Should you buy a 2021 or 2022 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro?

- In this video I showcase several mods I installed on my 2021 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro. Ranging from Nitto Ridge Grapplers to a Diamondback HD bedcover (full build list below).
With the new 2022 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro being revealed later today, I wanted to take a few minutes to talk through my thoughts on how this “old” 2021 stacks up. Do I have a bias? Yes. However I am still excited to get my hands on a 2022+ sometime soon. Whenever we complicate the engines with turbos… and smaller displacement, it leaves room for greater issues to arise.
This trusty 5.7L V8 is dated and thirsty but man, I have never worried about it’s ability to start up and get me to where my family and I need to be. The fact that this is the last and only time this particular generation will see the lunar rock color also adds some style points in my book.
What are your honest thoughts of the 2022? Do you think it’ll be a clear winner in every regard? Which are you aiming for?
Thanks for watching as always!

Recently traded my 2018 f150 for a 2020 tundra. I got so sick of the problematic annoying add ons in all new trucks the tundra was the only option that still kept it simple. No auto start stop, no turbos, no cylinder deactivation, no crazy transmission with too many gears. Just a simple honest pickup and I love it for that.
Well said! I agree 100% =]
Less is more these days.
YOU FUNNY
110% agree.
Well said I agree too!! The best truck , no issues;;
never leave comments, but this convinced me to get a 2021 Tundra TRD Pro...love the simplicity, straight forwardness, and information that's extremely helpful...thank you! enjoy that truck until the wheels fall off
Honestly I hope the 22 are a smashing success. That way I can pick up a pre-21 model that folks will be trading in. I dont need the latest and greatest and the track record of those is excellent. Truck looks great man.
I hope so too. I love Toyota… so I don’t want to see the company flop on anything. Nor do I think they will… thanks man!
It’s going to have the opposite effect. People will be SEEKING out the 2021s because the V8 is better than the V6. 2021s will be insanely expensive. Think land cruiser effect
dont do that. that's my plan.
I’m looking to do the same. Hope everyone buys the 2022 so I can get a freshly traded in 2021.
Buy a 2018 or older that actually have a transmission cooler
I love the diamondback hard cover! Great idea installing the rack on top. I love those Wheels and Tires! This is such a sharp looking Tundra! Congrats! 👍👍
Picky about powertrains, and I think the 5.7 V8, 6 speed auto, and TRD Pro exhaust is just about the best powertrain combo of anything I have ever driven for it's intended purpose. Better than the 8speed in the LC, and love hearing the V8 sound out the TRD exhaust...perfect tone and loudness! Great list of mods! Enjoy!
I agree 100%
You can’t go wrong wrong with this rugged and tested setup! Thanks man.
The sound of the TRD exhaust is amazing but try towing with the damn thing for 12 hours on the highway while it’s constantly downshifting to 3000-3500 RPMs and the sound reverberating off the trailer. It gets all real quick. With the 6 speed it definitely needs more power to hold lower gears longer.
Can i install trd pro exhaust on my sr5 tss 2021 ?
Getting mine this week. I can't wait 😁. Thanks for your videos!
Best wheel and tire combo out there for the Tundra. Tough skins decals looking rad AF too man, great job!!
I agree!! Thanks man.
Did you consider red trd and black pro tuff skins logo. I have a white pro trying to decide. Awesome truck!
@@stevehassell3477 I did. I like the simplicity of two tones. But I think the red would be more fitting on a white Tundra… you can’t go wrong.
So happy to see the Tundra making a comeback to your family.
Not sure if you mentioned the tailgate locking mechanism or not, but Toyota sells an OEM kit to install and be able to lock the gate with your fob. I did install the aftermarket one on mine, which I bought before toyota came up with their plug and play one, and it works great.
I don't like the 2022 exterior and I prefer the simplicity of the current 2021 interior. It's proven to be capable, reliable, and I feel it can outlast a 2022 with its turbo engine and all of its tech glory.
Love the mods you did on this one! Great looking truck. Does kinda look “old school “ compared to the new one. But that’s a good thing In my book.
