  • In this video I react to DKDTV's explanation of BTS UGH. After this being heavily suggested in the comments section I really wanted to take a deeper dive into the meaning behind the song.
I have to REALLY give these guys credit as it seems that when they create, they draw from so many cultural references and nuances much like lyricist in hip-hop would, to convey double/triple meanings and a strong message.

You‘re right, they have nuts to say these stuff.
But i‘m very happy they do, because they have such a big platform and so many people listen to them.
Rm once said, that someone have to say it, and why not BTS. (This was in the ONE good American Interview which was really about their music, because most of the American-interview are like „which is your favorites english word?“ or „with which American artist you want to collaborate?“ -you see the problem here)
Also Suga in one of their documentaries mentioned that he feels like when he now started making music that have nothing to say and is just for success, this success became meaningless.
And BTS have really a talent talk about real things, Society, depressions etc and make it sound like the biggest hit.

Online hate needs to stop - it's just wrong to do that to another human being. In Korea there have been actors and artists that due to online hate have committed suicide as well as others that aren't famous that have been so hurt and wounded by that type of bullying that that they too killed themselves. How sad and tragic that people would be so mean to others to cause them that severe pain. My favorite quote, "In a world where you can be anything, be KIND."

This is really relevant. Many people are using the protests to express their rage that has nothing to do with the protests. There is a fear they will co-opt the protests and BLM movement will get weakened because the public won’t be able to see the difference sometimes. The violence is mostly coming from that unfocused rage. Unfocused rage is not productive but BLM rage is very focused and could and will become productive in making change if they can keep their movement focused. The virus and political situation in the US bring out the unfocused helpless rage. HopefullyBLM movement can push through and not give up. The change that can be made from their movement will make positive change for all people not just Black people.

There are very few BTS songs that are not my favorite when I first hear it but later I realize I needed those lyrics at the right time. It absolutely frustrates me when most of Kpop outsiders try and box BTS into a Kpop category only and as some kind of weird ass fad. If people would only do a little more research, read actual correct translations of their lyrics, watch a little of their reality series and listen to a bit of their extensive discography- they would definitely KNOW WHY BTS are popular and dearly loved by the fans. They come across very natural, down to earth to me. I know what most people would say about that but honestly the guys come across as genuine. Something that is seldom evident in the industry. Perhaps it was their humble beginnings that made them more appreciative of their blessings presently.

I am also so frustrated when everyone stereotypes them as "some men being liked by little girls" and don't even spend 2 sec to understand that the reason their fans are so attached to them is bcz they write songs like these and not like other groups who either don't write their own stuff or just keep releasing songs that are catchy but meaningless.

    NICE REACTION!
BTS is very well known for their beautiful and meaningful lyrics.
    .
BTS is also famous as social messengers. They voice social issues through their lyrics. UGH is one of them. Others are SPRING DAYS, SPINE BREAKER, BAEPSAE, LOEDER THAN BOMB. Some of these songs have the explained videos made by many ARMYs with various versions of interpretation.
    .
    Particularly for SPRING DAY:
This song has A LOT of references to the national tragedy of Sewol Ferry in Korea. The MV and the lyrics have a lot of hidden and metaphoric meanings about the tragedy. As that tragedy happened in Korea and was slightly "covered" by the government as it was full with corruption case in the government, it is hard for us, the international listeners, to understand some context.
    .
BTS had the gut to speak up through the song using symbolical/hidden meanings. BTS themselves never admit about this reference. They stayed silent since this case was very sensitive and critical. Government will blacklist those who give donations to the victims' families.
    .
Although we never got any confirmation from BTS or Bighit, my point is that BTS had balls to release the song during the time period that this issue was still politically sensitive, thus easily risking their career.
    .
To fully understand and appreciate this song, you need to watch the Explanation Video by Bulletproof Vibes. BTW.
    .
This song never leave the chart since it was released because it is loved by many people particularly the victims' family. Army calls it THE QUEEN of all BTS songs, while Suga calls it THE ZOMBIE that never dies.

In DKDKTV DKDK stands for Danny Kim and David Kim. They are not brothers though they have the same surname. Im BTS 3 of the guys have the surname Kim (Kim Seokjin, Kim Namjoon and Kim Taehyung) because Kim is the most common surname in Korea, just a little FYI. Also in Korea you put the surname first when you wright or say peoples name just so you know when you see or hear the members full name.
BTW Kim Namjoon (RM) has an IQ of 148.

wow, i really really like your reaction to this video! normally a lot of reactors watch the lyric video and might make a few comments about how good the lyrics are and not really contribute much else. but on top of watching a video that explains the lyrics in a cultural context, you gave a really nice commentary on it. it was really nice to hear your own opinions, appreciation for the lyrics and interpretation (and bts' musical style), social commentary, and the way that you related what dkdktv was saying to real life situations - even though none were explicitly mentioned in the original lyrics. ugh! is a really great song - catchy, but makes you think about what is actually being said. other songs like this (that other armys here have mentioned, lol) are baepsae (aka silver spoon), ddaeng, am i wrong, go go, earlier songs like n.o., and namjoon's collab with wale called change. this is the first video i've seen from you so i'm not sure how well versed you are with the lyrics to these ones. nice video :)

