@@TitaniummanGarage 1998 sportsman 500 4x4 coming along good its all about waiting on parts - but while waiting I picked up a 2000 Suzuki Quadrunner with 867 miles - barn Find in great shape and with that came a Kawaski Mule 1000 package deal - only issue with mule was a broken holder needle for main jet in one carb and broken Main jet - waiting on parts other then that the thing has not seen alot of time running it has been sitting in the barn for years. Should be fun going through it all and just getting everything back to spec. your videos help alot so thanks.

After a very recent motor swap and having to deal with a camshaft and timing chain in my beloved's 95 425 magnum I have gained a bit of insight on these motors.
One very minor issue I have with your otherwise highly informative video, is I dont think shearing the flywheel key for what ever reason would cause the timing chain to jump since the crank timing gear has it's own woodruff key and that gear is retained by the nut on the shaft behind the stator cover. The flywheel and it's key is retained by a second nut outside the flywheel.
You are correct that shearing the flywheel key will toss the ignition timing out the window. Had this happen on a 50hp boat motor once, THAT was an adventure!
The silver links will go out of synch with the marks on the cam gear after so many revolutions and then line up again and then go out again and so on, all while the crank/valve timing stays correct.
I now have a 425 motor on the floor of my shop I will likely rebuild or even upgrade to a 500 per your other video to have as a spare since I have two 425 magnums and would not mind having one ready to go when needed.

Your correct. If I implied that the timing chain jumped..I didn't get my message across correctly. I was telling the viewer to watch the flywheel and if the key sheared off it would throw the timing off. Not the chain. Good luck with the conversion. Its pretty strait forward like a 425 with a little more power.

I got a 2006 scrambler and after I take it out of 4x4 it seems like it's in a low gear (doesn't rev as high) only way iv got it to fix itself was to put it into N and back into 4x4 and then back into 2x4 and that only works sometimes... any ideas what it could be??

Im having a weird problem. Its an 03 500 h.o. idles perfect starts good. But it has a lack of power and hesitates to redline in neutral. I pushed down on the air box which made it run better. Replaced the seal with a used one and put silicone on the snorkel seal to seal it. Helped a little bit. Checked the cam exhaust lobe looks to be the same hieght as the intake lobes. Adjusted the valves too. Put a new carb kit in changed the fuel pump, (pumps better now) put the diaprham needle to middle position and guessed the fuel air setting. Because i forgot to check how many turns out. I notoced i have an exhaust leak at the manifold wbat would you advise i put my focus on to. I plan on replacing the exhaust gaskets.

Sounds like its sucking in air somewhere and running lean. Check air lines to see if they are pinched or bad. Check fuel lines too. They collapse if they are old. 2 and a half turns out on the carb for the setting.

Kind of unrelated question here - do you know if the 500 motors are identical in size and shape as the 425 motors? I’m looking into putting a 500 motor into my 425 magnum since they’re easier to find motors for. Mine keeps skipping timing and destroying valves, and yes I’ve done the chain, valves, and the sprockets are good and tight. Double and triple checked timing.. kind of at a loss so I was wondering about 500 into a 425 swaps.

Try the basics first. Needle and seat in carb. Might be getting too much gas.

LOL, you see black smoke, so that tells ya the timing is the problem?? Hilarious I'm surprised you have anything that works. Ahhh NO, black smoke is rich, either carb or coil ain't putting out at higher rpm's.

Hey ItBseCrioN8, don't be a know-it-all. He fixed it. He had black smoke because fuel was pushing backwards. He was smart enough to figure that out.