Some really tasteful mods here. Will be saving this video for sure 🔥
Appreciate it man, thanks!!
These just look so much better than the new ones.
Your house and truck are both beautiful! You are very blessed. Thanks for sharing.
I’ve been waiting so long for the lunar rock combo! All is right in the universe 😂
Haha amen to that! =]
It looks so badass with the 295s and the DiamonBack cover! Nice truck man🤘
I appreciate it brother, thank you!
If I can suggest a mod that I promise you will love is Tuxmat floor mats. I have a 2019 white TRD pro and every time someone gets in my truck it’s the first thing they make a comment on. I was very hesitant to buy them because not many people talk about them. But they are fire !!
I’m glad you got another tundra, your videos have helped me a lot and I was disappointed when you rid of it. Thank you for your videos
Great Video!! Love the color. Now I’m thinking of going to that from my 2018 TRD Sport. Honestly 2020 -2021 they had more options ,and with the TRD pro they’ve got more options and leather seats!
Glad you decided on taking the advice and did the front windshield. I actually did 50% on my windshield on my 2021 super white 4Runner TRD Pro. I also did 15% on the driver and passenger side and 35% over the factory tint on the rest of the windows to match.
Awesome man! Yeah this makes a huge difference. Definitely keeps the cabin cooler during the hot days. Super glad I went this direction.
Tundra is looking great 👍. I love my 21' MGM Pro. To me there is a great appeal in the tried and true nature of this drivetrain and it's proven track record. I also like the simplicity of this truck because, after all, it's A
TRUCK! I didn't need a 14" screen, backup assist, 360 view, AC in the seats, or even crawl control (most of my friends with Tacos don't even use it!).
I would highly recommend the full Westcott lift to eliminate any rub with those meats. Would make it worry free for when you you get off road. Thanks for the cool vids 😁
Beautiful truck! I had a lot of the same custom upgrades on my tacoma including that Diamondback cover unfortunately I couldn't live with the engine transmission and traded it in for a old dated 2020 GX460 two years ago and don't regret it. And I agree with the point with the turbo and I have a deposit for a 2022 Cayman with the N/A engine!
Those side steps are killer🤙🏾
I went with the Go Rhino steps based on your army green pro, love them! I see a westcott designs lift for the front and coachbuilder +3 shackles in the future for you. 😬
I bought a 21 TRD Pro in LR, again thanks to your videos. I plan to keep it but I will watch the 22 TRD Pro. So far I do like it’s red interior and features but the exterior depends on the color.
Biggest issue with the 22 TRD Pro I see is it won’t be released until next Spring, it’ll be pricey, and it’ll be low availability. If I happen to find one and I like it I’d buy it, but if I can’t or don’t like it, that’s why I got the lunar rock to fall back on.
Love your channel dude 🔥
Thank you for the support!
Great video! Your 5.7L V8 is bulletproof! 👍
Thanks brother! Amen to that. =]
Absolutely beautiful truck with the perfect mods! After seeing the 2022, I’m still not sold on buy. The TRD Pro didn’t grab me as expected! I’d buy this, if I saw it! Great job on build!
I’m indifferent still… I really like that orange color on it. I appreciate it man, thanks!
I like this better than the new gen pics. Looking forward to seeing the new one revealed tonight but this just looks classic to me. Had a 2017 lariat f150 and had nothing but problems with the eco boost. I’d rather spend a little more at the pump as well and have the peace of mind knowing I won’t have issues. Also, the mpg in the eco boost isn’t what it’s cracked up to be. I had both the f150 and tundra with 3in lifts and 34in tires. Only 1.5 mpg difference so not a big gap IMO. You should also check out the Ajt design interior black door handles. I have them on mine and really like them.
You have been busy, many mods completed. She's a beauty, other mods to consider, Trd CAI, Trd fluid caps, LED interior lighting with bright white, reverse led bulbs and license plate led lighting. KC led cyclone lighting under hood gives excellent lighting for engine bay.
