Cardi B‘s show-stopping gown at the 2024 Met Gala was definitely a conversational piece, and now the narrative surrounding the dress has changed a bit.
The global superstar caught flack for forgetting the name of the designer who created the fashion masterpiece, while speaking on the garden-esqué carpet. The dramatic black ensemble was designed by Chinese seamstress Sensen Lii who owns the fashion brand, Windowsen. But due to commotion caused by the larger-than-life dress, Cardi claimed her “mind was racing” and she forgot how to pronounce the designer’s name.
The 31-year-old spoke with Vogue where she was asked the expected question of “Who made this?”
“I feel amazing,” Cardi started before seemingly struggling to remember the designer’s name. “It’s this amazing designer. They’re Asian and everything.” However, her lack of remembrance helmed much backlash for her.

As a designer and knowing how hard it is just to get to the making stage without an opportunity falling through, I would be heartbroken if this happened to me…especially if the dress was just ‘paid’ for through exposure.
I agree that this has created more attention for the designer, but it doesn’t mean that it wasn’t disrespectful of cardi to not only forget the designer but also make up excuses instead of apologizing

I’m glad this conversation happened amongst the fashion community vs the general public. This happened to me before and people don’t don’t the heartbreak of people wanting to know about your work and the person displaying it doesn’t say your name. But cardi has a major issue with accountability in the first place.

Cardi just saying the designer is “Asian and everything” and not saying Sensen’s name which is literally only three syllables in total is so cringe to watch 🫢 Her dress wasn’t even on theme so the whole thing was a hot mess from top to bottom in my opinion.

@@dasanii2467 In my opinion, if she knows how to pronounce Belcalis, Sensen shouldn’t be difficult to pronounce either. It’s the same argument that happened when Quvezhané Wallis was nominated for an Oscar and no one took the time to pronounce her name correctly, but Zach Galifianakis we can say just fine? She’s being racist, it’s just that because she’s an Afro Latina woman being racist towards an Asian man, people aren’t taking it seriously.
There’s a difference between a true fashion girlie who involves themselves directly into the fashion processes and is also a muse for other designers …. versus someone who has a stylist that does everything for them. Belcalis is the second person.
I think what a lot of people forget about fashion is that the richest people get to wear the most expensive dresses for free. But in these settings, our only payment IS the exposure.
That many metres of good quality fabric can cost thousands. The hours of work from a huge team would be worth thousands too.
Too often people expect to get art for free and they devalue our craft by suggesting its "easy" or "enjoyable" so the work doesn't deserve to be paid for. When in reality, the team would be working overtime and pulling allnighters to custom make a masterpiece for you so you can look your best.
If you don't credit a designer for free work, you didn't pay them. Simple as that.

She just turned it around and gaslighted her audiences. Yeah all the king’s horses and all the king’s men worked hard to procure and style the dress. But u are the face of the dress, and all u had to do was to know who the designer was. Don’t give that Cardi BS n take some accountability.
apparently she was supposed to wear balenciaga but that didn’t pan out so it was kind of last minute. this only proves to me that kollin(her stylist) is the one creating her fashion moments.

She obviously needs a mentor in her camp who can help her understand how and why to avoid mistakes like this. I understand what she is trying to say but how she said it was pretty janky. Not to mention this is proof of a narcissistic streak a mile wide. Moments like that is not all about the individual. That is a team effort. But... She's 31. There is still time to pull it together, if she is open to being an emotionally intelligent person. That most often comes with age.
I think you expect from Cardi too much...after watching and listening to her for years I just do not get why you are surprised at all, after all she is showing us for years what she is, as I heard a ticket for the gala costs 75 grand and often payed by the brand the celeb is wearing, I wonder if the brand payed for the ticket- if so they should ask for the money back!

People keep trying to defend her and it really is indefensible. When Nicki Minaj was rude about her dress people castigated her for it (and I say this as someone who genuinely can't stand the woman). It's as much a designer's night and it is the person wearing their design.
The hours they spent, just for someone to have to remember they liked Cardi's dress enough to willingly look up who she wore. Money, time, exposure, all gone. Ironically her forgetting that name fit the 'ephemeral' theme.

I don't think it's that big a deal overall; but here's the thing. Cardi B has met with Mugler, she's met Donatella, she's met Gaultier.
So at some point, you get the idea that she understands designers and how important their work is to them. People are upset because she seems to have disregarded the designer this time.
I can't entirely blame her for not knowing the ins-and-outs of every look she wears; but the whole thing just looks a little classless. Not a something worthy of being publicly hanged for though. There are more serious things going on in the world than Cardi B's dress
