    I entered law school at 31 after serving in military as an enlisted soldier. Got a job at biglaw at 34 when graduated. I was first in class at 3rd tier law school in California. Reason did so well because I was older. Was a huge advantage at law firm as well. Younger new associates were so naive. I communicated well with partners and their clients. Got llm in tax at NYU at 40. Got a federal clerkship at tax Court and then again recruited by biglaw. Bottom line is do well in school and be able to communicate and be likeable. Those are huge traits for a successful practice. Now fully retired this year at 55. Kick ass people.lawyers at 24 are too green and no drive.

    As for me I had a traumatic experience at age 17 ( losing my mother to pancreatic cancer) and I was sexually abused by a close friend of my parents that I trusted shortly after. I became severely depressed and even though accepted to university I was too sick for the the golden opportunity to study . Now much later at age 42 I finally have the opportunity again and entered law school recently

    • @debbee18
      @debbee18 Pƙed 5 měsĂci

      So happy for your second chance! Hope all is going well! I had a traumatic experience too that kept me from going to law school. It was when I was taking a paralegal course in my early 20s. I was so excited about law and told my mom "I'm going to be a lawyer." Her reply was "you can't do that. Lawyers are liars" and those words squashed my dream. I released it as an impossibility for a young Christian who didn't want a profession that required dishonesty. I was young and green with much to be discovered about human nature and character but at that time I allowed my mother's limited experience with lawyers cloud my judgement and vision for my own life. That trauma made me forget even having the conversation with my mother until 10 years later, post bachelors and post masters in Education, I still had a persistent voice on the inside saying there is something more to pursue. When in a conversation with a lawyer the very words mentioned "Juris Doctorate" set off fireworks inside, a eureka of "that's it!" In my naivety I called my mother and told her "I'm going to be a lawyer." But, this time she replied "you'd make a good one!" It wasn't until I told another sister that she reminded me of the conversation I had with my mother 10 years earlier. What changed? She saw my skills of advocacy at work on her behalf and was convinced it was my calling. Although I have intended to "one day" I have still not fulfilled this dream but I know now the time has come to take the leap. I spent this past year taking courses with UNITAR and spent a week in The Hague visiting the ICJ, ICC and other organs of the UN and I met an ICC judge who explained to me the reason why I forgot the first time I had the dream to pursue law - trauma. Obtaining my JD and the work that lies ahead will be my final triumph over trauma. I'm so proud of you!🙌

    I was 31 when I started law school and 34 when I finished. I had been a practicing accountant prior to law school. I went to law school as an academic pursuit and I had no desire to practice law and sacrifice my life on the altar of partnership track billable hours. Instead, I was blessed to get a job as a college professor teaching tax and business law, and getting a JD gave me instant credibility in academia. And last year, at age 57, I was blessed to get an LL.M. in tax. So for me, law school put me on the career path I enjoy to this day. That's my $0.03.

    I started my degree young, like most students. Over the years, I met a number of 30+ year-old students - most of whom were married with kids. As someone who spent most of high school and undergrad hanging out with the 'older' pupils / students, I naturally drifted towards these 30+ students - and I was far better-off for it.
    While many of my younger counterparts often dismissed these older students as 'cynical', I really enjoyed learning about their perspectives on entering the legal services industry. Unlike said younger students, the 30+ students were usually far-more practical, market-oriented and driven. I appreciate those qualities, so being around them has definitely helped me to broaden my outlook.
    Unlike (some) other degrees, where the academics or lecturers are often around that 30-40 age range, most of our lecturers were in the 45+ bracket - and I think that helped our older students to feel less out of place. Where there were 'younger' lecturers however, I did sometimes notice a bit of tension - but only where said lecturers were perhaps approaching the students as if they were in their early 20’s. The latter instances were obviously unnecessary, and I honestly felt a bit unimpressed with how those lecturers handled themselves.

    I'm 39, with 18 years in aerospace and 3 in IT. Until May I had never considered doing this. That changed when I found myself pursuing legal action against an employer for disability discrimination. After spending over 200 hours educating myself for fear of not being able to afford an attorney it dawned on me. I am extremely interested in this and have been helping people get their inquiries filed and evidence organized using my limited knowledge while they try to secure representation.
    Once my case has concluded I may find myself going through an apprenticeship program if I am successful.