Such a beautiful truck, I picked up a ‘21 Tacoma earlier this year but with having a toddler and possibly another little one in the near future, I’ve realized quickly how small the cabin really is in the Taco. Sometime in the week I’m hoping to rush to my local dealer and try to order one of the last ‘21 Tundras in cavalry blue 💙
I hate to break the news to you my friend but Toyota stop taking orders back in February. I ordered mine in January and I remember them telling me I had just squeaked in by about 30 days. I’m pretty sure they stopped making the 2021 model several months ago.
@@SuperSnakePlissken uh oh, I put an order at the dealer yesterday we’ll see what they can do
@@KillingForFaith Most likely the factory will come back and tell your dealership they can't make the truck. I am really disappointed they took your money and got your hopes up, because I know for a fact when I picked up my truck at the end of June that Toyota had stopped taking orders for the 2021 months prior. When I was signing my papers they told me dozens of people had come in over the last several weeks wanting to build a Tundra and were denied.
I just traded my ‘17 double cab (XSP package) on a ‘21 Lunar Rock TRD Pro and I absolutely love it. The ‘21 was one owner with 11,000 miles. I’m not impressed with the exterior of the ‘22 and only time will tell how the TT V6 fares. I wanted the tried and true 5.7 V8. My TRD Pro rides considerably better than my ‘17 did. I plan on keeping this truck for many years.
Beautiful truck. I am waiting for a 2022/23 in this color. I’m obsessed with it. I love my Platinum but, TRD pro is calling my soul. Lunar rock is best color on the planet. I just need it.
I really need to put those exact nitto ridge liners on my 2020 trd pro army green tundra. It really makes a huge difference to the look of the truck. Looks killer
Appreciate it man!! I love it!!
Got a 2021 Lunar as well. Got it ceramic coated with some PPF on the front bumper and grill surround. I plan to keep it a long time
Do you get a euphoria of owing a new car after owning the same one before? Beautiful truck. Keep up the good videos. Cheers from TX.
Omg that was so solid stunning beast tundra
Saw the 2022 reveal yesterday and noped right out. A Trd Pro that's touted as an off-road truck and doesn't even come equipped with front tow hooks? What a joke.
Your truck is awesome. Why get the 2022? If this truck does everything you asked of it, no point trading it in. I think it looks better than the new truck.
I agree! =]
If only they just up graded the interior like the 2022 this truck would be the best truck on the market
Nice looking truck love the color! You made the right decision. I’ve been trying to track down a lc heritage for a long time now but the search is over I give up. I’ve always wanted a trx but it’s a toss up with reliability. I finally said screw it and ordered a 2022 trx for 5500 under msrp. I will be trading my Gen 2 raptor for it.
The latest generation of tundra are just awesome looking and yours is right there.I don’t think it’s out dated on the outside it’s mainly the dash and that was a very easy update for Toyota. The 5.7 is dependable and that’s what matters. The Ford s have so many problems with turbos acting up(yes I have 19 f250 ).Iam waiting till a few months to see what happens but will probably have a 21 tundra someday .
What a beautiful truck!!! I love it. You should smoke the tail lights slightly. That would look sweet.
Love the upgrades! The Nittos look great I’ve had BFF all terrains but may change since u love the nitros so much. Hey u had me on the fence about white letters out?
Hey Untamed! We too are a Toyota family having traded in the Mercedes for a 2008 Land Cruiser in Immaculate condition, trading my daughter’s Mercedes for a 2007 FJ & my Sierra for a 2019 Tundra Platinum for which I’ve transformed into a “TRD PLATINUM PRO”
I added a 4.5” BDS Suspension Lift & run 35’s & I too LOVE my Diamondback!!! I too have done the mods you’ve done plus a whole lot more!
I’ll wait a couple of Iterations on the new Gen so they can work out the kinks.
Looking forward to seeing your additional mods.
Gimme a holla & I’ll fill you in on the other awesome mods I did.
Keep up the great vids and y’all take care!!!🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Appreciate it brother, thank you!
Man that sounds awesome!! Nice work. Shoot me a note on IG. I’d love to see some photos of it..
