  • These knobs are stuck on many of our vans. Some are broken but some just need some love and attention, lubrication and exercise.

    1. You should fill the Bowden cables with lube like you suggested
    2. You should lube the plastic dial with a grease. Both sides. You'll see the tracks. Don't use sloppy oil.
    3. You should manually turn the knobs in the air box because a common issue is the windshield defroster flaps get stuck. Manual turning can sometimes reset them.
    4. Be super duper careful with the ends of the Bowden cables because they can get crazy brittle
    5. Once you've lubed it up connect the cables and rest the hvac unit near where it screws in and just practice gently rotating the knob in circles to make sure all your lube hits all the spots.

One of the worst causes of it getting stuck is sometimes the windshiled flaps get over extended. They are a rectangular plastic pieces with a rubber trim. If the rubber trim gets pushed through the hole a little rather than resting on top, it can cause breaks in other brittle plastic areas. Getting into that box to physicall touch the rubber flaps is real difficutl and thankfully I never had to do it.

Agree. I’m not sure what the settings mean, and I don’t know the push in v push(out) does. I know one of them in interior recycled air, but the Mercedes code of the dashed v solid line doesn’t compute in my mind.

Push in to recirculate. I don't use the dial, just leave it pointing up and close vents when I want to defrost the windshield.

I wish there was a video explaining the settings of this knob. I just twist and twist until it finally does what I want. I have no idea how it’s supposed to work. In my defense, I only change it when going from AC to heat.

Even after fixing mine, I never turn the knob. It stays straight up and when I want to defrost the windshield I close the dash vents individually with the knob under each vent.

It's the same as a regular car. Vents air to windshield/face, face and feet, feet, face/dash only

@@nyetloki true, I keep twisting till I find the one I want, but I can’t tell anything by the markings on the dial. To be honest though, I fool with it so rarely that I don’t remember from one time to the next which one did what.
I may take time to figure it out and create a 3D printer overlay to place over it.
