Alone at sea is such a strong episode for tackling such a dark issue like abusive relationships. Jasper literally says the things many of the abuser would say like "itll be better this time" or "ive changed" its a dark but good lesson to teach and let people be aware of. After all, malachite represents a toxic relationship
my favorite part of it is tbh... Lapis was the abuser, more or less. she agreed to malachite as a deception, and was the one holding them and keeping them trapped. sure jasper was awful too, but Jasper was the victim more so than lapis. so it's such a fascinating dynamic with all its toxicity and its a darn shame it didn't get expanded on even more
@@tomlialucina2300 Id say they were both abusive. Jasper got trapped sure, but it was only because she was initially trying to use her. Tbh the way she treated Lapis before this (forcibly moving her/trapping her) and the tenacity Lapis has when she traps her points to reactive abuse, aka abused/traumatized into treating the abuser the way they've been treated. Its a good example of why toxic relationships are worse than people make out, because often times the victim ends up using similar tactics simply from repetition and that can carry into future relationships.
@@niccilefevre I appreciate this because until now my brain hadn't fully wrapped around the concept of the label can fit both. like i knew both had their issues but it was seeing that in this use that made it click. i suppose i was talking more so in reference to malachite directly, but you are 100% correct
I think my favorite bond in the show is between steven and lapis. Stevens the first and one of the only people to care about her. So its a wholesome relationship between the two since shes most comfortable around him.
Steven and lapis is probably a #2 bond for me. #1 is either steven and Amethyst or steven and connie
Those are all cool, bit mine has to be Steven and Peridot.
It's always great to see Greg and Rose working on each other and their relationship early on. From what we DO see. Greg is still in his early 20s when he meets her and steven is born when he was 26 so they had about 4-6 years together where they grew up and got mature (greg is 40 right now). I think by the time Steven came around they both would've been lost but mature enough to figure it out and learn. Sadly of course he had to do it on his own but it's great to see how much he matured within a couple of years enough to even raise Steven up until now. It does make it sad that Rose felt incapable of change despite changing the lives of her friends and those around her and especially her dropping her gem knowledge and welcoming in the culture of being a human.
I saw a comment in another video the other day that made me understand everything that Rose did
(this video has been out for 6 months, so I guess I can talk abt some
SPOILERS)
Rose/Pink Diamond saw herself as incapable of change and by her own eyes, worthless. this led to her abandoning everyone in her previous life, hurting the diamonds, Spinel and then the Crystal Gems themselves when she gave up her form for Steven. she saw herself as incapable of changing, despite having changed so much, she felt like she didn't matter to anyone, and then hurt everyone who loved her.
@matheusalvarenga7820
Literally! Just as Pearl said, she didn't understand why Rose wanted to change so bad. She wanted to create life that didn't have a purpose, one that could change and choose its own pawn. The only other way she knew to make life was to take it away, but it was either the earth or herself, and she chose herself.
People want to call her selfish and all these harsh words and don't understand that No One Knew the diamonds would come back. She couldn't go back either to tell anyone or save spinel and lion was missing so she couldnt get bismuth. She didn't know they'd punish a whole group of rose quarts. She was naive and thought they won so she felt safe enough to have a relationship and a child. And she met someone who understood exactly where she was coming from (as close as one could get to a diamond) and felt like she was heard for the first time.
There's a fairly big piece of foreshadowing in Greg the Babysitter.
I would not be surprised to learn that the Crewniverse's intention was to show how Greg's overcoming mortal fears to try to "rescue" baby Sour Cream--a child not even his own--was what first inspired in the mind of Rose Quartz the idea of having Steven, or rather, that maybe Greg was "the one", the first human she could trust to raise a hybrid child when she herself would no longer exist.
BTW, Greg would in all likelihood not have to pay for the boat. Boats for rent are insured, and unless it could be proved that the hole in the hull was due to Greg's negligence, he'd be off the hook.
Alone At Sea may be a dark ep but i am glad the crewniverse made this to teach children about how truly toxic abusive relationships are. Like jasper even says the typical excuses like "i've changed!" Which is exactly what abusers say to their victims in order to keep having control of their victims. It's scary but i think it's important to show this to kids about why we should keep toxic people out of our lives.
In "Greg the Babysitter" we see that Steven inherited Rose's relationship to Funland.
Also that's why Sourcream is my favorite side character...
Meh.
I hope we eventually learn what happened to baby Sourcream.