    I am currently a 2L enrolled in an evening program at a law school in LA, which means I work a day job and attend classes three days a week after work. As an immigrant from China, English is not my primary language, making the program challenging but manageable. There are difficult moments, such as the last two weeks leading up to finals and deadlines for legal writing assignments. What I like about non-traditional programs is that I can work while attending classes at night, allowing me to pay for law school out of pocket instead of taking out student loans or asking my parents for money. (I received a scholarship that covers 55% of my tuition.) What I don't like about non-traditional programs is that you pretty much miss all the enjoyable aspects of law school. Since you have a day job, you probably won't have time for guest speakers, moot court, student organizations, and other activities that take place on campus, as most of these events occur during the day. Additionally, many prestigious law schools do not offer evening programs at all, so attending an evening program limits your choices. Also, I don't think I'll be able to work for all four years while attending classes, as we have to complete externships or gain experience credits. Just my personal opinion - if you have a choice, try to attend a traditional program.

    She is correct on non-traditional students having a hard time getting a job with a big law firm. If you think about it, both the non-traditional student and the big law employer are right. The older, non traditional student/lawyer is not going to want to deal with the grunt work or a younger managing attorney 's goofiness at big law , and the big law firms just want to grind you down and max out billable hours and not deal with push back from a mature individual who questions the firms methods and operational procedures. It's a better fit to do your own thing or get in with a smaller firm.

But I can absolutely see myself being a real estate attorney one day and stepping into a more corporate type role. I had assumed for a long time that I was simply too old to even bother (I am 48). Hi! I'm definitely not a law school admissions expert, but from speaking with those who are (cough, Anna Ivey, cough), the extracurriculars are much further down the priority list. LSAT, uGPA, and work experience (followed by a compelling personal statement and/or diversity statement) are going to be the absolute strongest ammo in your application.
      If you haven't checked out this video yet I highly recommend it, Anna gives AMAZING advice: czcams.com/video/JLkGlGoub1E/video.html

    I’m a non traditional student (starting law school at 27 and with a family) However, I’m starting law school straight out of undergrad so I got my work experience from 18-23 and not from 23-27. Basically I didn’t have work experience between undergrad and law school but instead, before both of them. I’m not sure how this effects applications, interviews, etc. since my “work experience” isn’t as fresh.

      @AngelaVorpahl  Pƙed 2 lety

      I'm not a law school admissions expert so I can't say for certain, but my sense is that your work definitely still "counts." Basically you're showing them that you are more mature, have had experiences out in the real world/working world that have given you insight into why you actually want to go to law school and who you want to serve as a lawyer, and you'll be more attractive to both the diversity of the student body and legal employers when you start applying for jobs in law school!

      Hi! I love this question because it means you're thinking very intentionally about your decision to pursue law school, and that's fantastic. I'm not a law school admissions expert, but what law schools are going to be most interested in is your personal narrative for the decisions you've made, the reasons you've made them, and how that connects to your desire to pursue law school. So my sense is that starting your bachelor's degree later in life is not a bad thing or a good thing, it's simply an opportunity for you to narrate why law school and why now at this point in your life, and connect the thread for the other decisions that have affected those aspects in your life up to this point. :)

So I have to give the caveat that I only coach with respect to the U.S. law school system since that's the one I personally have experience with, but just in case it transfers to Malaysia as well, I recommend 1Ls getting in 6-8 hours of studying per day, not counting class time (which is usually 2.5-3.5 hours per day). Ok, I will be as brief as possible. I have entertained the notion of possibly going to law school. But here are the facts, I live here in Mississippi, where there are only two law schools - MC Law and Ole Miss Law. I have never considered going to law school before now. Here are some pertinent facts: my undergraduate GPA is 2.6 from Miss. State University. I have obtained three master's degrees since graduating from MSU. First, Master of Science in Management from Belhaven University. Second, an MBA from LSU at Shreveport. Third, a Master of Accountancy from the University of Scranton. Currently, I am enrolled in a WashU to earn a Master of Legal Studies in Regulatory Compliance. Yeah, I know that I am a glutton for punishment with all the schools I have been to. But, if anyone of you have ever been to Mississippi, you would recognize that there is nothing here except poverty and despair. I am 44 years old and married. I have never taken the LSAT. MY QUESTION IS: EVEN THOUGH MY UNDERGRADUATE GPA IS WEAK. STILL, WITH WILL ALL THESE MASTER'S DEGREES I HAVE EARNED HELP SHOW THE ADMISSIONS COUNCIL HOW HARD I WORK, OR DOES THE ADMISSISSION COUNCIL STRICTLY LOOK AT UNDERGRADUATE GPA?

