The Best Used Truck Under $5K - Here's Why I Bought This 2001 Chevy Silverado and Absolutely Love It

- SOLD I needed a truck. After progressing from Autocross, to Track Events, and finally to competitive racing in the Spec Miata class, driving the race car to the track was no longer a viable option. This meant I would need a trailer for the race car, and obviously, something to tow it with. Not being a truck guy, I had to rely on advice on which one to buy. Also, being a cheap SOB, something new and shiny was not an option - I needed something dependable and comfortable, with a good tow capacity, for less than $5K.
The guy I trust the most on these matters steered me toward a Silverado, and specifically an early 2000s truck, with an LS motor. He said they were incredibly reliable, powerful enough to comfortably haul a race car, and practical enough to fit everything I needed. He was right. At the local Ford dealership, they have a bi-weekly auction of their trade-ins, and after attending a couple of their sales, this truck finally appeared - a 2001 Silverado Extended Cab LT with the 5.3 LS and in 2WD trim - perfect.
The truck was a little rough around the edges, but the bones were good. It was a local 1-owner vehicle, never up north with the salt, and had what appeared to be a well-maintained 172K miles. The top surfaces were faded, and the dashboard cracked, but the rest of the interior was very tidy, and the CarFax showed a strong service history through the years. It was a silent auction, and I bid probably a bit more than I needed to, but it was mine for $3200. Perfect.
Without doing a thing to it, I hooked it to the trailer a few days later and towed the race rig to Daytona without issue - a 5 hour trip each way. It seemed I had found the right truck. Having great raw material to work with, I started to do what I do best with vehicles - spend money on them. It got all new hoses and belts under the hood, new brakes at the four corners, new springs and Bilstein shocks, Firestone Trailering Air Bags, Plugs and wires, coolant, brake, and oil change. Transmission and differential fluid change, and probably some other crap I forgot. I tinted the windows, painted the top surfaces, replaced the windshield glass and gasket, replaced a bad side view mirror, fixed a bad passenger window regulator, replaced the grill and emblems, put in new tailgate hinges,and replaced the cracked dashboard. I also had our wheel guy refresh the rims. The truck was starting to look good. Later I had the headlights restored, changed out the taillights with new ones, replaced the upper brakelight, and changed out every light in the truck to an LED variant. Getting better.
Inside, I installed a new stereo so I could have a backup camera, found some useful gun storage, added a CB, added a Police Scanner, Upgraded the rear view mirror to a temp/compass model, installed my V1 radar detector, added a front and rear dash cam, tire pressure sensors for truck and trailer, subwoofer, fire extinguisher, and other bits and pieces I probably forgot. All in all, it became a silly project and useful tow vehicle, and much more to my surprise - a daily driver.
I now understand why so many people buy pickup trucks - this thing is big, comfortable, rides beautifully on the highway, and fits anything in it I want to, including people. When the big full framed cars disappeared from the roads, I suspect the people who loved them moved right over to pickup trucks - they got a similar ride, similar space, and an absolutely lovely vehicle to live with. On our lot, there's any number of expensive or interesting cars - Mercedes-Benz products, Porsches, BMWs. Jags, and all that - but there is nothing I enjoy more day-to-day than this old, cheap Silverado. It's a great truck, and a great driver. - Auta a dopravní prostředky

Bought my son a 2001 GMC for $3000. After seeing this I,m only now realizing what a gift I gave him,mines a 1992 Silverado ,which we love as well ,runs like a top.

The 1999-2006 Silverado was the best Pickup GM ever made. The later ones are just too big and bulky. Thanks for sharing your truck, you got a good one.
My 91-year-old father owns a 2002 Chevy Silverado 1500 pick up. It sits in his driveway and probably has about 60,000 miles on it. It is literally in pristine condition. He doesn’t drive anymore but he also won’t give it to me. 🤣

Really a great choice!!! Congrats!!! The 5.3 is a great motor!!! I have an older GMT400-style 1997 K1500 Silverado 4X4, and it has the Vortec 5700 5.7L V8 (which I should mention is 306k miles strong). Those engines were all derived from the Corvettes of the time. :)