Loved your thoughtful and intelligent discussion about this song and it's themes. I like DKDKTV anaylsis of BTS songs because he understands both the Western and Korean perspectives in songs and can explain it in a coherent way. They don't do every BTS song though. Here are 2 other sources for lyric analysis that can help if you continue to delve into the music of BTS. For a handful of Idol era songs - CZcams channel Minidance and in blog form Muish's Ramblings on Wordpress - here is the link to her take on this song muish.wordpress.com/2020/03/06/bts-ugh-english-translation-and-ramblings/
BTS has never since their debut shyed away from making songs that have a social commentary and even critical . The rap line attacks straight on but other songs with edgy messages are often packaged as very catchy upbeat songs but have scathing lyrics. Examples - Baepsae, GoGo , No More Dream and NO.
So RM has a genius IQ - like 148. RM is genius at wordplay in both Korean and English and between the two languages. There songs are deep, often clever, full of double meanings and cultural references. Things like novels by Herman Hesse, and Jungian psychology show up as well as interesting sciencey things like a whales who call at wrong frequencies and Pluto being demoted as a planet. It is impressive and smart.

Thank you for digging deeper to this song. Many just listen to it and say it's a good song but does not really put into account what it really means or what it implies and I'm ok with that. But, I just find reactors who try to understand their songs' meanings more enjoyable to watch since I know you are taking them seriously and not just using them for click bait. Wish you more subs.

Hi! I love your reactions because you try to understand the song and even give your opinions. Since you’ve discovered DKDKTV and listened to ON, you should also watch DKDKTV explanation on ON. The song is based on Carl Jung’s (a psychiatrist who found a new branch in psychology called analytical psychology) theory. Well, the album “Map of The Soul” is based on Carl Jung’s book called Map of The Soul ☺️. I have learned so much since i started stanning bts & learn their music, not only about lessons that helped me love myself & others, seeing beyond stereotypes, but also things like psychology theory, Korean literature, Korean Culture and history, even stories about Greek God (Dionysus which is also their song title). You may have seen this in so many comments, but BTS is so versatile, you are already blown away of how different boy with luv and mic drop are. You’ll be even more surprised as you discover more 😂

Thank you so much for reacting to the explanation by DKDKTV and for sharing your insight! Ive learned a lot from this reaction 🙌
But just a bit more context, the lyrics "someone's action sometimes costs a life" for me has a much deeper reference. You see, just around 2017 up until 2019, there has been a number of idols that passed away due to s*icide. It has been very hard for them for the longest time, and I really appreciate that BTS touched on this topic because it is also relevant to the current kpop industry. The amount of hate that these idols get from k-netizens is just insane, like to the point that these idols decided to end their lives. 😭😭 How many more kpop idols or celebrities out there receive so much reckless or useless hate that they might be considering those negative thoughts. Again, to anyone reading this, take care of your mental health AND please do not send malicious hate on anyone if it will harm others and its not actually for a good cause. Take care yall. 💜🙏

Hi! Glad YT led me to your channel. I really appreciate your thoughts. Will be subbing. As the other fans are saying, this is why we international fans end up learning so much about Korean culture... BTS' lyrics are deep and they definitely incorporate their culture not only that way but also in their vids, choreography, performance staging, etc.
P.S. BTS are brave... They've used their artistry to call out politicians and other prominent figures. So if you ever see those write-ups about them being a 'safe' 'boy band' you'll know the writer knows nothing about their career.

I'm sure you're getting swamped with requests but I'll throw my 2 cents in. I think you would like Intro: Persona, Interlude: Shadow, and Outro: Ego in that order. These are the 3 solo's from the rappers on their most recent album. They are introspective pieces, basically discussing the dark side of fame, their fears, and the journey of finding themselves. (Also D2, Suga's newest mixtape is FIRE. My fav album released so far this year. Worth a listen.) Looking forward to the next one :)

Great reaction video! I love to see people intelligently approach genius lyrics. I haven't seen vary many of your videos yet. (I'm going to subscribe as soon as I finish this comment.) I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned about their music video connections or not. But if you thought that their lyrics are deep, just wait until you realize that they have an ongoing alternate universe storyline (Bangtan Universe or BU for short) that has been in their music videos since almost the beginning. It has spawned a whole bunch of renewal into art and literature and a subculture in ARMY of investigator ARMYs, ARMY theorists, and so on. There are some highly intelligent ARMYs out there, helping the rest of us get more out of the lyrics, music videos, and the BU. If someone has already mentioned all this - sorry for the repeat.🙏 But, like I said at the beginning... great reaction, keep up the awesome work!
