Shotgun 650 ‖ It's Royal Enfield Jim, but not as we know it...

- So I was finally able to get back up to Midwest Moto and understand what the Shotgun 650 is all about. It's not like any other Royal Enfield and to me that's a good thing they are doing something different.

I have owned one for a month and have put 4,000 Mi on that exact bike. Modifications are aew peashooter mufflers, bar ends mirrors, sump guard, DNA air filter. The suspension softens up. I've traveled up to 250 a day on it in Colorado. I've had 2 interceptors and 1 Classic 350. This is by far the best 650 to date. It's a do all.
Nice to hear Mark, I was very impressed with it and it is the highest quality RE so far...
I really want this one as my first bike. I really love the style
Why am I still watching bike reviews 😂 It does appear to me to be a bit of a "bruiser" this bike 😎 Not in a threatening way, just "I can hold my own" . The REs have character and I'd agree, the power is plenty enough for our roads. I actually like the blue version, but will be a while before I cross paths with this machine 😅 Great review and presentation, I can imagine it's hard to film on your own at the best of times and funny ending. Everything doesn't have to be edited to be perfect anyway 😎
Well Lee, thank you very much for watching to the end! It's a challenge to film as an example Suzie came up there yesterday with me to do the SuperMeteor and the second half of the video is very out of focus 😂😂. We can't reshoot our joint presentation so it will have to go up as it is... 😬.
I was a bit star-struck at meeting a proper CZcams celebrity and forgot to ask Suz for her autograph.
On the contrary Andy, was great to meet you and Suzie said afterwards it was nice to chat with you. I think you and that bike of yours have the star power! Thank you again for our drinks, that was very kind.
Awww that's a nice thing to say! I have always been a celebrity on the inside since I was a kid, ask my family 😂 It was so nice to see you and to have a proper chat. Looovvveeeedddd the sound of your exhaust and I whopped as you growled off out of the dealership and we were in the back filming 😅 Hope to see you again soon. Thanks for the kind comments about me supporting Sean too, it's lovely that it's noted, and that I'm clearly doing something right in the way that I love Sean ❤
Nice video mate.👍
I’ve tested this and the super meteor the shotgun wins for me as I can’t stand forward controls.
To me I never feel fully in control with forwards.
Both really nice bikes though.
Thank you for the comment, I also rode the SM650 and it's a close one. For 2 up its SM and for touring its SM. Everything else it would probably be Shotgun...
Excellent review bud, l didn't like the look of the Shotgun when it first came out but it's grown on me 👍
Hi Mark, thank you very much. It has grown on me as well. Sean
Good work Sean… gave us a real perspective on this machine, thanks. 👍❤️😎✅
Hi Nigel, well thanks. I just waffle on to be honest, I'm glad there was some semblance of logic in it all 😂😂👍. Thank you!
No one needs more power more hp, but clearly the masses want more hp. I’d say the biggest problem is your countrymen are allowing politicians to place absurd speed limits throughout your country. It has nothing to do with safety and everything to do with compliance and additional revenue to waste. Wake up and take your country back people.
How did you know I'm welsh!? I didn't think I had the accent Ha! The less said about the Welsh Assembly the better 😊😂
Based on the economy, RE are the bike of the future. Great review
I think many a CZcamsr will be eyeing the Classic650 as a channel bike, that one I think a lot of people are hanging on for... Thanks Richard
I've seen a couple of reviews that compare the Shotgun to the HD883, generally very favourably, so sportster seems right.
I guess they are not in the same price point. Perhaps a secondhand 883 could be around 6-7k... You've also got lumpy V twin vs refined P twin. Quite different experience IMO.
I agree. Not engine wise. But the ride, yes.
Oh the trials and tribulations of a CZcamsr trying to put together a video with those pesky punters getting in the way. Still you managed to pull off a fantastic review here Sean. Everything you would want to know about the Shotgun when making a decision to buy or not to buy. Keep ‘em coming 👍😊
That's very kind Nigel thank you for this comment. Yes imagine that, customers with money to spend in the dealer. Really I should get out to their way 😂😂. Thanks again for your kind words, Suzie and I are grateful!