Anyone who owned a '79 Formula Firebird as their first car in high school is the man in my book. more than a little about them below
I personally owned 6 Gen 2 Pontiac F-body's... First a '71 Formula in Silver, Black standard interior, with the optional 455, turbo and 400 trans, featuring a liquid Mercury filled tank mounted inside the trunk for increased handling.. Next, a Maroon '74 Firebird with Black standard interior, stock 350 2 bbl and 3 speed automatic, which I built using 400 RA-III heads, cam, larger pistons, aluminum intake manifold, shift kit, reverse valve body, dual gate B&M shifter, and headers, featuring Sonic Turbo mini mufflers, pushing considerable power though a 4:10 10 bolt Posi traction differential. Next up, a '76 Formula 400 in Black, with Buccaneer Red Deluxe Cloth interior, featuring the 4 speed Borg Warner Trans with Hurst Hatches and Gothic Script decal kit. Later, came the Canary Yellow '77, with a 400, 4 speed, Black Deluxe Interior, which never had the engine apart, but felt and performed considerably faster than every other, save 2 of my 2nd gen F-bodies. A little more about them below...
I paid 100$ for it, back in 1988, it needing both lower outer quarters, which I installed myself, weld in, then an all-over paint job back to like new. I loved that car and traded it for a V-8 powered S-10. At the same time, I came across a retired local Police Chief selling his one-owner '78 Trans Am, garage kept in Aztec Gold, complete with Screaming "Super-Bird" decal which extended on to the upper fenders in front, again using the Gothic Script writing decals, featuring the 220 horsepower (felt like much more power) 400/ Borg Warner 4 speed, 3:55 Safe-T- Track 10 bolt rear end, , Camel Deluxe Cloth (checkered velour seats) interior, & GM Fisher T-Tops. This car needed most of the 8 Intake valves, as they had split on the margins due to recessing of the intake valve seats. So, the entire engine was rebuilt professionally from crankshaft up , over-bored 10, custom forged pistons, stainless steel valves, a bigger cam featuring a high lift short duration spec. Ported and Polished runners were hand matched, RA-IV heads, headers, deleted catalytic converter, Thrush "Hush Thrush mufflers, full 2" pipes out the rear.
Finally another Canary '79, Camel interior, fully loaded, no T-Tops, no 10th anniversary 400, instead it came with the malaise anemic 403 which had a rod knock. Owned by the John Palumbo, leader of a East Coast regional rock band, Crack The Sky, of some notoriety. I installed a built '70 400 R/A 4 and matching 4 speed in from a totaled '70 GTO. A mix of Honeycomb, Snowflake, Rally II and Turbine Wheels were on all of them.
Any guy that knows cars and loves Trans Am's-Firebirds the way Bill does is Aces in my book!

You have to love Florida gun laws, especially their concealed carry rules, pretty much any non-felon can carry concealed. Same here in Hanover, Pa. , the local town commissioner issues you a concealed carry permit within a matter of hours at the most, good all over Pa. as well as other stated with a mutual reciprocity agreement with Pa and each other !
I'll bet Bill has more guns than will fit into the bed of this Silverado. The sweet extended magazine Marine 870 Remington, and 357 revolver are probably just the flavor of the day for that particular day he was shooting the video. BEWARE Dalton, .. as he said, Bill is old, he's not gonna waste time on swinging at a Snowflake, just shoot them and end it quickly, especially if you keep screwing up on cleaning the front windshields or leaving him to break down with just a bare spare wheel , and no tire on it, or no spare tire at all, with low tire pressure in the rest of them!
The video of Bill Broken down not a mile from Peter's place, in that big land barge on the multi-lane roads, test driving for the video to the dealership was simply a jaw dropper. Priceless, exactly what Bill has been preaching to Dalton about all along that would happen. Imagine if that was a prospective customer road test for pre-purchase! Can you say "lost sale" ? Sitting there, up on the jack, for all the world to see. Meanwhile the local safety security patrol squad just drives by him, and doesn't bother to stop and help or ask if any help was needed. That 1% tax increase at work as Bill wistfully comments. Meanwhile, with no spare tire to speak of, the wrong bolt pattern wheel (GM truck)shows up in the bed of Bill's Silverado with Dalton at the wheel.. The perfect storm of Dalton stupidity!