Looks great!
Thanks brother! I appreciate it.
It’s beautiful love it
Anyone know how long til they get rid of the '21s officially? Or when they'll stop letting you build one online?😕😞
Nice!! U got it back!! But I wish u still put those goRhino running boards.. the last lunar rock u had still totally rocks!!!
Thanks man. I’ll likely swoop up another set of GoRhinos. They are my favorite! =]
I’m doing the same, getting a 2021 TRD Pro in Magnetic Gray. Don’t do V6’s, and I just can’t do without that TRD Dual Exhaust. Love the Diamondback, awesome Tonneau Cover. Very nice truck overall; love everything you did to it. 😎
Thanks man! And congratulations on your new 21! When does it come in?
@@UntamedMotors I found it slightly used at a dealership about 6 hours away from where I live via Autotrader. 2700 miles on it, mint condition. The dealer is meeting me halfway so I don’t have to drive so far. Pretty nice thing to do now that I think about it. I couldn’t find a new one in this color, so I decided to go this route. I was offered a new one in Lunar Rock for $57,380.00, but it had no bed liner or steps; and it had the Michelin tires. This gray one has the bed liner, the tube steps, and the Nitto Ridge Grapplers. Most likely via the Tundra Value Package. The tires are 275 65 R18. They look nice, not as nice as yours but still nice. The bigger size you have definitely looks better. I’ll upgrade them to that size when these wear out 😎
@@UntamedMotors I meant to ask, did your Tundra come with the LED Bed Lights & a Power Tailgate Lock?
@@Enforcer0623 awesome man! Sounds like a perfect option! Saves you a few bucks and the headache of having to source them and install. Congrats!
Unfortunately no bed lock on this one… nor do I have the LED lights. =\
Guaranteed this guy will have a ‘22 trd pro by June of next year. Its a real problem bro, but fun to watch and listen. It inflates the ego of my on-board will power feature. If you want to play in investments, go with property. If you’re smart about it you can gain a free tundra per year per property. Now’s the time.
2022 interior alone hands down. 21 is a great vehicle. Give it two years most will want the upgrade. The new one is hot.
Get the led interior light kit. It’s freakin awesome as it Also includes the rear bed lights that illuminate from the third brake light on top of the cab and also license plate lights. It’s so much brighter inside. You and the kiddos will love the brighter illumination inside compared to that incandescent look… awesome video as usual untamed 👍👍👍
I agree… I’m about due to look into LED lighting… appreciate it man. Thanks!
MESO Customs makes a good LED interior kit. Some have a red light option too.
Who do you recommend for the led light kit? Thanks.
@@gtray3572 Amazon has them for like 25 bucks
I will pass on the 2022, your truck looks awesome👍🏼. I’m not a turbo fan when it comes to full-size trucks. Excellent video✌🏼😎 Southern Cali.
Truck is beautiful!
You inspired me to get a 21 pro! Now I’m also interested in the diamondback cover. Did you have to remove the bed rail caps to install yours?
That's a nice looking truck. Looks much better than the 22.
Thanks man!!
Great show thank you for taking the time. I believe this truck is beautiful quick question on your hand rail modification on the driver side do you believe that there may be a reason why Toyota decided not to put one there? Perhaps it will interfere with the airbags, hate to see that handle become a projectile when deployed, your thoughts?
Dam dude that’s a beautiful truck 🤙🏼
Thanks man! Appreciate it!
Did you get them TRD Pro/ Tundra emblems in matte or glossy black?
Best look, just stunning
Thanks man!!
This looks so much better than the new one.
100% agree… I sold this and ended up buying a 2023 TRD Pro. I miss this 21 all the time.
@@UntamedMotors the only incentive for me to even consider the new one is fuel economy, and that's it
@@UntamedMotors didn't you make a video just 2 months ago saying this 21 would be your forever truck? lol
@@arisyn yep can’t make the mistake of selling it again…
AWESOME I'm buying the 2022 as well and keeping my 2021 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro lunar rock with only 81 miles on it. Thank you for sharing. ONE SICK TRUCK ON PLANET EARTH.
