- Previous hot hatch comparison winners take-on the new Renault Megane RS 280 on the road
The Ford Focus RS was the quickest on our track test but now we want to know which of these five hot hatches is the best road car - the hot hatch that delivers on all fronts, including the cost of ownership and value for money. The Hyundai i30 N is a good all-rounder, the Peugeot 308 GTI is a great city car but let's not forget the prowess of the Honda Civic Type R. But really, this test is to see where the new-generation Renault Megane RS 280 fits. Can it win?! Spoiler alert: maybe!

How does the type r wing impede vision if it is soo high in the rear view?
i30N comes with the best warranty, even covers you for track days!
yes, it will need a lot of warranty
Why ?
Yeah because Hyundai is a charity right?
I30 N ,the best sound!
I have a Civic Type R and you can't see the wing at all in the rear view mirror, so I don't understand the comment about rearward visibility.
Megane for me, best looking car, best interior design, best handling, comfortable enough, good sound, automatic transmision available and better fuel economy for allday car.
Such a beautiful road place! just like the civic typeR. ..
CTR wing impedes rear visibility?? Did you actually try driving the car? Can't even see the wing in the rear mirror.
Spot on Evan. They also mention the poor ride quality of the Type R on 20 inch rims. Strange that the type R is universally praised for its excellent ride quality in comfort mode.
Yep, you can say a lot about that spoiler, but not that it gets in the way of the rear visibility. Same goes for the 'this is my favorite shift' comment on shifting in the new Megane. It's such a shitty shift, yes it's short, but it's the least precise of any of these cars by far and half the time you are in doubt if it's already in gear or not.
It doesn't even come close to the Type R which has the best shift in here. It dooesn't even come close to the second least good shift of the Peugeot.
Also, this RS Cup costs about the same as a Type R in GT spec. How is Renault thinking to find any buyers for a 1.8l with no addaptive dampers, when people can get a 2.0l with 300hp for the same price or a 2.0l with 275 hp with adaptive dampers for A LOT less money?
Agreed guys. The look of the car has grown on me (Iâve got it in black which hides much of the troubling bits) but itâs still pretty wild. I look at it like a tarmac rally car and that helps me sleep at night.
Ride, seating & primary controls are expertly judged even held against a much higher level of car. And I think the reason some criticize it for not being as playful is that itâs setup for real stability on bigger faster tracks, not smaller / chuck it around type tracks.
Comparing reliability and performance i would go for Civic Type R any day. RS maybe the faster and more aggressive car however they are also known to have engine block issues
Typical Aussie review, most of them wpuld like to roll on a hyundai!!! Lol!!!
I30n baby! Imagine they tested the performance version. Why didn't they by the way?
That is the performance version. Australia doesn't get the base version at all
They did
i30n for me! its got enough power and torque for a sporty drive...most important its very good for daily use
Many reviews say the 4ws of Megane is confusing and unsettling, hard to anticipate
Happy with the focus RS.. Can't handle CTR looks.. Others not sold in US or too slow.. I drove a renault megane 265R before (2014) and it was pretty amazing
I30N đȘđȘđȘđȘ
If it's a hoot to drive, it has to be the Pug then. No point in feeling sick in a car with a rough ride.
Got the Type for a year now and I have to say it's probably the best car that has ever made beneath 50.000 euro (I live in Europe). This car has realy got it all. My mate has got an Hyundai I30N for a month. So we traded our cars for the weekend. Although I have to say the I30N is a great car, it's also miles away from the level of the Type R. In almost every driving aspect the Type R is better and more focused as the I30n.
But the type r is hideous
Well I own a Megane GT and can't fault it. I would not be seen in Hyundai, and face it, as good as the i30N might be, it is still a Hyundai and looks just like the other 1 million of them on the road.
I thought the R in Type R stood for Ridiculous, itâs looks block out a segment of the market and cost blocks out another, i30n is the car for me and yes the performance version is the better car, the only option we get in Australia đ
Hyundai or Focus RS for me. The Civic Type R is way too hideous to ever want to drive.