Love my 2000 Silverado ext 2wd. Had it for 14 years. Put mild stage 2 cam, headers, cai, custom 93 octane tune, efans, and it woke this 5.3 up. Probably makes 375-400 at the crank. Get about 19-20mpg highway.
Can't wait to cam mine.....I've had it for so long and now have decided to modify it lol. (2 inch shackles to get rid of the infamous GM rake, re-wired the cab with thicker gauge and added a sound system with 2 amps and 2 10s, added LED fog lights projectors which recently came out to the market, and my favorite mod of all was swapping the center console/jump seat and adding the 07-13 year model that has a lock compartment directly under the seat. And dual exhaust flowmaster flowFx which is really a magnaflow. )
It's a 2001 I've owned since 2007. I own a BTR Truck Norris cam still in the box, the engine has 235k miles. I think I will just rebuild it. As for the stall, I honestly like the stock feel and I may put a 2200-2400 stall

I bought a 99 Silverado in 2012 and paid $4900.00 for that then. It was a screaming deal at that time already. It was the extended cab but only the 3-door, the 4-door extended cab I believe was optional at this time or became available the next year. It was the long box, which I do prefer myself, I grew up driving long boxes.
The family that had it before me were farmers, so it did have a few upgrades they put on it. It had a grille guard/brush guard, very nice addon, and they had put a full-length tool chest behind the cab in the front of the box. Very great addon. They had also put running boards on it, and all these were sold along with the truck, so I got it with these optional items included.
They had also put on overload leaf springs on the rear end, so I believe they were using it more like a 3/4 ton instead of a half-ton. The frame was cracked on both sides on the rear and a co-worker who is a mechanic welded the frame back together and welded a couple diamond patches over the cracks. Now it's solid.
It does have the 5.3L LS engine and I've had almost no issues with it. This past spring the water pump did go out and I managed to replace it myself with minimal effort. It really wasn't all that hard a job, just took some patience and I did torque the bolts holding everything together back to the factory specs. While it was apart, I also put in all new hoses, heater and radiator hoses, and replaced the serpentine belt and the idler pully's so the front end is pretty much brand new again. Like I said, it was a relatively easy job and just took patience while doing the work.
Otherwise, it's been a very reliable truck for the 10 years I've owned it. Regular oil changes and tires, I'm on my 2nd set right now, and would like to put another new set on. I've got a 97 C2500 light duty Chevy pickup that uses the same size tires which needs an engine and tires...currently looking for a 5.7L for that truck.

I also bought a 01 Silverado 1500 about 3 years ago. Less than $4000. The engine had just been rebuilt and the transmission was newish. Put new shocks on it. Had to have the heater core replaced recently. so did all the actuators and the air condition. Going to have it painted soon and have all the dents and rust taken care of. Probably have all the emblems taking off of it. have put LED lights all in the cabin and on the license plate light. I need to get new parking turn signal lights and tail lights. Think it will be pretty sweet by then. I'm an older guy and I'm not gonna go out and spend$60,000 on a new truck. this will probably be the last vehicle I ever buy. Oh there are some spots on the dashboard that just need repainting. it's not cracked anywhere but on the door panels there are couple of cracks on the drinker side. I need to figure out how to fix that. Anyway enjoy your video I might get some of the gadgets that you got.
Good-looking truck there, Bill. It looks like a regular truck on the outside, but with an excellent setup of communications, stereo w/ backup cam, and wheel gun. I bought a very clean 2003 Silverado last year, and I love it. It's a crew cab 1500 HD, so it's basically 3/4 ton with a semi float rear axle. I'm finally getting around to installing a President McKinley CB radio in the center console. As a truck driver and lifelong pickup truck owner, CB radios come in pretty handy out on the highway and up in the woods when running with other friends in 4×4s. Cheers.

I couldn't believe it myself, even watching the video, and haven't seen then since, or the Cats, Peacocks, Woodpeckers that drill into your skull as Bill says, or plethora of other animals grazing as well as terrorizing Bill on Peter's properly while Bill is filming..
I just bought a 2002 with the 5.3 and I love it. It’s Forrest Green Metallic. Super reliable for the previous owner and me. These old Chevy trucks along with the first gen Tacoma’s and Tundras of course are some of the best trucks built!

