It's amazing to hear all of your comments with your memories of this event! I didn't expect that. I'm very glad to be able to share this footage that I found with you all!
My grandfather died in this storm saving people from his hotel. His name was Kenneth Petrosky. He owned the Petrosky hotel. The hotel collapsed on him
😔💔
i lived in glassport at this time i was 7 when the tornado came thru,, destroyed my dad's work, the glasshouse
I was 10 yrs old and lived near St. Cecilia's, it was terrifying. I remember all of us walking around in shock, many in our PJs. Thanks for posting!
I lived in Glassport that day. I was 11 years old. I will never forget the water being lifted out of the river and the wind.
I was also 11 years old and lived in Liberty Boro. We were warned by the volunteer fire department not to sleep that night due to the leak from Clairton mill. We spent the night at my grandparents' home on Riverview Ave in McKeesport then toured Glassport the next morning. We'd had several school field trips to the Broadway skating rink which was leveled. The devastation was breathtaking.
i lived in LIncoln Boro when this happened. i was turning 13 in a few days and my parents and i were in pittsburgh, Civic arena, watching a civic lights opera. when we came out and were going home we heard this had happened. i remember my parents feeling so bad that so much was ruined, especially for them was Glassport skating rink, where they spent their teens before the war and during when my dad was in the service, my mother spent her weekends there. we were told it was a tornado. sad sad thing to have happened. i am old now but still remember.
I was 6 when this occurred and my parents talking about how bad it was. We lived in Whitehall and recall the sky being green when the storm was passing through the McKeesport area. I kind of remember driving through the area several days later.
My father took me thru Glassport the night after this happened. I was 10. I've never forgotten it.
looks like glassport today
Before the economic devastation of the 1980s Glassport and McKeesport actually were important.
Today you can still see remaining remnants, as I have still been devastated by this horrible disaster.
I was 8 and lived in West Mifflin when this happened. People refused to believe that it was a tornado because "tornadoes don't hit Pittsburgh".
I believe this was rated an f3 tornado at the time. i was reading an article that despite the tornado track only being 0.1 miles that it was likely that it was much longer than that. during the 60s though they weren't as advanced when it came to tornadoes. Similar to the 1944 tornado that went through the south hills
I was just a young boy when this came through the area. It took out our church on the way through.
My mom was 15 when this happend. You can catch a glimpse of our house
they might say it wasn't a tornando but sure looks like one to me ... i never knew of this ... wow...
it was confirmed to be a tornado
My parents met at the Glassport roller skating rink, that was completely leveled... my dad always joked that that was an omen.
I lived in Lincoln Boro at the time we went into the basement of our house. One of the Gas tanks at Clairton steel mill sprung a Leak and we had to evacuate. Also St Peter's Church Lost Its Steeple. The church was closed for repair but it eventually reopened. While it was closed they had Church at Holy Trinity. We also had a sheet of corrugated metal that Flew into our back yard.
cleaner then mckeesport today
Judging by the defined swath it made through the woods, I'd say it was a tornado.
off topic, i saw a ghost walking down monongehela ave in glassport in April 2012, i was waiting to meet a real estate agent and i was early so i was driving around, i saw an african american man who had a green face, like decomposition or severe jaundice ???? , wearing an older style 1940's brown suit, he was on the sidewalk, walking west, leaning to the side with a pronounced limp, like someone with an injury or stroke, he was walking fairly fast with his limp. It was the weirdest thing, and got me interested in ghosthunting.
That was no ghost that was either Joe Biden or Barack Hussein Obama
probably not a ghost...there was green man who really turned green after being hit by lightning many many years ago when i was a kid. or maybe it was lol. that was long time ago.
Wow that’s crazy I’m from Glassport and this is insane if this happened now a days they’d just condemn the town
Sad seeing that fate of such a large building in downtown mckeesport
I remember that night
You can take the music and stick it up where the sun don't shine
I was at my Grandma’s house on Iowa Ave. with my extended family and could see it.
Never forget that night and the next four days!
I saw the aftermath firsthand. Our family only lost a tree.