Heck yeah man! Perfect combo.
Thanks!
Yes sir thank you
Didnt u hav go rhino steps on here at one point? Do u prefer these u have now to those?
Great truck!! How I know? I have one like yours, I'm agree everything you say it's true!! Best truck with simplicity but reliability and long term!!!! Congrats!!
Can you tell me what the MSRP was on that. I’m shopping a 21 TRD Pro and think they are asking more for it used than when it was new.
The 21 looks like a minivan, the refresh was much needed
Are the 295 Nitto Ridge grapplers on this truck with the stock suspension? No level ect just slapped them on?
Awesome truck. Built to last
Wish they made the interior of 22 tundras for the 2021 trd pro body’s. Love them they look so boss
2007 TRD Crewmax here with 389K on the odometer. Still blows cold air (In the South that's a mandatory) This truck has been amazing... I'll drive this until the AC goes out or it is just too expensive to fix... I could not tell you how perfect this truck has been and you believe me... The reliability has totally ruined me on any other truck..
Wow that’s incredible man! 389K! Thanks for sharing and congrats on making such a great milestone on your Tundra. =]
Good looking truck brother with all the mods added , now finish off the start button,4wd ,hvac with Ajt chrome delete rings to match the rest imo… 22 model just isn’t for me !!
I'd take this Lunar over the new one anyday! Nice build 👌
Appreciate it man! Thank you!
Just buy it man! Life is too short if you have money buy it ASAP
Any issues with tire rub on upper control arms or skid plate?
I know the TRD Pro is lifted a little higher than the regular 4x4 but is your leveled or anything? That’s perfect stance 👌🏽
Still #2 on the list for this truck at a somewhat local dealership. Starting to doubt it will happen.
Curious if you’re still gonna be able to open the diamondback cover with your bed system on the rack
Unfortunately not with the iKamper on. Buuuut, this system allows for a relatively simply install and removal process for the camper.
Very nice looking truck. How's the tire noise on roads especially on highways? Thanks
what size 285s did you have on previous tundra?
Can you please provide links for the retailers of the aftermarket components highlighted in this video? Especially the interior modifications. If a person did not know they were aftermarket, they could easily be mistaken for OEM. I appreciate when aftermarket components integrate seamlessly.
Man, Such a beast-looking truck, I think this and the GMC AT4 just look so deadly. Can you buy the Toyota tundra TRD without the sunroof to get more head room?
Great looking Tundra and good work on the mods!! I am a proud owner of a 2011 Tacoma and enjoy driving her every day like it was my first day.. As a DIYer, I was Wondering how easy it is to remove or fold the bed cover to maximize the bed space in case you have to pick up furniture, appliances etc?
Believe it or not, it’s super simple and not as heavy as it looks. I installed it by myself. It’s held down with 4 C clamps in the middle. Should take less than 45 mins to get completely off.
I steal all of your your rationale for purchasing and owning the 21 to justify my own 21 with my better half, who is not much of a truck fan 😄👊
I’d go with a 4Runner unless you need to tow anything over 5,000. These trucks are huge witch will limit you going off road but definitely the best truck out there.
When you redid the 4Runner tint, did you end up going with 70% on the windshield as well?
I did, yep! It was a great decision =]
Ahh I love this tundra my uncle has 2021 pro just like yours minus the diamond back and tires. I been bugging him to buy it off of him and convince him to get the 2022 but he's not having it 🤣.
Thanks man. Haha it’s always a tough sell getting folks to part with their current gen tundra.
Do you have a link for the wireless phone charger on your arm rest?
11:26.
I see you did the same thing I did an over drilled those plastic welts LOL. My drillbit went all the way through as well. Luckily much like yours it’s not noticeable to anyone but us.