Hyundai to d đ đđż
Am i the only one noticing that motoring has always favoured the i30n whereas all other australian reviews favor the type r for its all around package? Heck, its already won numerous car of the year awards
Hyundai are probably sponsoring the review. You can always tell when they compare every insignificant detail to the current class leader (in this case, the Type R)
The FRS is by far the most fun to drive of these cars. Its the only one that feels rwd and can power oversteer.
I'd agree until I drove the RS.
hyundai!
well ok, they are all good BUT wait till the megane rs TROPHY start the engine đ uh can't wait to see the trophy...
But at what price?
Honda Civic Type R
Unfortunately, we North Americans only have a choice of two of these cars. And the Focus RS has already ceased production. So here in the US, the Civic Type R wins this particular comparison by default.
Itâs a pity and youâre missing out; the French manufacturers are doing some great stuff at the moment.
We have the Hyundi Veloster N so not sure what you are talking about
The Veloster N is what Americans get in place of the i30N. But it's not in the same class by any means.
Is Veloster N on the market now ??
In Australia all the people want is value for money, that's the only reason the i30n wins.
If you watched the video, you might realise that the i30N offers much more (value for money is just the icing on the cake).
Perhaps the good people of Australia want to drive their cars everyday, not own "garage queens", so they want usability....
@@MrBenHaynes The Honda is the best Machine.
I differ in opinion. The Hyundai is the most cohesive package. The Honda's aesthetics are polarising (Astro boy comical really)
Yeah true, but the I30n is $12000 cheaper than the type R. You could buy a import early model type R civic/integra for that and have two great cars.
Yeah let's just pay way more money for something which is only a fraction better instead of getting the best value car.....Genius
M140i
Type R, too hot
Hyundai for me
Lame
The honda is overstyled
That is the understatement of the century!
Don't care if it could cook me breakfast, with those looks, it (subjectively) will never be a contender.
Golf GTI/R
Civic Type R is probably the best car overall but it's just so ugly....
Clear, Hyundai-sponsored Road Test Comparison
Where's the Cupra? đ
No Seats are sold in Aus
@@FATALDEATHZ gutted
i30N is way overpriced and just screams cheap and tacky to me. In a year or twos time these Megane RS will be incredible value.
Wankers hahaha havenât got a clue
still producing Hyundai ads
Australian donât know anything about cars, canât even review and choose the right cars to compare! Where is bmw, Audi, Mercedes?!
@multan rasuli : because in Australia you donât get any comparable Audi, Merc, or BMW for A$40-50k.. Perhaps they should have left the Focus RS out (great on a track, but too hard to live with as a daily driver) and included a Golf GTi instead - although that may have been left out because VW Australia no longer offers a manual.
@@rotoehu9266 Or maybe the Focus ST instead of the RS.
Those cars dont last on our roads.
@@cater4anytink45 My Audi RS3 cost more than your house, and my house cost more than your street. đ
@@waleedkhan7623I'm from Birmingham England and born here..where ever you live is probably not you country of birth..why you even pipe up for you should be cooking,or driving your uber taxi..every car you've had you probably used in whiplash compo claim.. type r,focus rs where the only cars better than I30n
You fail terribly, A45 AMG wins by a mile over these lame cars
Only to be slaughtered by the rs3
its $80000 here , taxed $18,000
Nonsense. The A45 and RS3 have Haldex AWD. Pfffffttt
LOL you guys picked a Hyundia as the winner? They are garbage and that car will flop if and when it comes to the states. Hyundia is considered cheap cars here in the states. I would of picked any of the other 4 cars.
Considered? Time to stop living life according to people's standards but your own
Thanks for the spelling correction. Much appreciated. Iv'e owned 2 Hyundia's in my life and they are garbage! Not because others have told me this but because I have first hand experience. Choice between those cars that are all around the same price point the Hyundia will be the last one picked here in the states.
@@DenonDJTony different markets I guess. They are outselling Hondas and Ford's in the European countries
Yeah they get different models and IMO better models then we do here in the states. I think because we are considered a rich country, we get the shitty products.
@@DenonDJTony lol I doubt having the Camry as an exclusive is aiming for rich people
