his Marty Morissey comment , so glad to see he was genuinely sorry for that. He made a sincere direct apology and that always (should be) enough. Fair play!

Glad RTE got rid of him. It is clear from this interview he started to believe his own hype. In my opinion all he ended up creating was pantomime. His MO was blowing smoke up a team that is doing well first Tyrone then Donegal, then Dublin. Then hammering them when they fall and act as if he knew it all along! Complete 180's changes like the wind.
In my view there was\is no sincerity in his football punditry.
Even the Sean Cavanagh issue. He seems to have forgotten that he did not just make it about the game. He attacked the man in question. Remember he said 'Sean Cavanagh has gone down in my estimation as a man!'
Also he has said in the past he just says things for a reaction. But after a while he seemed to forget his main role to analyse a game! Not to pontificate. He used to talk over his fellow pundits. Completely dominate his was always about Joe's theories. The game itself gets lost. The RTE panel is now much better can analyse tactics\the match itself - which is much better than the pantomime Brolly used to create.