Royal Enfield is making quite a name for itself in making affordable dependable quality motorcycles. It's nice to know there is a company that is built on these aspects, and they're building a brand loyalty. This means a lot to a potential buyer. I would like to have one of these Shotgun 650 motorcycles. 6/23/24.
Brand loyalty is an interesting point that many overlook, supporters of RE are very very loyal. That is worth a lot. Thanks! Sean
I agree
A wonderful review and assessment of a fantastic real world motorbike. Well done, indeed.
Thank you, sir!
SS
Thank you very much, great comment to get as a casual 'CZcamsr'. You've brightened up my day so thanks! Regards, Sean
Nice review! It's not a plastic nacelle as you mention at 4:15. It's metal. All parts are metal. It matters because the shotgun is something of an evolution of the original Bullet when you look closely.
Good point, thanks for the correction there. It should be celebrated when companies put bikes together with metal parts!
@@MindfulMotorcyclist love the content! Please keep on doing what you’re doing
@@bensal07 That's very kind and very encouraging to say to a smaller channel. Thanks a lot for that.
Great review 👍
I only just found this engine has the °270 crank, which gives the "sound" you're talking about.
I'm surprised not many reviewers mention this, as it's this attribute folks seem to want. Take the CF Moto MT for example. 🤔
This is nice offering from Royal Enfield Sean and presented very well by your good self , this one is growing on me looks wise it will be very interesting to see how good the classic 650 turns out but as it stands the Inter is still my favorite nice job well done.👌👍
Thank you Crumbly, very much appreciated. I am also hoping for the Classic 650. As I mentioned in the comment above I'm guessing that it will be Aug/Sept for Classic650 release. I hope to ride one as I suspect it will be quite a popular choice...
This motorcycle has soul
Thanks for this review Sean. Very detailed and packed with all the info a potential buyer needs. Shotgun is a nice looking bike and I agree that it seems to be aimed at a different segment of the market, rather than just retro classic fans. Can’t beat the price and RE build quality improves with every model. Cheers and ride safe, Dan. 🏍✌️🇨🇦
Thank you Dan, appreciate the comment here. I agree with the above, RE quality gets better and better as time goes on. If I do leave BSA ownership it will likely only be for a RE... look after yourself and enjoy the summer rides Dan! Regards, Sean
Riding weather has truly arrived and I’ve had some good ones, but Eastern Canada is currently under a heat advisory with temps feeling like 35 - 40C , so it’s a bit uncomfortable if you ride with full gear, which I do. Now looking for a good, light weight mesh jacket, for much needed ventilation. D.
I’m a new subscriber and looking forward to more videos , great review
Thank you very much Gary, really appreciate the comment and the sub of course. Sean
Evening Sean, ok you sold it to me, everything your describing the vibes the motor telling you what’s it doing, firm springs, over here would be a boom, the power delivery looks a blast, great tyre choice as well, due to tubeless, I love the look edgy they call it these days 🥴. To me the Ducati monster of the RE range and I loved my monster, good review mate enjoyed that, ….. Pete 🇫🇷
It's really funny, the more 'honest' I am the more people gel with and are 'sold' on a particular motorcycle. If I'd done a typical spec sheet overview and hidden the (in my opinion) overly firm ride people wouldn't have been so positive. Weird how the world works sometimes 🙂. Anyway, yes I think on smooth roads, this bike would be an absolute blast and nice customisable start for RE ownership. Cheers, Sean
@@MindfulMotorcyclist Hi Sean I’m afraid spec sheets and connectivity, flat screen speedos, and OE twatnaves, just make me stare into space until something interesting is said, keep it simple me 🙄 how the motor feels what the chassis does how it corners, and a good look around it so I can see what I can do to make it my own, I like to see how it tracks round bends (and you chose a great road to test) things like a good back brake ( which to me means good to trail brake help turn in) acceleration out of turns how smooth (or not) the box is, all of this is what I want to hear and you did all of that and demonstrated it on your ride, for me a good review, well done mate …. Pete 🇫🇷
I'm still waiting for the promised scrambler.
Official announcement in july at Barcelona.
It's coming 17th of July. It's going to be 450 & a 650 one will also come with more of a traditional scrambler design but that will be later, meaning next year.