    • @AngelaVorpahl
      @AngelaVorpahl  Pƙed 2 lety +3

      Hi Colin, good question. I'm not a law school admissions coach, but my friend Anna Ivey is a wonderful one and what she says is that the law school will always consider your uGPA in admissions decisions because it's part of how law schools are "ranked" by U.S. News and World Report.
      That being said, you can absolutely write an "addendum essay" explaining the master's degrees you've gotten since undergrad, the GPAs you've gotten with those degrees, and make a compelling case that the master's degrees you've obtained are much more representative of your maturity and academic abilities than your undergraduate degree X years ago.
      I definitely recommend checking out her take on this question and other common law school admissions questions in the video we made, here: czcams.com/video/JLkGlGoub1E/video.html

    Just as a reminder. The population in most western countries overall is getting older and older by proxy mostly due to the advancements of modern medicine and the declining birth rates in western countries. The fact is that more mature ppl will have to work on and so it is very realistic to assume it’s a natural consequence that we as more mature folks ( I’m a 46 year old female w/prior college degrees, speaking more than 3 languages fluent, living in the US making my money working in a second career as a manual therapist, ( despite my prior college degrees which I have not earned close to equivalent to my last earned associates degree in my mid thirties
) OF COURSE we are capable, of course we would bring so much to the table
however
unless the ‘culture’ changes, likely it’s gonna be significantly harder, if not mostly impossible. Law is the culture around law not being anymore a pure altruistic sense made career. The house of law is not a place of justice. When societies and systems are not build upon true values of truth and justice to bring to its ppl ( regardless of $$$) than what is a law worth at all?
    If a society does not form upon significant values agreed upon than the writing of any law is doomed to begin with. And no law can take place in any society that does not follow the first law of all. Which are base pillars of sense and order.
    We we are ready to face reality than things can progress, rehabilitate.
    However just as in any common space of society
health care, housing, education, foreign and domestic politics
the US has really nothing to show for itself.
    Mind you Americans who do not regularly travel around the world wouldn’t have a single insight

    The ‘American Dream’ was and is a generated ‘Fantasia’
and if the States were all that empire like thing then let me assure you to state the facts of history. Most empires did not last loooong. And ALL empires fell. They did thrive at it’s peak but always came from extortion and greed, build on compromising any natural and logical senses, innate to us humans, we could do different, BUT
somehow we are stuck just repeating the same story over and over. Doomed and dooming all and everything around us.
    I don’t long for a god, a higher anything to get out of my own self. I don’t matter and yet we all matter. Collectively we do harm. Most to one another. But on the greater scale we truly mess up this planet. And along us we seem to ruin anything amongst.
    Most times I want us to solve the problem. But even more times I come to understand we ARE our own biggest enemy and dragging everything down with us.
    It must have been a great divergence when the evolution of the homo Homo sapiens started at the same time the Blue planet erupted out of the universe. May it be fait or may it be faith, in the end we must as humans go away and not exist anymore to save this planet.
    Everything in nature is connected is inadvertently necessary to give room and space and nourishment to most anything else. Except us. We are perpetuate in self destructing and along ( based off of delusions) destroying the very environment that gave us life. It’s on every level bewildering. Why even have a brain so big and a conscience and a soul and mind and heart and understanding so much, when at the same time being your own cause of total destruction?
    May the force be with us fallible humans, as I know most any one single person is not bad. We do what we do. Again and again. Over and over. But as a whole we are showing up looking STUPID. Like we can even wrap our ‘perceiving minds’ around the least simple concepts of self preservation.
    It’s NOT greed. It’s NOT war. That ever answer to our forthcoming short comings. Certainly also isn’t any story of the Kumbaja version.
    Ya’ll behold yourself, try to be chill and at any cost control your emotions and know that thinking isn’t knowing.
