Mono blue Tron is surprisingly cheap for such a competitive deck. While still not quite tier 1, it is still extremely powerful, and it can also serve as a great intro point into the format for those that love to play control.
In fact, for the fanatic blue player, this deck offer precise, almost clockwork control. It can also serve as way to start building towards the more powerful, but much, much more expensive Red Green Tron.
Running at about $150, many of these components can be had on the cheap, and a few of the more costlier pieces might already be in your binder.
The heart of this deck are the Urza lands, bring one of each into play and you have 7 colorless mana from three lands. With mana money like that, you can buy your way to victory.
The win conditions of this deck have a beautiful toolkit like nature.
Unlike its bigger brother, Red Green Tron, Mono blue keeps several win conditions handy for different situations. Treasure Mages select the tool you need to win the game you are playing, and Academy Ruins will bring them back as much as you need them.
This is not a deck for those who don't love playing control. Emphasis on the word love. You need to be a control fanatic to appreciate and enjoy the precise construction of this deck. As such, this deck is not for everyone. Even with its relatively low cost, I always recommend players interested in tron proxy a deck first, and practice a lot to see how they like it. Depending on your play style, you'll find it to be either a thing of clockwork beauty, or, or a rusty machine whose gears keep grinding.

Went 3-0 on Tuesday with Mono U Tron in NYC and not the first time I've gone undefeated since finally building the deck a year ago.
Its amazing how the core of this deck is still the same after all these years. I want to thank you because it was THIS video that got me into Modern and Mono U Tron was always a deck I had in my heart's backburner.
    Thank you again Professor.

You mention you must have a way to win the game when you have Mindslaver Lock active. However, you don't need a win-condition, that is the win in itself.
Every turn you are drawing the same exact card and your opponent draws a new card. This means that they will deck themselves and you will not. And as you are controlling their turn their is no way they can kill you.
This is considered an infinite combo and a Judge will give you a win if called and you can show how you will repeat each time without your opponent being able to respond.

Matt Burica You are 100% right and I messed up my explanation of that. I meant that you needed to understand that a lock IS the ability to win. I've seen newer players (or folks borrowing a friend's deck) get called on it and not be able to explain it. Basically, I meant what you said. Everyone look over here! Here! (points at Matt). That. ;)

I am so happy you posted this. I was going to do a video request from you for this deck and you beat me to it! I am new to Modern and I have been testing this deck out on Cockatrice with decent success against T1 decks. The pilot of a deck has a lot to do with it of course but I am still happy to see this have some steam against them unlike some T2 decks which sit comfortably there. I also tested 8rack (which I later saw your video on and enjoyed btw) and I had a lot of fun testing online with that but I became somewhat bored of it. Aside from learning the best things to Thoughtseize or IoK the deck sort of plays the same against most other decks and is rather linear in that sense. Mono U Tron feels like it has many intricacies that can give you an advantage once you learn them and make you a much stronger force with the deck. Game to game it is a completely different experience. That is just my opinion though, thanks for the great videos!

Professor, this is a very analytical and well presented template! Congratulations on your truly wonderful creation with the really funny introduction! However, watching this video did made me feel compelled to humbly ask you if you could please in the near on more distant future present a blue-white control modern deck. I know that in general control decks are not as successful and widely appearing in modern, but in my humble opinion I believe that magic players should not abandon or dismiss control that easily. Aggro and generally fast or combo decks have made a very strong impact on the format, such as mono red aggro or affinity and splinter twin respectively and now the modern version of abzan has made its appearance, but in the recent years there are few to no true control decks in the first positions of grand prix tournaments.

