  • Grounded theory strategies have spawned numerous studies in medical sociology since Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss made their original statement of the method. Yet the grounded theory method is contested from within and without. This talk aims to clarify what grounded theory is, to correct misunderstandings about it, to explain points of convergence and divergence among the three major versions of grounded theory, and to describe how recent revisions of the method answer earlier criticisms. To date, researchers have not fully realized the power and potential of grounded theory. With their sensitivity to both individual situations and structural contexts, medical sociologists are well-poised to use this method to construct sophisticated theoretical analyses while simultaneously advancing the development of grounded theory. To encourage medical sociologists to move in these directions, Professor Charmaz illustrates how adopting grounded theory guidelines can expedite inquiry and offer tips and tricks that advance the analytic process.
Kathy Charmaz is Professor of Sociology and Director of the Faculty Writing Program at Sonoma State University in which she helps faculty with their research and scholarly writing. She has written, co-authored, or co-edited nine books.

Kathy Charmaz was the foundation for my doctorate - love her narrative, thinking and perspective x Abductive reasoning is a genius conception. I had brief email exchange with Prof Charmaz - I loaded both barrels and defended my thesis with her wisdom. I understand she came under fire for writing style during her Masters degree - well, her writing is the most intelligent, accessible and coherent text I have ever read. 19:40 - I was dazzled by your work x a reformer of Grounded Theory.

Amazingly clear and helpful explanation of GT. Surely helped me overcome this learning curve into this analysis approach.

It would have been so much more helpful if the videographer would bring the slides into view when Kathy was talking about the content on them.

Great session, but the slides are too fast! Can we have a link to ppt slides too?

I respect Kathy Charmaz's approach to GT and would love to share this video with students. However, as in the previous comment, this video would require so much explanation because of the poor capture and editing, it would not be worth it! A pity.

This is an incredibly useful lecture and how wonder to hear from Kathy Charmaz. But the editing on this video is infuriating. When the professor is discussing a topic or explaining her presentation, why are we getting shots of the audience? Why only glances of the presentation?

Watching this video is very frustrating. I would like to provide the link to it to the students in a seminar I teach, but as it is, I don't feel comfortable doing so.
To whoever edited this video: Could you please redo it and include all the ppt slides Dr Charmaz showed and referred to, or as Mark Carver wrote, could you please provide a link to the ppts? Thank you.
