Hetzelfde: This term is used when referring to the same thing or item.
It is more commonly used to indicate that something is the same in nature or characteristics.
Dezelfde: is used when referring to the same person, people, or individuals.
It is more commonly used to indicate that two or more things share the same identity.

You can use both in this case. Hetzelfde is simply less specific, dezelfde refers more specifically to the colors.

Would you please explain the ‘hetzelfde’ usage in this sentence from a Duolingo lesson: Zijn de kleuren hetzelfde? I would think dezelfde should be used, but even in google translators ‘hetzelfde’ instead of dezelfde is used. Thank you for your insight.

Hetzelfde is more in a general sense, dezelfde refers to the colors themselves.