Hello to any people watching from 2017 and on! Well, first off, this deck got expensive. But still affordable and can be put together with a decent build at around $200-300 and for a "perfect" build (varying by meta) around $400-500. So here I will list a deck tech for the version which I have which is the more expensive one.
    1 solemn simulacrum/ Thought-knot seer
    1 wurmcoil engine
    1 batterskull
    2 mindslaver
    1 platinum angel
    1 sundering titan
    1 ugin, the spirit dragon
    2 treasure mage
    1 snapcaster mage
    2 chalice of the void
    1 oblivion stone
    4 expedition map
    4 thirst for knowledge
    1 epiphany at the drownyard
    4 remand
    4 condescend
    3 repeal
    1 spell burst
    1 cyclonic rift
    1 academy ruins
1 oboro, palace in the clouds
    1 ghost quarter
    1 tectonic edge
    8 island
    4 Urza's mine
    4 Urza's tower
    4 Urza's power plant
    And for the sideboard
    2 hurkyl's recall
    1 wurmcoil engine
    1 negate
    2 chalice of the void
    1 filigree familiar
    2 spreading seas
    2 relic of progenitus
    2 spatial contortion
    2 dismember
That's about it. Please comment suggestions or comments if you want. Always open to them. Thanks, and have a great day

A suggestion I have to new tron players are to keep in mind the meta that is within your area. For example I face a heavier aggro format in my locals, so I run thought-knot seers to ensure I keep them from swarming with things like pack rat. I also recommend dropping a talisman to 2 (either progress or dominance works in this regard) and instead go with another academy ruins if you run into a lot of landhate. And as the good professor stated this is only a template so experiment with friends or on forums and keep on testing, the beauty of this deck is its versatility. (Or just throw in an ulamog or 2 for funsies)

I know it's only one to a counter unless they pay one, but on turn one or two, that can be a big issue given the situation, and from my understanding of modern from those around me who play it, turn one and two are usually important for a lot of decks. What do you guys think of treasure cruise in this type of deck? Obviously it's amazing in decks such as UR delver and Burn, but those decks fill up the graveyard fast. What about this one?

I am thinking about building this deck but I feel Reality Shift, Kira Glass-Spinner and Myr Battlesphere should all go in. I also think Serum visions and Trinket Mage may have a place too. Why or why not should I include these cards. I am new to modern and I am considering the making of Blue Tron but I want to make a list on my own as opposed to net decking one. Please help if possible.

From my experience, Trinket Mage and Serum Visions aren't needed, Platinum Angel could be swapped for Myr Battlesphere if you choose, I could find room for Kira, and I'm having a love hate relationship with Reality Shift at the moment.

All these budget decks are awesome! ;) I recently pulled an EXPEDITION scalding tarn and sold it for 350$CDN which of these 5 decks do you recommend that i build? Mono green infect, Mono blue merfolk, mono blue urza tron, Mono white soul sisters or mono red wins? I am trying to make an original deck that none of my 12 year old friends #grade7nerds have. I am a competitive and casual modern/standard player who currently runs red green dragon and blue black control. I would love your opinion professor! THANKS!

    • @LavenderTownWasTaken
      @LavenderTownWasTaken Před 9 lety

metalg33ksolid platinum angel can be played with only 3 lands and emperion cannot. You could play it but it might not be optimal

    • @doesntlikebirds
      @doesntlikebirds Před 9 lety

RG tron cares about 7. Blue tron is entirely happy with 8 mana win cons, because you do not win without an early island in play. Platinum emperion is also much harder to destroy, but the flying on angel can sometimes end games on its own

Can anyone tell me why Oboro, Palace in the Sky is necessary in this deck? I am new to modern and want to buy this deck, but $7 basically for an island that can be put back into your hand doesn't seem to relevant for the seven dollar price tag. If anyone could explain I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

11 mana and a blue with academy ruins. Six for mindslaver, 4 to crack mindslaver, take opponents next turn then use 1 a blue and academy ruins to put it on top of your library.

Tolarian I've been playing this deck on Untap.in for the past week and I am loving it. I'm sad it isn't as budget as it was when this video was made, but it's certainly still budget. I just feel like I gain complete control over my opponent (sometimes, I do!) and when I come online, they go offline for good. 10/10 amazing feel to it.

Do you have a video that describes what is meant by terms like "tron" and other words that are used in deck names?

    • @chrisevans6293
      @chrisevans6293 Před 5 lety

Andrew Laverghetta Tron uses the Urza lands when the three are simultaneously in play they make 7 mana. “Tron” refers to the cartoon robot Voltron, where a bunch of smaller robots combined to make Voltron. The deck revolves around a bunch of tutor cards that find the Urza lands so that you can put them together by turn 3-4 and play a really powerful and mana expensive creature early in the game like Karn or Wurmcoil Engine