Great video nice well balanced review. Like the detail look at the start. Could make a nice bobber. Loose rear seat and drop the handle bars 👍🏻. What makes is your jacket?
Thanks Andy, appreciate this kind comment. It's designed in a unique way to be fair the seat can be removed to give a new 'look'. My jacket is Spada and I've been very impressed with it so far. I've switched back to my lighter Oxford jacket just as the days are now quite warm and the parka is well insulated... cheers.
Nice, detailed review. I do like that black engine finish with the contrasting lettering; I wonder if it will be more durable than the polished cases? I think polished cooling fin edges would finish it off a treat.
Hi Luddite, thank you for the comment. My gut feeling would be yes it will be, finished surfaces seem to last better than polished alloy. I've seen RE owners complain about tarnishing on the alloy cases, that said Willie had some blistering on his Triumph t120 black. Whatever that gel-looking surface coat is, it seems tough to me and have you ever heard anyone complain about RE paint being thin and flaky? I havent to be honest.
Woah this is AMAZING Babe!! First off, I like the sound of that powder blue M3 coloured Shotgun- right up my street 😉😅🔥 Secondly and more importantly, this review is so thorough and GREAT! You're a natural star and its so good to see you in your flow 🌟 Let's see what you think of the RE Super Meteor. I'm not sure it's going to be as comfortable as you think with it's front positioned foot pegs but let's see 🤔 Keep on shining handsome ❤😍
Very kind thank you! What do you prefer? SM650, Shotgun or... BSA Goldstar 😂😂😄
It was reported that the average RE owner in India is 27. That’s some difference to the UK 😄.
That is an interesting statistic! Cheers...
Enjoyed that review, Sean. Thanks.
Thank you Jez, really appreciate that. Hope you and the family are well and work is treating you good. Regards, Sean
Great review, I bought a Benda/keeway 302 after asking your couple reviews ❤
Thanks LF, really appreciate that. How are you getting on with the 302? All good I hope.
@@MindfulMotorcyclist it's a nice little bike. I have done about 100kms so I'm still getting a hang of it. Won't be my last bike :)
At last AT LAST,someone who acknowledges you don't need ridiculous amounts of bhp to have a fun bike to ride. Enjoyment is what it's about. Italian firm mistral do a nice aftermarket exhaust and bar end mirrors are available. A good review.
Thanks Phil. I'm a plodder on a bike not a racer well, 90% of the time anyway. Also, with the roads the way they are today, if you pushing on as people online and in the magazines seem to espouse, you're really putting yourself in danger. 10am on Christmas day is now a busy road driving time in the UK, never used to be like that.
Well done Sean, another great review video thanks. Keep up the good work. The RE Shotgun is not for me, I would rather have the RE Super Meteor.
Thank you Will. Really appreciate this comment. Means a lot to have your support. We did ride the SM but I messed up the filming, I might need to re-do it! Sean
@@MindfulMotorcyclist Please do Sean, I would love to see you do a RE Super Meteor review. Best wishes Will
Ive had my stencil white Shotgun for a few months now and ive loved every single minute. It is such an honest, back to raw basics bike. Unless uou are a die hard plastic rocket biker, tou really dont need any more power.
I agree, you don't need more power. I have a Sport bike when I want a blurred landscape 😂, which these days isnt very often...
I love the shotgun
Great review. Well done. Kind of you to mention the Colonel 👍
Thank you Paul, is that your bike then? and we chatted outside Midwest? Just putting two and two together.
Yes. That was me. ✌️@@MindfulMotorcyclist
This bike is awesome, l love it , when I pass my test,it will be mine in gray👏👏👏😎
Metal grey, the cheapest at £6700 and the best in my opinion. It's nice when the colour you want is also the lowest price. Good luck with your test, another viewer, Lee on here recently passed and he's having a great riding summer! Cheers, Sean
Be a great bike for that, and it'll bring on your riding skills quickly because she requires more skill to ride her. I have to switch on a bit when I change from my Honda cb500f straight on to the Shotgun!.... and the colour of mine? Sheet metal grey👍
Great video mate 👍 weird though, feel like I've seen it before!!😂
Shhhhh you shouldnt tell anyone you had a behind the scenes pass. 😂. We need to start a CZcamsr cabal!