While Alone at Sea shows Jasper as the villain (for obvious reasons, she's still loyal to Yellow diamond), in the whole Malachite situation it was Lapis who started and kept Jasper against her will for so long. She was completely justified to do what she did to save her first friend, Steven, but what I want to say is that both agreed to fuse, but Jasper was tricked. THERY BOTH ABUSED EACHOTHER while fused: Lapis not allowing Jasper freedom and Jasper trying to fight the fusion and take control with force. Doing this, both of them aren't really mentally well as you can see: Lapis is afraid of Jasper and the ocean because she fought her for so long, and Jasper became dependant on Lapis because of the emotions that she felt for few seconds everytime she managed to take a little control before being shut down again by Lapis, those being freedom and a much greater power than normal for her, which is basically the most important thing for Jasper. That said, Lapis is not a bad person for keeping Jasper trapped at all like I said before! She was justified, but I just wanted to say that both of them are in this condition because BOTH used eachother.
Those two are in my top 5 characters in the show, but DAMN if they are both complicated charachters!
In this episode Lapis directly addresses that she took everything out on Jasper and enjoyed it. I wouldn't say it's entirely painting Jasper as the abuser and Lapis as the victim. My personal belief is that there's history between Jasper and Lapis we haven't seen, that made Lapis get revenge. So at different points in time they were both abusive and abused, and that the relationship's unhealthy on both sides. That is just a headcanon, but from what context the show gives it's fairly believable that Jasper is not innocent.
@@pieflower6419 oh I agree with you, but where did I say that Jasper Is innocent?
â@@ZafferaaronI wasn't quoting you there, I was agreeing with you. Guess I just phrased it a little oddly. It seems like the majority of the fandom think either Lapis or Jasper are 100% at fault when really Garnet summed it up perfectly "those two are really bad for each other."
@@pieflower6419 Oh no i'm sorry I just reread your comment and realized what you said. It's true that Garnet said It perfectly, I never realized how much truth there was in that line
@@pieflower6419I think the point is that in real abusive relationships more often than not both parties harm each other, thereâs often someone who âstarts itâ, jasper in this case, but over time the victim also adopts their abusers tactics in order to have power in the relationship, it creates a rough and complicated situation because the original victim ends up having similar issues as the original abuser, like all relationships itâs a back and forth, but itâs toxic so the back and forth is incredibly damaging for both.
I think the thing most people miss in this episode is that Lapis was actually the one keeping Jasper trapped, not the other way around. She liked using her power to control someone and make them feel like she'd felt, trapped all those years. I love Lapis as a character, but I think a lot of people look at her dainty appearance and Jasper's buffness and think the story here is that Jasper was primarily abusive and Lapis was sweet and innocent.

Alright I'm joining the Patreon
That sounds like a joke I would make
0:40 he can buy Stevonnie some shoes
2:27 i actually would love to see them coming
5:45 despite the horrified reaction and lightning, that is likely a compliment
7:40 we laughed about the "uhh maybe save this for when youre older" but then it wasn't even his
8:10 yeahh he needs more
8:21 the voice
12:07 he really needed to just ask her
10:20 suddenly struck by the realization Sour Cream met Rose
1:42 less of a confidence issue and more of "I've been stuck trying to rein in Jasper and being in charge of malachite, and I don't trust myself with that kind of control anymore because of the implications"
And I really get that. Sometimes refusing control isn't about insecurity, it's trauma.
Fun fact Malachite as a crystal is poisonous when in water
Thatâs a myth. Malachite is no more toxic than a copper pipe.
â@@ritzexists2201So when someone makes a statement like - âMalachite is no more dangerous to get wet than the copper pipes used to bring water into homesâ - make sure to add âwhich depends on the pH of your water and how long it is exposed to the pipe or the malachite.â - Geologist Fred Krone
@@UsrNmTkn good point.

2 great episodes!

Yeah lol
I genuinely, from the bottom of my heart, think the babysitting episode sparked Rose's baby fever. I wonder if Sour Cream knows the power he has. I wonder if he knows that his existence is what ultimately sparked the flames that ended the Era 2 Gem empire for good lol
get ready cause after these 2 the episodes get INTENSE.
