    2 things. First, the context of the nudity is important within Tolkien's work, because the nudity is innocent and non-sexual, when it is almost guaranteed to be sexual in the show. Second, there is a difference between seeing something and reading something.

    • @MaMastoast
      @MaMastoast Před 2 lety +5

      I don't have a problem with nudity at all, but I actually do think LOTR is an example of a world where sexual tones in general isn't very fitting.. It's all very romantic and epic.. but very far from sexual... It just wouldnt fit the tone of the universe very well.

      @MaMastoast Před 2 lety +1

      @@nathanielroffel4304 I mean I have to disagree with your premise that having sexual content means that it is pornographic... I think it's perfectly fine to have sexual content and I don't think portraying people having sex is inherently pornographic.
      I don't know where you are from, but I find that many americans are taught to be afraid of nudity and have a very different view of nudity in media than I do... I grew up in the 90's where Danish films(I'm danish :P ) would often have casual nudity and semi-sexual content for films ment for kids.. It wasn't pornographic or a big deal..
      To me, it is all about the tone of the universe.. sex is appropriate for a world that is grounded and is ment to feel relateable... Tolkien is epic and grand..fantastical.. it's like folklore.. so having things like sex would feel off.

    • @nathanielroffel4304
      @nathanielroffel4304 Před 2 lety +4

      @@MaMastoast I agree. And yes, I do agree that nudity is not always sexual or pornographic, but the ways that the potential nudity has been presented are similar to that of GoT, which, at times, is extremely pornographic. There is a time and place for nudity, tasteful or not (depending on one's perspective), but I agree with you that this is not the place.
      Hypersexualization is a scourge on popular media, and it should have no place in this universe, because it is not a component that was ever important to the story. Yes there are intimate relationships in LotR, but the intimacy is not focalized on sex or sexuality, which runs completely counter to modern North American culture. Sex, in a lot of ways, isn't even seen as intimate anymore, which means it has even less of a reason to be there, considering that LotR is about platonic intimacy, friendship, and love

    • @MaMastoast
      @MaMastoast Před 2 lety +1

      @@nathanielroffel4304 Hmm I think game of thrones has elements of both non pornographic sexual content and clearly pornographic sexual content.. We may differ in opinion here, but as an example;
      I think the scene of Danaerys being raped by kharl drogo is clearly explicit and sexual but I wouldn't call it pornographic.. it has a good reason to be there and helps us understand the characters and the kind of world we find ourselves in
      On the other hand, the scene with one of the sand snakes pressing her tits up against the prison bars with the camera lingering on her body is obviously pornographic.
      My perception of american culture is that they seem to be very much ashamed of it, something to hide and something as innocent as a nude body should be kept away from kids ect... at the same time there is obviously also the sexualisation you mentioned going on.. And I think the two inform eachother.
      But yea, think you struck a nail with regards to intimacy.. LOTR is full of it, close bonds and relationships.. be it romantic or friendly.. It's more on an a existential level rather than physical.. Similarly we wouldn't expect a long torture scene in LOTR; and while we can certainly imply that torture happens.. it's more about the dread rather than gore.

  • @ChickenNugNugz2
    @ChickenNugNugz2 Před 2 lety +330

    I think the point about nakedness is really important though, they got a laugh but honestly it is a big theme in the entire world. This scene illustrates both the innocence of the hobbits and the nature of Tom as the master. Compare that chapter with Homeward Bound in Book 3 and the particular loss of innocence of Frodo but really all of the hobbits.
    Non-sexual love and acceptance, a brotherhood that drew these hobbits, then men, elf and dwarf as close as family is the central theme of the story. Our society these days look at that and say it has to be sexual and homoerotic, the depiction of Aragon's masculinity, the devotion Sam has to Frodo and the love Frodo has for Sam back Gimli and legolas love for each other transcends ancient hatred of each others race.

    I hesitate to say this but... I'm a 56 yr old Native American grandma. I have never seen Lord of the Rings. In my defense I did see The Hobbit, which I loved! I have seen snippets here and there of the LOTR trilogy. I know that beautiful Liv Tyler is in one of the movies. I just never had anyone to watch it with. I need to watch them all. I feel so out of the loop. It's like hearing of Star Wars but only ever seeing A New Hope. This tragedy must not continue! Anybody want to volunteer to watch the Trilogy with me? I don't even have a vcr tape or dvd set to watch. I am of course embarrassed and my mom is just shaking her head from her final resting place.

      Very Old Testament. The Catholic mythologizing of Tolkien is more or less what ruined it for me. Angels and saints: we don't need no stinking Ainur.
      By the by: my father bought the first edition as it came out (fold out maps) and I first read the Hobbit in primary school, LotR by 8th grade. I was a founding member of the Tolkien Society of America and met WH Auden at one of their get togethers. This was before the ACE paperbacks were issued and the exclusivity of the whole world fell apart, but that's not my complaint. LotR is a rousing adventure with mostly 2 dimensional characters in a fight of good against evil. But it's not great literature. Oh, well.

    I wouldn’t sign a petition for no nudity - such as what they described in this interview. What I would have an issue with is breaking from the spirit and intent of Tolkien by adding scenes of nudity and sex just to be edgy and up the ratings. These stories are so rich they don’t need someone adding such scenes with the (false) notion that they’re required to be relevant for today’s audience.

    • @corvus2512
      @corvus2512 Před 2 lety +8

      Honestly, and i agree with you about not adding anything that isnt true to tolkien, but i have no faith in this new series. Its clear when you watch the behind the scenes of the LotR films that what happened was special. Writers who genuinely loved tolkien and a cast who grew to love tolkien got together and made something only they could, it was almost an accident you might say. It wasn't quite repeated in the hobbits due to the studio and we saw what a few “mandates” did to those films, imagine what sorts of mandates a corpo entity like amazon will impose upon this. They will add so many mandates and target demo goals and impositions that the magic of tolkien will be totally stripped away until is just a sterile generic fantasy tale.

    • @sushivision
      @sushivision Před 2 lety

      I think these petitions were a bit paranoid and got ahead of themselves. The series will be about the Second Age, and what storyline within this age can they possibly insert a salacious scene in? I can think of none... Tbh I consider the 2nd Age kinda boring compared to the epicness of the 1st and 3rd Ages, I have no idea why they would pick it to make a series out of.