Tires have to be changed out every so many thousand miles, no exception and you can put anything that fits. Moot point.
Cheers, Lee.
Such a nice ride!❤
Really nice bike to be fair!
Hi Sean, great reveiw as always. Im a SM650 owner, I would have prefaired a blacked out version like the Shotgun but it never came. I owned a fireball 350 before. Seeing as you have a bit of a relationship going with the RE dealers, can you get any info on when we will be getting (in the UK) the genuine SM650 panniers that we are now seeing on bikes in India? They were on all the press shots when the bike was released. I heard they were held up as they had to redesign them. Keep up the good work mate!
Hi Peter, thank you for the kind comments. Ah so you are someone who upgraded from the 350 Meteor to the 650 version, I did wonder if the extra power would tempt 350 owners! As far as the panniers, I haven't spoken to anyone about it. My dealer has just onboarded Royal Enfield a few months ago so I would doubt he has the background for the accessories. I will ask however next time I am up there, I plan to film a SM650 ride so that might be an opportune time to discuss the panniers... thanks! Sean
@@MindfulMotorcyclist Ok cheers Sean. Yes, Himalayan to 350 Meteor to SM650. Really really miss the Himalayan. Used to be into sports bikes. Ive got an 05 ZX636 that I bought new. Only got 6000 (mainly trackdays) miles on. Became really horrible and painfull to ride on the road. Bought the Himalayan to get back to road riding without much knowledge of RE. I've been blow away with how good they are. Think the 650 will be a forever bike.
Great film , nice looking bike 😊
Not bad is it... would you ever be tempted by RE by the way?
@@MindfulMotorcyclist absolutely yes , it’s probably the bike I was looking for in the BSA
There’s room for one next to the Scout bobber
Hi great vid just a small point i think you will find that the headlight nacelle is cast aluminium another quality item not plastic
Good point bobster, thanks 😊
Steve McQueen would be happy to ride in the Great Escape. As you know I love the look of this bike but compared to the bike I'm touring on it just wouldn't do it. Super Meteor is maybe a consideration for the future, looking forward to you riding the Super Meteor.
Hi Bob, I have a CFmoto 650MT vid filmed and ready to edit. That should also be of interest to you. I should say thanks for telling me in advance your experience, that helped me know what to look for in the test ride! Kind regards, Sean
Now that’s interesting (and disappointing) about the suspension. It was a weak spot on the Interceptor, but going too firm on a bike like this doesn’t make much sense, either. While I did like the Shotgun more when I saw it in person, I still think RE puts out too many models on the same platform. When they get around to a liquid cooled twin is when I’ll probably come back to them. For now there’s too many other bikes I’d like to try out, even if I’ll always have a soft spot for RE. Enjoyed the review, Sean. Good information here.
Our views are quite aligned Mark. I think RE are beginning to stretch the economy of multiple bikes sharing the same engine platform a little too far. I mean yes everyone does it look at Hondas 500cc twin range, yamahas CP2 but the difference is those bikes are completely different. R7 vs Tracer 700 vs XSR 700. How different is the Bullet 350 from the Classic 350? That said RE will always tug on my heart strings, they are a special brand and I would probably buy into a big single from them or a 800cc twin, something like that, a bit different. Until then we can expect to see more 650 bikes (bear, classic 650) and now propagation of the 450 sherpa engine into multiple bikes... thanks 😊
that is a well presented bike ;;;
I agree, very very quality fit and finish.
Hi, enjoyed the video and it’s a bike I’m interested in . I’m 6’4” and about 16 stone.. before lunch 😊, would I fit it ?
Well you really need to go and watch Two Wheeled Willie, he's 6'4'' and considering the shotgun himself. He said that SuperMeteor was great for him and it fit his legs because of the forward controls! Thanks, Sean
Don't like blacked out bikes whether they are BSAs, Moto Guzzi's, Royal Enfield or any other manufacturer so not sold on its looks. Comparing twins with singles is a mugs game but at £800 more than the GoldStar Shadow do you think its worth that premium.