Great points concerning the twin turbo motor at the end of your video. I do around 35,000 miles a year as a regional vice president of my company that requires a truck because I deliver product, pick up product, and just prefer to own a truck. My last truck was a 2017 F150 eco-boost and I can tell you right now that motor is not what for claims it to be. In town are usually got around 16 mpg and on the highway I would you should get around 21 or 22 mpg. I can tell you right now it can definitely tell if the mpg is terrible. Once you get around 8000 pounds I never got better than 7.5 miles to the gallon. It’s horrendous.
At around 90,000 miles the bearings went out on the TwinTurbo which cost me just over $500 to replace. It also had an oil leak at around 105,000 miles and that cost me around $200 to fix. What got me to sell the truck was the twin turbos died this last January was only 156,000 miles. I thought maybe it was a fluke but the mechanic I was working with told me this is typically when they start replacing them. He said the range is around 150,000 to 200,000 miles is when you typically replace the TwinTurbo. The problem is it was $4150.
So when you factor in the cost to get that motor in the first place which I believe was $1750 overgrown coyote engine, the fact I spent around $1000 to maintain in replacement parts for TwinTurbo, and every 30,000 miles I had to do the TDI service which is mandatory in turbo motors to take care of the carbon buildup that you get because there’s so much pressure in the motors that all the fuel is not burnt so you get carbon. That was $350 every time. So the total cost there was almost $2000. Having a twin turbo motor made me lose money on the truck.
So in January I sold it and bought a 2021 TRD pro double cab and I wish to God this was the truck I bought back in 2017 instead. It may not have all the bells and whistle‘s but it is better in every way.
I won’t bore you with all the details but I’ll tell you one of the biggest things is when I’m towing 8000 pounds which I’ve done twice since I’ve purchased it, I usually average around 10.5 miles to the gallon. That’s incredible. When you tow that much weight and you’re driving six hours straight one way they can become very expensive. Also, I typically get around 15 mpg in town and around 18 mpg on the highway.
Bottom line there’s 2021 truck I hope to have for a very long time. Oh, one last thing. I got the same exact tires that you have but they’re in at 285/74/18 and I Do you not think I lose any mpg with the bigger tires.
Where can I find the black TRD Pro letters?
did you get a transmission cooler?
I prefer the look/utility of a camper shell...but your bed with the racks looks sick.
I hear yah… Appreciate it man! =]
Just put the iKamper on today… I love it!
I just bought a new 21 Tundra TRD Pro for Msrp. I was waiting on a 22 when the 21 showed up. I pounced on it.
Nice! Congrats!
Nice looking Tundra
Thank you!
I really wish they would offer the v8 as an option for the next generation! Even ford doesn't offer the 5.0 for every trim level
The 2022 sure looks good. I'm debating on whether to sell my Sequoia Pro and get the new Tundra. The downside is I love the room in the Sequoia, but the MPG sucks.
That’d be a tough jump but I wouldn’t blame you for considering it. I’d want them to work out the bugs after the first model year though… so maybe a 23?
As If the Tundra MPG is much of a difference?
@@ybdizz I think the new one gets about 8mpg better. Old tundra mpg sucks.
You should do LED amber blinkers. Significantly brighter when the headlights are on
That’s a great idea. Thanks
Have you tried using the 2021 TRD Pro factory included Jack? Apparently many reviewers have said it doesn’t work well.
I have not unfortunately… =\
Hey man nice truck What size of rims and tires do u have
Nice! I just need to find a dealership to get a 4runner pro at Msrp!! Oc, California is terrible. Charging 10 to 15k over! I’m on one waiting list that I’ve been on for 5 months and still number 30
Im selling mine, its a 2022 TRD PRO in Magnetic Gray for 58000
Where did you get your windows tinted? I’m also in Maryland not too far from you. I need to get my ‘21 redone. Had some issues with where I got it done. They got water down the dash by the A-pillar which got wiring harnesses wet. Caused my battery light to start flickering. Was not a happy camper!
I got mine done at MD Tint in Annapolis. They did a great job.
Could you add links to all the things you did to the truck? That way you should get commission and it makes it easier for us to make our trucks as sweet as yours lol
I love this truck
Thanks a ton brother! Super happy with it. I’ve since bought another one recently (after having sold this one and regretting it).
