  • I've failed every IQ test I've ever taken.
That's because to increase my intelligence, I've taken a different path.
One that any brain can handle. 🧠
Will it be the right path for you?
I don't know, but I thought you might like to learn my conclusions about how to increase IQ.
I've thought about the problem for years.
And now I'm happy to share with you what I think is the better, or at least more likely path to becoming smarter.
Keep in mind that SMARTER in the MMM world also means:
    Serious
    Mature
    And
    Ready
    To
    Embrace
    Reality
What this effectively means is doing what it takes to make improvements to your intelligence.
And if you've ever asked, is intelligence fixed? The answer is no.

IQ isnt what many people think. A dummy can be smarter than a genius. It isnt what you think, it is how you think. Having the ability to reason, assess reasoning, and the ability to think things through, are more important than an IQ score.

A shrink pegged my IQ at 137 when I was 8 years old. Technically, that puts me at the lower end of genius. Or it used to anyways, I think the classification has changed since then.
But you could have fooled me! I failed grade 12 math twice, and just squeaked by the 2nd time around. I’ve always had a bugger of a time learning pretty much anything, and even more trouble retaining what I have learned. Books and I have never gotten along. Reading, for whatever reason, just doesn’t sink in. I’ve just gone through life searing info into my brain through brute force of will lol.

One way to look at the issue is to take reading out of the equation.
There are many ways to learn.
      Is reading strictly necessary?
Don't get me wrong: I'm a reader and it strikes me as essential to the things I do and the kind of person I want to be and become.
But it's clear and logical that many people don't read much, if at all, and still do very well.

The issue is that we don't actually know for sure that we're only one unwelt. "One" is a human concept that is tremendously nuanced the more one looks into it.
This suggests that the inquiry process is the key, the problem reverting back to why do some inquire and others do not?

@@AnthonyMetivierMMM Curious notion. I guess the 'conscious agents' from Don Hoffmans Interface Theory is the only way I can grasp an umwelt being divided? But then I'd say an umwelt is the sum of all those conscious agents. Although to be honest my interpretation of the word is more the 'unique way each species relates and interpretes reality' meaning the sum of every member of that species rather than on an individual level.
As for why some people do and some dont.. I think maybe all do.. But its to what they reach that differs. To some reaching for a beer from the fridge all night long will suffice.. Where as with others thats not enough. It has long frustrated me though how many people seem to not care at all about deeper understandings of things. And find it all a bore. Although it may just be that they are contented with what they have.. And more is just not necessary, where as for people like myself who are perhaps discontented and so find deeper levels as a side effect of their persuit for contentment?anyway, I digress.

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  Před 2 lety

The problem with umweltian conceptions and the conception of consciousness itself boils down soft vs hard solipsism relative to individual commitments to self inquiry. At the “highest” possible level all these distinctions disappear. I talked about how this can work in my TEDx talk if you haven’t seen it.
It’s possible that all do, as you say, but I’m not sure “passion” encompasses “reach” quite so robustly. Passion to reach for beer in this example most likely comes from the wish to nullify suffering more than enjoyment of the ding-an-sich. Are acts of desperation passion? Perhaps on an earlier definition of that word, but I’m not sure now.

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  Před 2 lety +2

      Thanks, Rich.
I have done both and again, he has a few interesting points. However, a lot of it what he's saying is premised upon historical books. He doesn't do enough to track the evolution of modern education and falls into a number of fallacies as a result. You can also certainly see that a lot of time has passed since he died, and surely you can recognize that time creates many redundancies.
We also have much more recent critiques and serious analyses to consider. Although I would also not give Pinker full reign to be correct either (to take just one such thinker who has addressed education issues in depth), Pinker's analysis is much more well-evidenced and includes a broad range of historical and contemporary resources.
Take it or leave it, but even though I can appreciate Gatto, I do not enjoy his work or find his conclusions fair or compelling (not that enjoyment is required). I do appreciate you mentioning him very much and for being candid. I'll be candid in return: I neither find it difficult or easy to believe you would give me such little credit when it comes to the conclusions I've reached.
But that's largely because belief is fickle and mostly irrelevant. We must work based on evidence, and that returns me to my original response to your suggestion that I would "enjoy" Gatto's work. Enjoyment just isn't at issue in scholarly matters and you haven't really said anything in your original post or your response that provides any reason for the suggestion or evidence that my response is lacking in validity.
So I'll leave you with Nietzsche's suggestion at the end of Beyond Good and Evil to seek that coldest of cold places. I have yet to see any signs in Gatto's work that he was going there, nor in your responses. But I'll give Gatto this: He certainly is good at giving critics of education "comfort food" for further criticism of the educational systems of the world. But where does criticism get anyone?
I do not know whether you would enjoy Nietzsche or not, and can only repeat that enjoyment is neither the first nor the greatest stake in intellectual matters. But if you're interested in some equally interesting analysis that may or may not have the same problems in Gatto (I think it does to a certain extent, though the work is generally finer), consider a recent translation of Nietzsche's writing on education.
This latest edition is called Anti-Education and was edited by Paul Reitter and Chad Wellmon. New York Review of Books was the publisher.
Let me know if you give it a read and by all means post here if you wish to have a charitable conversation. I so appreciate your participation in the ongoing discussions!