Hi Ian, you might be more of a Classic 650 man then... as might I! The switchgear, headlight, general finish etc are ahead of the BSA. BSA is much more classic feeling, I don't know they trade blows for sure. Secondhand is where the real deals are in my book.
Hi
Any news on on the classic 650 release date
Thanks
Hello, if I had to guess I would say this year, probably in August/September. I mean that's a total guess but we've seen spyshots and they are usually 'released' a couple of months prior to a launch. The bike is complete by the looks of it...
Subscribed... so I can watch more Royal Enfield videos
Thanks, I do have one of the SuperMeteor coming. Perhaps Himmy 450 although I'm not as keen on that bike...
Muito bom !!!
Very good?
Pity it's gained so much weight over the interceptor. The stiff front suspension could probably be fixed with a lighter oil grade and your impression might be partly due to the bike not being run-in yet.
Thats true Andrew, it could be a lot to do with not being run in!
The front fork is brilliant and the rear shocks are shite. Plan on getting aftermarket rear shocks.
Thanks for the comment, good to know. Are you going Hagons?
@MindfulMotorcyclist Yes, I went with Hagons, pretty happy with them.
Like I have said previously , the shotgun wasn't a bike for me. Maybe it was the weight 240 kg that put me off pushing it around. A lot of A2 bikes sub 200kg will leave this thing for dust. This is from a RE Fan boy.
Well I am also a RE fanboy, I do like the quality bump theyve given the Shotgun but agree the 240 with 90% fuel and oil is quite a hefty number...
I like the bike, but none of the colours float my boat.
Or just buy a different bike 😂
Is it in the same space as the Kawasaki Eliminator?
Eliminator would be half the weight, more costly, but the Eliminator has modern design............
Eliminator costs less@@mannyechaluce3814
@lumpycarbs It would be in the same space BUT the Eliminator is a 500 P twin and lower torque... also the dash on the Kawa really needs updating. I would like to ride the Elim but the local Kawasaki dealer arent that encouraging of 'review' type rides. Perhaps at ABR... Thanks!
@@MindfulMotorcyclist similar to comparing the T400 to the Gold Star?
Fuel filter?
Perhaps Evap canistor some have said? I though Fuel on first glance.
Thats not a fuel filter its the evap canister
Cheers buddy for the headsup!
the wind noise does not show , or sound ,, carry on filming ;;;; if a screen was fitted - that would disturb the air more and create more noise ;;;
Quite right Simon, I've discovered that screens really do not suit me at 5'11''. Always get buffeting...
weights 529 lbs ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, hefty
Not too heavy for me, plus the motor has been revised since the early days and is certainly not muted by the mass...
Bloke......nice review, thank you for sharing, friend. It stri,es me this is not far from a 650 version of the Hntr350. I've always liked the Hntr for its presence and ethos but it just isnt enough power for me. Hence, I think why the Speed400 and those new creed coming through are being received so well with their extra oomph. But this seems to offer the soul and spirit of a Hntr with the power it needs to fully excite. Whaddya reckon, handsome chops?! I read, disappointingly, Suze mentioning to folk how much she luuurves you......Yeah, well, she's eventually going to get bored of your tall, dark handsome looks......and your fun personality.......and your skillful media presence.......and your global appeal with floozies the world over, swooning. Yep, she'll eventually realise how she really needs a short-@rse, chubster Brummy with a bald patch and no money. My dad jokes will prevail, my unbridled capacity to drink tea and procrastinate over every household job will grip her passion........and we will head off into the sunset on my Suzy VanVan(albeit it very slowly!).
Meanwhile, whilst I patiently wait for sense to overpower Suzy, great to see you both in blighty and hope you are both having a ball here in the Midlands, friend. Keep smilin', chap and take care, both...
I would agree with that, mine definitely feels like it could be a Hunter 650👍
Great comment George! Your comments are some of the best on here and I love reading them! On the motorcycling topic Hunter 450 will be coming at some point, you'll have almost T400 power with a RE badge on the tank. Could be good. As for the second part hahahaha! Let it be known that Suze actually loves a Dad joke (her Dad is a bit of an expert at them) and has a cupboard full of tea that would put a cafe to shame! Thanks for the really nice message and lovely to hear from you George!! Kind regards, Sean