I love that truck. If you ever sell it...I would absolutely adore it. I'm a 38yr old, single, retired, disabled veteran. It would be perfect for me and my little dog. I have a rclb 2wd 2003 Silverado 2500 6L 4L80e with 316,xxx miles on it that is worn out, a rclb 2wd 1997 F250HD 351w ZF-5 S47 with 22x,xxx miles that is equally worn out and a 2004 Pontiac GTO T-56 that is torn apart in storage and waiting for a 6L iron block that I have yet to refreshed, assemble and install. If I had that truck I would seriously consider building it the way Chevy should have with a built 6L/4L80e, 14 bolt, might do a leveling kit in the rear, mini spool, ladder bars, upgraded brakes, coil overs in the front. Put a small cam in the 370-376ci overhoned iron block, upgrade the 706 heads, the TBSS intake, 92mm tb, swap in a 216/220, 220/224 or 228/230 camshaft, valvesprings, trunions, heavy wall pushrods, LS9 head gaskets, long tube headers, 2.5" true duals, electric fan, electric water pump, functional ram air, silicon hoses, coler t-stat, NGK TR6s, flex fuel, larger behind the rear axle fuel tank in place kd the spare tire, 20x8.5" factory LTZ wheels. Sort of a Mashup of 1/2 and 3/4 ton parts with performance upgrades. That's the perfect truck and the mods you've already done are excellent. I would adore it if you'd ever sell it and probably drive it for the rest of my life.

Excellent choice in truck things are going go out just have it fixed but that motor will run forever and please remember to change the "transfer case fluid" at the dealer high prices or online AC Delco $86.00 for 3 Qts. I didn't even know I had one to change the fluid.

Thanks for doing this review. My son has my old 2000 Silverado LS extended cab. Truck was too good to sell when I bought newer trucks. Love this thing. These trucks are fairly bomb proof with the weak link being the transmission. But even those last a decent while if you don't beat on them too hard.

I was at your level of pickup knowledge. I needed one so I bought a pretty white 2009 Ram 1500 quad cab. It's my truck and I use it for work and...it has been flawless in serving my needs. Power everything I need clothes seats just a plain simple truck. 260,000 miles now and still flawless running looking and all that. My father-in-law has that same truck you have. Same color and everything. It is a better truck than mine even though it's a 2001. You are 100% right about that truck. I have a 2005 5.3 with over 300,000 miles on it. 2 trips from Cali to Florida and back pulling a travel trailer back the last time. Besides new brake pads, a few oil changes, new plugs, and ,4 new tires I've had no mechanical problems at all in spite of my driving the hell out of it. Still running strong today aside from an O2 sensor code recently that's causing some strange problems I haven't figured out. Most problems I had with it ended up being nothing more than resetting the computer via disconnecting the battery for a day and then reconnecting it and going through steps I found on CZcams to reset the computer. Best truck ever!

1999-2006 GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, Yukon XL, and Chevy Silverado, Tahoe, and Suburbans with the 5.3 Vortec are among the best vehicles ever made. In 2007 GM added the AFM to the 5.3 and reliability went down. Best to disable the AFM system.
I rented a Chevy Silverado a few years back to help with a move and it was easy to drive, easy to park, cruised on the highway at very low revs. I loved it.

Your truck is lovely. I've said it over and over, when I bought my 2006 TBSS (in 2005), I bought an engine that just happened to come with a car around it. The 6.0L LS2 in it was the sweet spot for me - no AFM/DOD, good heads. all aluminum - about the only flaw is the front biased oil pickup, which is easy to deal with or remedy. I'm 6'5" with a bad back, my Corvette days are over. I knew that the rest of the truck was typical GM junk (which is why I also buy Honda/Lexus/Mazda dailies), but the LS2 is so good, it makes the rest easy to deal with. I wish I had purchased a similar 5.3L pickup like yours around the same time - I'm so comfortable with that interior (perfect for the...large man, let's say), cheap stuff and all, and so easy to work on, so many common components in GMT chassis of that era. I keep the same stuff in mine - a little jump pack, a little inverter for my laptop, even your color scheme is right in my wheelhouse. Great ride!

I own a 2000 Suburban 1500, a 2002 Tahoe, and a 2004 GMC Sierra 1500 Quadrasteer...all GMT 800's with the 5.3 like this Silverado. The Tahoe has been my daily driver since I bought it new in late 2001. To date, I have put almost 350,000 miles on it and never replaced the engine or transmission. I've replaced other things, but all in all, its been a great truck, as have the other two trucks which both have around 150K on them.

That is a super clean Silverado and with that first gen 5.3 LS it will run forever with just cheap maintenance.
